Hella Supertones - how loud are they?
I hope they're hella loud, cause I want to make sure the idiot in front of me knows just how much of an idiot he is. I also want to make sure that they won't be able to use a cell phone either.

no, they are not airhorns. they look similar to those that are stock, they are just much "beefier".

Susquehanna is where I got my horns. 65.50 + shipping there but if you and a couple buddies buy a couple more they give group discounts if you ask. I've also heard of people that bought it cheaper at local auto stores..

I'd like to know too but how do you describe how loud something is? I'm not sure if the descriptions of loud, very loud and extremely loud are that helpful.
Maybe they can compare it to some standard reference sound like a truck horn or let's say twice as loud as stock, etc.

the volume in dB would be nice, but a reference to the stock horn would work too.
sheesh.. didn't know this would be so hard.
I'm emailing Susquehanna, maybe they know the volume in dB

You guys know how loud a decible is? I have been told they are roughly double stock loudness with a better tone.

I know how loud 115 dB is. Thats how loud my friends sound system in his truck was measured at. hahaha... the bass was so intense it was making my eyeballs vibrate. I couldn't see so well 'cause everything was jumping around.
| kenchan | 07-18-2002 09:54 PM |
the stock system is pretty loud. it has 3 horns, usually most j-cars only have 2. id get the airhorns. :D
| Skyline | 07-18-2002 10:05 PM |
I believe they are 118 db. I'd like to get them myself...but I'm not sure if I'd pass New York State Inspection with those. I wonder...
| LehighWRX | 07-18-2002 10:14 PM |
Are these plug and play?
| Skyline | 07-18-2002 10:38 PM |
Not quite. You can't really use the stock wiring as it's not sufficient to carry enough current. You need to run a new power wire. It doesn't seem difficult though. The instructions have been posted numerous times.
| gtguy | 07-19-2002 12:05 AM |
They're 117dB, and when you get on them, stuff moves, unless the poor sod you just honked at had a heart attack. Note that they're directional, so sitting in your car, you'll think they aren't that loud, and you got ripped off.

According to the paper work that comes in the box no. But do the math, according to the spec sheet they draw a max 72W, therefore at 13V they will draw a max ~6A. Your Horn/Hazards fuse is rated at 15A. I did a straight plug in on mine and haven't had any issues (and I use the horn alot). You will have to make short shunt wires to bridge one terminal on the horn to ground. The stock horns use their housings as the ground connection.
BTW, they are 118db, as are all hella air horns as well (both 2 and 3 horn). The old supertones are 300Hz and 500Hz, the new ones are 300Hz and 350Hz. I've been told that the new ones are not as powerful, I think they're down to 110db.
Here's a scan from theie 2002 VLEPA catalogue,

Anyone know how those Horns sound?
| Chunky_Chicken | 07-19-2002 12:47 PM |
SWEET JEBUS that pic turned out huge!
The horns don't sound like truck horns, they still sound like car horns. Sort of the same noise, a little lower in tone, and MUCH louder.
I have mine mounted right behind my grill, so you can see them from the outside quite easily. Alot of people ask me what they are, I tell them they're my turbos or something stupid and when they go to have closer look, I punish them for their automotive ignorance!

Those horns are loud, I have heard them in person. They project very far in a straight line, whereas the hella dual air horns (the ones I have in my WRX) project out in all directions and are just loud in general :D

I have these puppies on the RS, because we do a lot of SF/Oakland city driving amongst the throngs of idiotic CA drivers and pedestrians. Let me tell you, these things are LOUD. Shrill, harsh, abrasive, and ultimately functional! The best description I ever heard of them (on this board, IIRC) was: "Hella Supertones are like a sonic nerve whip!"
I did nothing fancy with them, such as wiring in additional power. Just hooked them up to the exisiting horn leads and let'm rip! :)

Yes, I don't know why people say they need to hook up the relay. Our car already has a relay for the horn, and it is rated high enough for the horns' max power.

Agreed
I've got no issues with the OE power wires. They work just fine. Like was stated earlier, you'll need to make two short ground wire setups, and extend the lead from the farthest drivers side OE horn to power Hella # 2 at it's new location. Like this....

As for sound pressure, they're quite a bit louder, but very unidirectional. From the drivers seat, you'd think you got jacked! But stand in front of the car, and let someone blaze the airbag cover.

I Love these things. They are loud. My buddy was like $65 on horns, so you can go beep really loud, big deal. When he was walking back to the car from the mac machine, I layed into them and he jumped back so far. It was halarious. They were totaly worth the money, and even truckers move out of the way now:devil:

you can also get them at www.griotsgarage.com and the increase in price you see ($5 maybe) over the other places is worth it IMHO, they have customer service coming out their ears. My last order from them came FAST and all the parts looked like they had posh life on whatever shelf. Good place.
