$$ to paint entire car? part 1

$$ to paint entire car?
What is the average price to get a full body paint job for a WRX sedan? I know it must depend on the shop, but let's say I went to a small body shop (nothing commercial like Maaco), how much would it cost to get the entire car painted? I understand certain paint colors may cost more than others, so let's make it simple, how much would it cost to paint my WRB car black? Or grey?
wrxfactor 04-08-2006 10:22 PM

Um, it depends, are you looking for an exterior job, or do you want everything taken apart (doors, motor pulled, etc.)? You're looking at a few thousand easy, I say.
wReXeRw 04-08-2006 10:26 PM

door jams + exterior... you're looking easily at $1,500 +

Exterior + engine bay + interior + jams = $2,000+

that's it?
I thought it would cost more than that

In MA, I'd say about $3,500-$4,000 is the cheapest you'll find at a place you can trust.
wReXeRw 04-08-2006 10:36 PM

MOB Works, a shop responsible for many of the front cover cars on the magazines; charge around 2,500 for full complete paint job, for standard, non kandy colors.

3.5k - 4.5k is a crap load for a standard paint job.

So is WRB considered a standard color?
EtoS 04-08-2006 10:51 PM

Not really, it's a color they can order from subaru fine. Candy colors would be very special colors you find on some top end cars and those wierd ass multi color stuff that change from either temps, light, view etc etc. It can get pretty darn fancy.

scrwrx 04-09-2006 12:20 PM

I asked my uncle this just because I was curious too and he said for the whole car it's about $3000 and he works at a Cadillac dealer. I don't know what it consist of but that's the price he gave me.
Slamsitin 04-09-2006 12:36 PM

wReXeRw 04-09-2006 01:05 PM

I know a couple of shops around me charge more for black, its harder to do or something like that, and make sure you don't go to some cheap shop like fact-o-bake or macco, my friend did and the job was soo crappy, swirl marks, grinder marks, the red bleeding though from the old paint in a few small spots

on my 240 I was quoted at right shy of 3600 for the works [bay, jams, removed handles etc. etc.]

Listen to this guy, he has given you the best info yet.

I work at a custom body shop and IIRC full re-sprays start at around $3k This would include removal of all trim, bumpers, door handles, etc. Car is completely wetsanded, buffed. Tape lines are very carefully hidden as the door jambs wouldent be painted. your talking about 4k+ for jams painted as well (A lot more dissasembly, doors come off, trunk, etc). Color change (since it is even more of a pain, around 6k+. This doesnt even include any body work. The entire goal of a full respray including jambs, is to have zero tape lines, this is the difference between quality, and maaco.

I have seen numerous "show car" paint jobs that people have gotten for cheap. Frequently these look great in pictures.. or at about 10ft from the car. Unlesss you are getting one heck of a deal, that cheap price meant corners were cut somewhere.

I think if everyone understood how many hours/days or even weeks it takes to do a quality job, the reason why it costs so much would be undersood. Heck the shop can easily spend 2 days just wetsanding/buffing.
wReXeRw 04-09-2006 01:46 PM

wow... maybe you guys should just come out to so cal and get your car painted...
living4surf 04-09-2006 02:00 PM

i just droped 3195 on painting my sedan and shaving anttena and sidemarkers.

STIgeorge 04-09-2006 02:55 PM

I was just quoted $2000 to repaint my STi Aspen White. It would be $2700 to change the color of it. This includes repainting EVERYTHING the new color (door jams, engine bay, etc.).
Ayrton 04-09-2006 08:20 PM

You guys do understand that a total repaint will kill the value of the car?
wrxin' 04-09-2006 10:00 PM

depends on where you go..........quoted 5500 for mine but that was to be painted silver flake basecoat and candy tangerine topcoat. it was the same guy that did my custom paint on my truck but i decided not to go with it.

I have a friend that has his own paintbooth at his house and does alot of sidework. he will paint any color i want and just charge me material as long as i help with the prep work and do his electrical work on his T-bucket.

one of these days ill take him up on it ;).
MomoWRX 04-09-2006 10:55 PM

To be totally honest with you, it does really depend on the shop. For a full all out, take everything off paint job at a decent place don't spend more than $3k to $3500 (this being a normal paint color).....add $750 to $1K for custom paint
