DIY Road Noise Reduction

Does anyone have any methods of doing this that actually work? The noise in my 96 on the highway can get annoying sometimes.

Have you tried quieter tires to start?
| Uncle Scotty | 02-05-2007 07:55 AM |
...most of the noise ya hear on the road is the tires....and/or the fartpipe exhaust that so many here seem to think sounds good

If you search in the Car Audio forum on "sound deadening" you will find a a lot of info about RAAMmat and Ensolite. They are products provided by a VERY highly respected and helpful member on these boards that will help significantly reduce the road noise you hear. Check it out.

I have an actual exhaust system thank you. :D
Im referring mainly to wind noise, that seems like it gets into the seals and causes a shhiwsh sound in the cabin.

Subaru's frameless windows are one of the causes of the wind noise you describe, Another cause are the seals themselves, in your case, if they have not been replaced, they are 10 years old, you can clean them first and them swipe them with silicone spray to soften them, that should help some.
I read on your other thread, that you have roof racks, that in itself is a big contributor to wind noise. If at all possible remove them when not in use.

Dont forget the side mirrors! The seams around the pivot points of folding
mirrors catch air and cause alot of noise.

It actually flew off this weekend so I'm way ahead of you on that one. :)
Thanks for the info on the seals though...that should definitly help some.

Tires will cause the most road noise. But if you've got nice performance tires, it's a price you have to pay. Sound deadening material will help (dynamat, raammat, whatever).
And even though you said it flew off, still good to note, roof racks make horrible noise. Especially if you have round bars. A cylinder is just about the worst aerodynamic shape, you'd be no worse having large square bars. Airfoil shaped cross bars (like on the wagons) or a fairing will help this greatly.
Other than that... the impreza is inherintly a very noisey car, so you just have to deal with it unfortunately. :(

dynamat. I recently did a 99 civic... total - about 80 sq feet of dynamat which still wasnt enough..
end result - dramatic reduction in road noise.. I even did some of the roof...
I would do it to my car but, as many know, that s**t is heavy

Just turn the radio up another notch. Unless you remove the wipers and mirrors you will have wind noise.

I bought some E dead on ebay. Did both doors airtight. I could tell the difference. I used a lot on the doors and still have about 75% of the kit left. It sticks well and isn't stiff like some of the crappy tar types. I kiind of want to do more of the car, but yes, extra weight sucks. Tires are a big factor like the other said, as well.

how many pounds do you need to deaden the car a 'moderate' amount? It'd just be like always driving a small child, right? no biggie. haha
would adding 2 layers only over the areas with tires be better than 1 layer over everything?

I have Kuhma ASX? tires that cost me about 120 a piece, so they arn't cheap tires...its mostly wind noise.
| 03boxer4 | 02-06-2007 11:43 AM |
dynamat your entire floorboard
| chrisarella | 02-06-2007 12:21 PM |
Khumo SPT tires FTW. Good wear rating, insane grip (even in the wet), and extremely quiet. No all-season, but I'm moving to Florida next year so I don't care how they do in the snow. Try these after your other tires wear out. You won't be disappointed.
Then RAAMmat the floor, roof, and doors. There is a tape you'll need to use over the seams of the mat to get the most deadening out of it. And to finish it off, there is a spray/liquid called noisekiller that will work in those hard to mat areas like your pillars. You can check that out here:
http://www.quietnoise.com/noisekiller/noisekiller.htm
Now you've added about 200lbs to your car but if you don't competitively race then why should you care, it's quiet. Just drive around with less passengers and go on a diet.
If anyone does plan on racing competitively, then get over the noises. Your beefier suspension, camber plates, coilovers, and low-profile sticky performance tires will be loud no matter what. Then you'll eventually strip out most of the interior anyway to save weight.

eDead is made by Elemental Designs and is just like RaamMat/Dynamat, etc. Elemental Designs has kick-a$$ stereo equipment and prices and their eDead line is pretty good too. I have used their stuff before and it works great.

When I bought my '03 wrx, I noticed some wind noise. After a couple of weeks, it really got annoying. I took it to the dealer and they replaced something called the window "gusset" on the side mirrors. After that, no more noise.

Dynamat will really help. But you have to tear the interior of the car apart to lay it down properly...

home depot has roof sealer tape.
this is a rubber tar bottom with a foil overlay.
For $14 dollars, you get a 6"x25' roll, which = 12.5 sqft.
I'm picking this stuff up and lining the inside of my wheel wells with it. It's worth a try since it's so cheap

Here you go. Worked, made a noticeable difference, and still holding on in 95F.
