Solberg might miss Friday's Rallye de France

Petter Solberg is running out of options to take the start of Friday's Rallye de France.

The Norwegian crashed his Subaru Impreza during shakedown this morning, taking a down telegraph pole as he left the road on the 6.94km Capo de Feno stage, bringing the test session to an end.

Subaru says the car is too badly damaged to try and make repairs before the start of the rally and Solberg now faces three rather unattractive options:

He could miss the rally completely but this is an unlikely option given that he is lying fourth in the championship, nine points behind Richard Burns with three rallies in the series remaining.

Subaru could try an airfreight an Impreza over from its Oxfordshire base back in the UK. Team mate Tommi Makinen's Catalunya car is already prepared and ready to go, but time would be tight getting the car to Corsica.

Or Subaru could ask Makinen to hand over his car to Solberg, thereby forcing the four-time world champ to miss rally.

Petter Solberg has crashed his Subaru Impreza during shakedown for the Rallye de France.

Solberg's car left the road during the 6.94km test stage and hit a telegraph pole. While Solberg and co-driver Phil Mills were unhurt, the crew reported panel damage to the driver's side of the Impreza.

The full extent of the damage won't be known until the car is taken back to the main service park in Ajaccio.

Solberg faces an anxious wait while the Subaru team evaluate whether it can fix the car before the Norwegian is scheduled to take the ceremonial start ramp this evening. However a Subaru spokesman said: "If the car can be fixed, we are confident we will fix it."

In 2002 Markko Martin failed to make the start of the Swedish Rally after stuffing his Ford Focus into a snowbank during shakedown.

Solberg's Impreza without the active suspension that got its first airing in Sanremo had set the fifth fastest time before his off, but the men on a charge were Ford duo Markko Martin and Francois Duval. Martin had set a time of 4m17.0s on the 6.94km Capo de Feno stage while Duval was just two tenths of a second slower.

My money is on Tommi handing over his car. He seems like that type of guy. :D
X1_SRT 10-16-2003 10:29 AM

god this sucks!!!! i mean, yeah petter has a shot at the championship, and T. Mak should let him drive. but its his last year, you'd think he want to drive his last three races!!! what an awful turn of events!!! can you imagine the amount of scambling going on in the suby camp right now!!

Solberg hits major trouble in shakedown
Shakedown accident damage leaves Subaru in Corsican dilemma
Solberg faces a tense afternoon

Petter Solberg could be forced out of the Tour de Corse before the event has even started. The Norwegian had an accident in today's (Thursday's) non-competitive shakedown, with enough damage to his Subaru to prevent him taking the ceremonial start this evening.

Solberg, placed fourth in the world championship, struck a telegraph pole on the Capo de Feno stage. His best hope of starting the rally now is either an emergency spare car being flown in from England (difficult at this late stage) or team-mate Tommi Makinen handing his car over to Solberg.

A failure to start the rally would almost certainly kill off Solberg's championship challenge. He'll have to await a decision from the team on what is to be done.

Ford's Markko Martin was fastest on the shakedown. The Estonian has shown good asphalt pace this year and is arguably owed some luck this weekend.

Peugeot's Marcus Gronholm was the fastest non-Ford, over a second quicker than team-mate Gilles Panizzi. Colin McRae was the quickest of the Citroen drivers, but McRae's co-driver Derek Ringer says the stage was not representative of the stages they will face this weekend.

"It was more open, faster and wider, so it is tricky to draw any meaningful conclusions," said Ringer. "Although the car must be good because Colin has not made any changes."

The weather will have a role to play, as it did in Sanremo. Rain is predicted for both Friday, although the skies are expected to clear by Sunday at the latest.
Dammit! This pretty much scuttles any champoinship hopes...maybe even for the top three.

Ahhh, screw the panels! Put a new wheel and front bumper on it, get it aligned and lets go rallying! Go Petter!

Well they're gonna try!!

if it was me. I would go ahead and air ship the other car over. Mean while, have Petter take Tommi's car and when and if the other cars makes it in time for the start. Give that one too Tommi.
How hard is that???
X1_SRT 10-16-2003 01:45 PM

well isn't that nice...

"After his team mate Petter Solberg hit trouble on this mornings shakedown stage, Tommi spontaneously offered Petter the use of his car. But his generous offer turns out not to be needed, as Petter will start the rally with his own original car which will be hastily repaired overnight." -wrc.com

More pics of the car after the crash

Check out the rear driver side wheel, if you get a chance. I've always wondered if that could easily happen to an STi with how close the brakes are to the wheel...

