Help me upgrade my STX WRX!

Ok, only reason I'm bumped into STX is because of my springs.
And basically, I got raped! :(
I have to start getting some upgrades to become more competetive in this class. What should I try to do first? Uppipe, downpipe? Strut/sway bars? Other stuff?
My other option is to take out the springs and compete in D-Stock...but I dont know about that...what do you guys think about this option?
What do you guys reccomend

how much seat time do you have? unless a nationally competitive person happens to be in your region in STX, it'll be very possible to drive the car as is to victory.
that doesn't stop thousands of enthusiasts from pouring money into their cars, though. :)
do you like the springs and how much do you care about autocross? how much would you enjoy the car on the street with those other upgrades? could you handle the noise of a big downpipe (and catback exhaust that you'd likely also do)?
swaybars are pretty cheap though and I can't see a downside there.

Azenis....rear sway bar
| baileypicks24 | 08-26-2004 01:05 AM |
Ah I knew the first question would be "how much seat time" lol
As far as being competetive, I dont think its possible as I am 4 seconds behind the #1 (and only) WRX in STX class. He is the president of the regional autoX so hes been doing this forever. There were a couple of WRXs in D-Stock, and my tiems are very similar to theirs (if not better! :D)
Lets see..one or two seasons of autoXing? That was with my Integra however, I've only done ONE autoX event with my WRX.
I mean would that give me more reason to get the springs off and run D-Stock while I'm learning? Or should I just stay in STX and just race to learn and have fun, and upgrade parts slowly?
Azenis and sway bar..thats exactly what I was thinking about.

Power enhancers....Exhaust, uppipe/header combo, Azenis, rear ADJ bar, Rear strut bar
that should get you started...

IMHO, suspension should be sorted before adding power... tires, swaybar, maybe a better suspension than what you have like STI takeoffs or something of the sort with camber plates...
Power can be added later and will help you go faster once you can keep the tires in their optimum grip range. If you're overdriving the car with stock suspension, you're going to be even worse off with more power on top of a stock suspension if you can't keep speed into and out of corners.

I agree with KC....

If you like your springs get some adjustable struts so you can stiffen things up as needed. If you plan on upgrading the rear sway bar, you should also consider upgrading the front sway bar to the 22mm.

I'd say go to DS, even on Azenis. The surfaces your club gets to use aren't all that great (with the exception of the coliseum) and you won't get as much improvement as you'd expect going to Kumho or Hoosier. Add a big front sway bar and when your shocks start feeling like a limit change them to SA Konis. Look at times from the last NCAC that your club hosted. Lots of stock cars were beating STX, including DS. (Blowing my own horn here. Sorry.)
Oh, go to www.autocross.com and find an evolution school relatively close by. That was the best $200 I _ever_ spent on autocross.
Unless things have changed in the last few months Lackey really doesn't have very many mods on his car, just springs, Konis, swaybars, and a cat-back.

there is no point in downgrading your car for a class, or spending a lot of money to prep to the limits of your current class, when your driving skills are by far the limiting factor.
the only exceptions would be if money isn't a concern and you enjoy the car more on the street.
you are getting replies here from nationally competitive drivers who LIVE for autocross so make sure you consider how their advice applies to YOU. they are telling you what they'd do as nationally competitive drivers. my replies are not of that sort. I have done a few seasons of autocross and today go out a few times a season for kicks. I spend my time at the track... and on 2 wheels. :) but who cares about me. :p
so in short, sure do the swaybars (both front and rear, not just rear) and tires. you'll have more fun on the street, not spend too much, and be fine to keep progressing as a driver.

Wow, some really great advice. I appreciate it so much!
I think what I will do is just stay in STX and get some more seat time and not worry about my times. Then eventually upgrade with tires, sway bars, etc...
Thanks again

Thanks for the link. I will definitely get signed up for the next school.
And no, Mr Lackey does NOT have many mods at all which is amazing.
Yes, a lot of DS cars were beating STX. But what I think I will do like I just posted I will stick with STX and just get a few more events under my belt and not worry about the times. Then in teh offseason I will upgrade suspension, etc..
Thanks again. I try to head out to some of the events in the Eastern part of NC, Ill send you a PM when I do.
Thanks everybody

Yeah, definitely come out to some of our events. Several WRXes in DS & STX, with varying levels of driver ability (including trhoppe & Shawn Whipple, 2 national-level drivers). Our next event is at Sanford airport on September 18th. There will be lots of people there who can ride along with you & tell you what to do to YOU to be faster. :) (& show you their car setups in case you still want to spend money)

Stay in STX, you can slowly add parts as you get money, time, and experience.
I started in STX with just wheels/tires, rear sway bar, and uppipe. I slowly have added suspension, springs first, then struts, then downpipe, then header, etc. I've moved up in driver skill more than any of these have helped out, but I wouldn't be where I'm at unless I had them either. I usually (when I like the way my car is handling) finish top 10 or 20 overall on PAX in Milwaukee and at hte top of STX.
I'm going to be going to coilovers for next year - the money spending continues.

Whoa hey, how do I get in on this STX-in-a-box action?
As for STX vs. DS, I made the switch to STX, even though my car is woe-fully underprepped for it, because I wasn't getting enough negative camber out my stock WRX Wagon (-.5, beating on it, pulling on it, taking it to Gran Turismo East...). So while I completely agree with KC, I would reinforce that camber plates or bolts are a beautiful thing. You can take the money you save on tires and put it towards other mods.

Good job! I lost 50lbs last year, which I can say definitely didn't hurt in an H-stock car. :)
