Why not just get the non-HID ones? IMO that black chrome inside the HIDs instead of the black plastic is NOT worth all that extra $$$... unless there's something else about the HID ones that I dont know about. I just bought the non-HIDs and added McColluchs.
| Turbobug | 01-15-2003 02:47 PM |
im guessing its more expensive because of the beam pattern. The housing is made for the quite different HID beam pattern, allowing it to throw more light on the road without blinding oncomming traffic
...i think.

spw ind would have them i have the no hid and they are fine but if you want hid they have them:)
| krazedant | 01-15-2003 05:48 PM |
I didnt know the beam was different on the HID ones... hmm... but I do agree with drift king, the non-HIDs are fine. Light output is fine. But its up to you if you want the HID ones.

Yeah, except remember that Japanese cars drive on the wrong side of the road, so if people get JAPANESE DOMESTIC MARKET lights they will SHINE MOST OF THEIR LIGHT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

Oh really???It would shine most of the light into oncoming traffic??? damn, so it wouldn't be worth getting?

you might kill someone. get non HID and upgrade yourself.
| Diversion | 01-16-2003 06:22 AM |
Pay $765 shipped for the Non-JDM projectors and pay another $300 for an HID kit for them and you got the closest thing for about $1000 less!

I have the JDM STi HID headlights. They're actually sitting in my living room right now because I don't have a harness yet.
Let me tell you, the lights are SOOOOOO much prettier than the regular JDM STi lights. To me, it is like night and day. I will try to post some pictures today when I get a chance.

They might be a lot prettier than the non-HID ones, but paying more than 1K extra?? Too rich for my blood.
| dookiebob | 01-16-2003 01:40 PM |
You guys have to look harder. I definitely did not pay more than $1K extra... not even close.
| Cend_wrx | 01-16-2003 01:44 PM |
Hey dookiebob, where did u get the lights, and for how much?
| krazedant | 01-16-2003 05:53 PM |
So where did you get them from? The cheapest I've seen for the JDM STi HID headlights was about $2K.

Sorry, the pictures really don't do justice to how beautiful these pieces of jewelry are. I got my lights through a guy going by Lat Beah. I got a great deal, but I did have to wait forever and a half to get these lights. I won't say exactly how much I paid, but I can assure you that it was not anywhere near $2000.
Keep your eyes open. People sell their stuff for cheap at times. I was patient, and waited for my set of HIDs, and I was fortunate. These lights are also used for a few K miles, but that was ok by me.

I have to agree with dookiebob. You can find deals on the JDM HID lights. You just have to be patient. Mine cost me $1100 including 3 day shipping from Japan. Are they worth it? Who knows, but they sure look great.

So what's so different about the HID and non-HID JDM STi projectors? They look the same to me judging from the pics.

it's hard to see, but the non-hid have a plain black plastic trim. the hid have a black chrome plastic trim. it's black but kind of chrome shiny. the closest thing i can think of is black pearls. black but with a kind of sheen. very nice. hey, we should just call them mikimoto headlights :).
disadvantage (in the minds of some), price is a little higher (new) and they are RHD only. personally, i think they are gorgeous. i'd buy a set, swap the plates (so that the hids were now LHD) and sell my non-hid sets as non-hid RHD with black plastic trim. best of all worlds.

So you could pull the non-HID JDM projectors apart if you were that hard up on glossy housings and paint it yourself.. =)

But they still wouldn't be STi HID. By the time you add up the cost of the non-HID lights plus and HID kit plus the time and effort to paint them (assuming you don't screw it all up), you are at about the same cost as buying a used set of STi HIDs.

BTW folks the "black chrome" housings are limited to the JDM '01 model year. For '02+ they switched to flat black just like the standard projectors. The black chrome housing ones are pretty rare. FWIW I got my OEM HIDs ('02) with ballasts/brackets, wiring, and harness pigtails for ~$900 shipped. And that was a year ago. So the deals are out there. You just have to look.

With JDM '01 STi HID headlights you don't get:
LHD beam pattern
Hight adjustment ability
Personally, EDM's (LHD with adjustable motors), an HID kit, a chrome coating on the faceplate (if you need that chrome housing that much), and the adjustment switch is the way to go.

I don't know what headlights you're holding, because the '01 HIDs that are in my apartment have little motors and gears for height adjustment.

I thought all HID trilamps were Japanese and that all Japanese lamps didn't have the adjustment switch like the ones in the UK.

Mine have the motors and the plug for it also on the back. :)

Mine has the six wire connection and motor as well.
Jim, do you have a wiring diagram showing how you hooked your's up?

I have the rotary switch but have been too lazy to make the harness to go to the headlights. These are the threads I have been following on this....

Oops, sorry about that Jim. I was asking how you wired the lights and the ballasts.