Reading that gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. I hope I'm not gay!

PS - Thank God Petter is all right.

It'll buff out.
HomerJay 10-17-2003 12:28 AM

Keeping my fingers crossed! :(
AndyRoo 10-17-2003 02:25 AM

There's hardly any damage. It will still...roll...maybe.

I knew Tommi would offer his car. He's that cool. If Petter ends up borrowing his car, maybe Tommi will come back for another race next season? Maybe, who knows, I think Petter is cool enough to offer.

UPDATE: Petter started the Rally of France.

http://www.worldrallynews.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1066375311,1511,

Quote a team spokesman "Its fine mechanically. A lot of the later work was cosmetic and if the photographs are taken from the right hand side it looks OK."

I wonder what the left hand side of the car look like, if the right only look "OK"

Well, hopefully this repair work will count for something. Here's to hoping for a good finish.

hey check out the in car video of petter and phil. you can't see them hit the pole, you can hear the reaction of it approaching!!

Petter Solberg's Impreza started the rally looking a bit like the Peugeot 206 fashioned by an Indian sculptor from a Hindustan Ambassador in their famous TV ad.

The mechanics worked through the night until 6am to get the car ready, using a workshop that looked like it was the former property of Arthur Daley. Petter's car isn't going to win any beauty contests, but most crucially it's now pointing straight and 100% mechanically fit.

The resemblance to a blue banana is happily over. "The car feels good," said Petter. "I've got no mechanical worries at all. I just want to say a very big thank you to all the guys who worked so hard to get me here."

There's no real surprise at seeing Citroen near the top the leaderboard, but it's not been without drama. Sebastien Loeb didn't compete in Corsica last year but it's not holding him back. He enjoyed a strong start to the rally, despite complaining of a slight brake problem on the opening stage.

His team mate Carlos Sainz hit problems after winning SS1. Co-driver Marc Marti managed to leave their time cards behind at the stop control. This could have been a fatal error, but some nifty driving ensured that they were able to drive back, retrieve the all-important time cards, and still start the next stage on time.

No surprises either to see Markko Martin doing the business, but the Estonian is not happy with his driving. "The car's good, but I'm not!" he joked. "I don't know what it is, but these stages didn't really work out for me."

God help everyone else when he finds some stages that go well for him...

Marcus Gronholm was happy with his Peugeot, as was Richard Burns who seems to have found 'the feeling' that eluded him in Sanremo. "It's another world entirely, but I still think the Citroens and the Ford are too quick for us," he said.

His Peugeot team mate Gilles Panizzi was in trouble though: as in Sanremo, Gilles is struggling to find a good set-up. "It's like I've got a completely different car to what I had in the shakedown," he said. "I don't understand it: I'm sure something is broken."

Didier Auriol suffered a nightmare start to the rally when he spotted a fluid leak before the start of the first stage. He immediately called his engineers for advice, but the problem turned out to be a mysterious electrical gremlin, and Didier was not even able to start the first stage. Other mechanical dramas included a stuck throttle pedal for Philippe Bugalski. Sadly, this didn't make him any quicker.

If you want a local hero though, look no further than Alex Bengue. He's only 26, it's his first world championship rally, and he's already set two top-10 times to lie 10th overall.

The next loop of three stages is a repeat of the three we have already run this morning. The much-predicted rain seems to be holding off, although most people now think it's going to rain quite hard tomorrow instead, which could give the rally a whole new complexion. Tyre wear looks set to be a key factor over the next loop of three stages; Colin McRae in particular saying that his Michelins seem to be wearing heavily.

We wait and watch....

Talk about first class mechanics. Damn these guys are good at what they do.

"Accident? What accident...?"

HomerJay 10-17-2003 08:07 PM

Beauty of prodrive mechanics! ;)
Chromer 10-17-2003 10:51 PM

Wow. I'm looking at the high-res, and it's hard to believe it's the same car. A slice on the rear door and a little crumpling of the rear quarter-panel. And the C pillar looks a bit (okay, a LOT) wavy. Really good job though.

It really DID buff right out.
DrBiggly 10-17-2003 11:11 PM

Props for the techs that work on it. Hopefully it will hold together without mechanical difficulty. :)
Kilika2k 10-18-2003 06:45 PM

Hmm...me thinks Nicky Grist is gonna pick the Subaru mechanics for the Immarsat Star of the Rally award if Petter wins or earns some points. They deserved it! And the rally hasn't officially begun either!
