JewPac42 08-01-2003 12:50 AM

Not rice, but I wouldnt do it.

Every time I go back to HK, I love how those orange plates look on cars. Way better than what we have. For those who don't know what they look like, they look exactly like UK plates (UK controlled HK until 97).

However I do think it's in a way it's "rice". We're not in the UK, or Japan. It serves no purpose for someone to put on foriegn plates (unless they take thier car overseas which is less likely), so it's basically show. I see show cars doing the same thing (adds more rice).

Ill let the VW boys keep there little euro license plate thing.
PPower 08-01-2003 07:35 AM

I think "rice" is partially trying to be something you aren't. That doesn't fully encompass the word, but it's part of it. That covers Honda stickers on a Hyundai to foreign license plates. There is no improvement to looks because most people would want to get rid of the plates all together if it were a style/appearance issue. rice=poser

Unless the JDM or EDM plates have nice number or cool reference to the subie; otherwise I really think that the plate serve no purpose. I prefer the plateless clean look to my front (although it aren't legal around here.) and I don't like two different kinds of plate mounted on, front and back. Just my opinion.
reynolca 08-01-2003 08:35 AM

If your car is purchased in another country, licensed in another country, and then imported I think it is OK to keep the original plate on the front.

Otherwise it is rice.

JPS

just plain stupid
scoobySTi 08-01-2003 05:07 PM

not rice
I really don't see why all you people seem to think that different styles of plates would be "rice". Supposing they were legal, they would simply be another type of visual modification, such as spoilers, body kits, paint jobs, decals, etc. Also, seeing as how they are FAR less imposing (IMO) than the gigantic, oddly shaped US license plates, I would almost actually consider them the opposite idea of the excessivities of "rice". I happen to think that they look much better than US plates (even though you might not) and are less domineering over the shape of the vehicle that the designers intended.

But, as always, this is IMHO, so no flaming, please.

scoobySTi I agree with you.

rice = automotive fashion. Since no non-US plate is legal to run in the US, any non-US plate is on the car for looks, not function. Whether that equates to rice is up to you to decide. But there are no practical reasons to run non-US plates.

And no one has cars they run here and abroad, aside from Mexico and Canadia, so the "purchased, licensed, imported" argument doesn't fly either.
MAD REX 08-01-2003 06:01 PM

rice!
dookiebob 08-01-2003 06:08 PM

You can put these types of plates on states that do not require front license plates, like Pennsylvania :D

That said, this is

RICE!

So do people in Japan put American plates on the front of their cars?? I could just see some Japanese guy with a Buick and a California plate on the front

Euro look with regular plate
Try putting your regular plate BELOW the mounting points with the top 1-3/4" bent so you can screw it into the underside if the grey plastic bar below the mounting points.
It makes the plate look more european shaped.

;)

btw, I think that bent license plate thing is a good idea. Is it legal though?
Smelli Bugatti 08-03-2003 10:16 AM

I think they are kinda neat and some of the cars look much better with the euro plate. I would like to have one but here in NY we need all kinds of stickers, taxes, and plates and cant do anything different or innovative without police harassment.
