Grrr... got a little chip in my windshield today
Yeah, so a dirty semi threw a rock at me. It's just a little chip. Little chips don't develop into gigantic cracks do they?

It will. There is no doubt. Get it filled at a windshield shop

Or go to your autoparts store and fill it yourself...

Definitely get it taken care of ASAP. If you take it to a car wash they usually look for that sort of stuff. They will offer to fix it, then ask if you have insurance (so they can overcharge them). Tell them you don't want to get insurance involved and just pay cash. Around here, you can get it done for 20-30 bucks...but rock chips and car washes are a dime-a-dozen in phoenix.
veightkiller 01-23-2007 12:26 AM

it's normal to get a chip on the windshield. get it check right away and see if it's rapairable or not. i have one on my car right now and got it fixed for $60 CAD.

+ a lot. Chips happen, it is winter you know.
Wannascooby 01-23-2007 01:24 AM

If you are cheap put some superglue on it
If you aren't cheap get it repaired
If you are a baller then replace the windshield

Oh yeah the small chips can sometimes become bigger cracks. I think the weather is the cause of this(not sure though).
wrxwhat 01-23-2007 01:26 AM

Call your insurance company, you may be entitled to a free windshield.
mdbuehler 01-23-2007 01:29 AM

Truck kicked up several rocks into my windshield when I just got the car. Several chips in about 5 seconds. 10 seconds or so after that, a foot long crack :( Got that "repaired". Another crack showed up last week, about a foot long again from a small rock chip I didn't notice under the wiper. Sigh... Fix them or they WILL crack!
Kangpreza 01-23-2007 01:31 AM

DIY kits done work well, it has be to good weather, sunny, temp.

it should only cost about $30ish to fix small nick or chip
eSToI Loco 01-23-2007 01:39 AM

Repair AHORA ! NOW ! MAINTENANT! I learned the hard way, dealer quoted $840 for a OEM glass and molding, it was a chip until I tapped the glass and VOILA it propagated in a nano second.
D fresh 01-23-2007 01:43 AM

^^Most insurance companies will cover at least one windshield per year. IIRC mine has a special deductable for windshield replacements, something very low like $100 or something like that.^^
i_c_the_light 01-23-2007 03:00 AM

Glass cracks travel at 5x the speed of sound.

Random info, but cool.

The amount of damage depends on the size of the chip and other various factors. I've got 3 chips that haven't gotten bigger in 2 years, however a workmate had one that became a crack that went 1/2 way down the glass within a short space of time. Play it safe and get it fixed.
02redwagone 01-23-2007 04:42 AM

You can guide your cracks by tapping just infront of them. I have some semi semetrical designs incorperated into my windshield.
rkramer 01-23-2007 11:42 AM

you can get aftermarket glass installed for a little over $200 out the door, and it is BETTER quality then subaru OEM stuff.

haha if you hear something get that ish fixed no matter what
brian123 01-23-2007 12:24 PM

yea, i got a large chip on the passenger side, the next day i was going to go get it filled, by that time it had spread all the way across the other side and splitting off every direction

So the guy just threw a big rock at you? You should have pulled up next to him and threw your car on him:lol:

Yeah, there was too much traffic to do that. That's why I was stuck behind the truck to begin with.

Anyways, now that it's been a few days, it looks like the rock just left more of a dirt mark on the windshield than a chip.
Dragonbreak 01-26-2007 02:35 AM

How about those little "rock chip repair" that are outside the local malls just sitting there? Any experience there?
unsakred 01-26-2007 12:42 PM

a miata just got mine a few days ago :( i had to replace my windshield
Brepic06 01-26-2007 01:55 PM

i work at an advance auto parts.....they have a kit for exactly that....omes with a suction cup and the glue....only like 8 or 9 bucks.....well worth doing yourself
SinisterSkube 01-26-2007 01:57 PM

had it happen last year.... sucks
RBelcher00 01-26-2007 02:46 PM

I have two huge gashes. Have had them for about a year now. Never cracked.
My entire windshield is pockmarked with rock marks. It looks like it's permanently dirty even after washing. The entire thing looks sparkly or dusty.

I hate Southern California freeways. And big trucks.

Most cars get that way after a few years. My last car looked like someone sand blasted the windshield! A chip isn't a big deal unless it's very deep (and then, if you look closely, you will often see a small crack there) - anything that looks like a crack needs to be fixed asap (once you get dirt in there, it's harder to fix) - generally, if it's less than the size of a quarter, it's fixable.
nashcarr 01-26-2007 05:06 PM

My WRX was the ripe old age of 3 weeks old when the windshield had to be replaced due to a rock flying off a truck!
BLK REX 01-26-2007 08:12 PM

I had a block of wood fly off a truck..bent my hood, and gouged my headlight..
desert pirate 01-28-2007 05:38 PM

save lots of cash and get the repair kit from auto zone or wal-mart 9-10 bucks, I have fixed at least a dozen this way and they actually come out better than the local pros. just make sure the shield is not hot!
