How do you guys take stickers off a windshield? part 1

How do you guys take stickers off a windshield?
What do you guys do to take stickers of windshields? Do you just use razorblade to peel it off? Would that scratch the surfacr of the glass at all? Would using ahedsive (sp?) remover work well? What is your method? Thanks

Razor blade shouldn't scratch the glass surface as long as you don't orient the blade anywhere near perpendicular to the glass surface. Even if you did, you'd need to exert a good amount of force on the surface to nick it. As far as removing a sticker, I don't think you need to be too concerned. If you were doing a DIY tint job, that would be a different matter.

My suggestion is to use the razor blade to pick up one side and press that side of the sticker to the blade (now between the glass and part of the sticker) and pull the sticker using the razor blade as a pull tab. Any remaining adhesive could probably be wiped off, perhaps with a little bit of window cleaner, wd-40, or goo-gone.

peel it off and use a flat head screwdriver and maybe some windex to get the remaining gunk off... you'd be surprised but this works.

You can use a hair dryer to soften up the adhesive and sticker. You may then be able to just lift one corner with the razor bleade and work the sticker off - heating the sticker as you go.

Keith's method may be the way to go if you want to save the sticker.
If I want to remove one and I don't care about saving it, I'll spray on and around it with glass cleaner and gradually work it off the window with a razor scraper. A scraper with a handle is much better than just a razor blade, because it allows you to apply more force in the proper direction, and it's safer as well.
Once the main body of the sticker is off apply more glass cleaner and gently go over the area with the scraper again until all the residue is gone, then do a final wipe with more glass cleaner and a rag.

Goo Gone works great too
RSEnigma 10-31-2003 02:20 PM

goog gone is a godsent! oh yeah razors r good too! :D

the easiest way is with a razor. you dont need a hair dryer or goo gone. spray area with windex or whatever, just so its wet, and scrape away keeping the blade at an angle. you need to use something wet cuz it will act like a lube and keep you from scratching the glass up. do it this way and there shouldnt be any cleanup except wiping the excess windex off the window
4wheelflyer 10-31-2003 05:25 PM

use a razor blade to get the sticker started (peel up a corner) pull the rest off whith your hands and then wipe clean with goo be gone or glass cleaner. scooby windows scratch easy so be carefull

Another vote for Goo Gone

If you're really paranoid...i helped my friend take off tint that was high performance outside vinyl...and let me tell you that crap was insane...i was able to peel off the corners and every inch had gunk...then i used this Tint-Off stuff from Schucks Auto Supply, sprayed that on, almost went through a whole bottle just for 5" down and all the way across...it was a 99 RS...anyway after I sprayed the Tint-Off on I just had to rub the HELL out of it with a throw-away towel.

Screwdriver?!

You will be fine with a razor blade.

goo gone is absolutely wonderful for stickery removal!

not only have i used this on the interior of my windshield to take off stickery crap, but it's what i used to take off the annoying "Gary Lang Subaru" logo on the back of my car when it was new.

Just don't use it on the exterior if you don't feel like rewaxing the area :)

edit: oh yeah.. um as mentioned above the best way to SAVE the sticker would be w/ your little sister's handy dandy hair dryer!!

as far as goo gone goes....the name kinda represents how it works.... the sticker will probably be crapped once it gets attacked by the raging army of citrus :p

coo, thanks for the replies!

2.5 years later....

PNSS is trying to get his gay pride sticker residue off his new-old-car.

Any updated thoughts on how to do this, or has technology brought no improvements? I'd rather not play with razor blades, I bleed easily :)

I don't know about glass but I can tell you that I've had excellent success using gasoline to remove old stickers from the body of other cars. However you must immediately wash any part of the car where gasoline made contact or else it will eat your finish.

Razor blades is coo! Gots ta have a box of 'em at all times. A little tip learned from hanging out with the BMW crowd: put a piece of 400 grit wet-or-dry on a flat surface. Take the razor blade and drag it backwards across the sandpaper at a low angle. Do this a few times to get rid of any burrs that may be on that side. Then use with impunity on your glass (on that side of the blade only, natch).

Also a good thing to do across your entire windshield before replacing wiper blades. You'd be surprised at how much crud gets embedded in your glass.

Bumping old threads to increase your post count will not work either.

+1 for razor blade.

Used one myself, and it works freaking awesome.
couchflambeau 02-05-2006 06:15 PM

Blowtorch and pliers..... finish with an air chisel for the adhesive.

Personally I'd do a razor blade and wet the sticker down with goo-gone.... but I'm paranoid... :p
this is too funny...
Hey if anyone is guilty of bumping an old thread it is me.

I really needed help tho - and did a search... it applied... hence the bumpage.

Thanks for the new tips... I will try to figure something out this w/e. I am sick of the smell in the car from these sticker residues. This moron put stickers inside her back window, and when the defroster was on heated it up and melted them onto the glass. Not only is it ugly to look at, it's probably carcinogenic!
