headlights from Optauto.com?
Hi,
Just surfing around some of the websites I've got bookmarked, and noticed this:
Headlight Set: Impreza WRX 2002
For $550. They don't seem to have any pictures of it on the site so just wondering if it's possible these could be the highly sought after JDM projectors for real cheap (by about $400!)? It just seems kind of fishy that they don't list other stock WRX parts, so I'm guessing these are not the regular headlights that we all have.
Thoughts?

More info on these lights would be greatly apreciated. :-D

In their add in the lastest SCC they show a pic, but not the price. They look to be at least the non-HID JDM lenses.

Jarrod, is that the March issue? I don't see them.

Um..I'm at work right now, but it's the issue that I just got in the mail day before yesterday, so probably. I think the ad was on the left side of a page, and the pic was near the bottom and was just the headlight, you couldn't even hardly tell what color the car was. Also the ad background was black. I think it was also towards the back of the issue.
Hope that helps,
Jay

Oops, I was looking at the Feb. issue. I try to find it in March... :)

They are currently Out Of Stock. Someone want to post a scan of he ad?

I called...
and spoke to their Tech-help line (or whatever that # was) and the guy checked (put me on hold twice to make sure) and stated, "they are NOT projector style lights, only clear ones". Which I take to mean factory style USDM headlights...
The search continues...

I wouldn't base it on "only clear ones". These are people who deal in high volumes of Alteza style lights which are billed as "Clear Taillights". From a certain perspective the JDM lights, projector or not, are "Clear" because the lens itself is clear, and houses the lights in seperate elements behind it.
The better question to ask is how many holes in the back for bulbs does it have? I'll try to get the ad scanned tommorow if nobody else gets to it first. Not that the ad means anything specifically, but it might help. Of course it'd help more if their "techs" could see their own ads.

exactly what jay said. remember, options buys in mad bulk! so it is possible for them to get these lights at the true price. well, time will tell. i for one am still not willing to spend 5 bills on headlamps, rather put it towards the motor or suspension:)

I called and talked to a guy and he looked up the part number. None in stock, expecting a shipment of the JDM ones, BUT the one they had was NOT JDM it was USDM and it had a clear turn bulb, not orange. He wasn't sure if the price would be the same for the JDM's.
BUT, like mike said, I have too many things to get before worrying about cosmetics...

Well, I'm a guinea pig I guess. I ordered the ones they had on their page since it said in stock. The ad in SCC shows JDM projectors. Their page says 2002. All JDM WRX's in 2002 have projectors except the RA.
If they are not projectors they will be returned promptly. This did sound a bit too good to be true.
How do you actually get through on the phone? I must have called that place 15 times in the last two days. Always a busy signal.

let us know if they are the JDM ones - that would be an amazing price for them.

i talked to options today and they said that its just like the usdm one except for the fact that it does not come with the huge orange bubble thing!

I e-mailed them asking if they are the projectors. I asked to cancel my order if not. I sent a picture along and an explination.
AFAIK there is no JDM WRX with our headlights without the orange bulb thing. Perhaps ours looks a bit different in that area though, but I've seen pictures of JDM WRXs with an orange bulb.

NON-HID Projector style lights
There's no way those are the projector style NON-HID's for that price, as as for them costing about $550.00 in Japan, that's BS, I have the Parts book right here and the exchange rate's gonna have to hit 200yen to the dollar to get even close.
ZAHNSTER: "All the JDM Models" do NOT have projector style headlights; these are ONLY on the Sti version Wagons and Sedans; the regular WRX's have the clear type lights and Projector or HID are not even an option on those. Only the STi's have the Option of the HID projector lights too.
I sell these cars every day; I know!

tokyograham,
Everything I've ever read has suggest that in 2001my all WRX(all Impreza) came with USDM type headlights. As an expensive option, there was the Projector Style HID headlights with a chrome inside.
Then in 2002my all WRX(maybe all Impreza) came with Projector style headlights non-HID with a blacked inside. Then as an option there was HID. The RA being the only model with USDM style headlights anymore.
I guess this information was wrong, but the people I've read this from seemed to know what they were talking about.
I guess as a question, why does the NBR on the Subaru site have Projector lights? Ah hell, why does the "Amusement Sedan" regular NB on their site have Projector lights?

where is APC when you need them!
judging by the potential market, someone should buy the JDM projtrs, make a fiberglass mold and start pumping these suckers out. You could probably use the lense from the US versions, and generic lamp assemblies (a la Morette). The unit cost would be a little high, but dam you'd make a grip.
I'd try it, but since these are headlights the potential liability would be a bitch. I'd probably end up getting sued by some 17-year-old's parents because his PIAA Hyper Plasma Bulb was burnt out while he tried do 80mph through a 20mph corner in the snow.

Here's another though:
www.autodynamic.com is the ricer shop of choice when it comes to putting projectors on cars that don't come with them. They have 'em avail for cars such as Civic, Mirage, Eclipse, and Sentra. Most of the suck but their latest version for the 7th gen civic is actually quite good. So good in fact that the website claims
SAE/DOT Compliant! SAE AIRST81DOT* Legal use on all public roads & highways. Certificate of Compliance pocket card is included.
Naturally there is no explination of what that * means.
Here they are:

Whoever made these could easily do the same for the WRX, and if fact it should be easier since they can copy that real thing, instead of having to reinvent the wheel as they did with the civic lamps.
I'll shoot them an email, doubt it will turn into much, but it's worth a shot. It can't be that hard! And these will make money!
**UPDATE** sent the email, we'll see what happens
**UPDATE** sent the same message to APC....

Dr.WOT...
Good job, man. I've been muttering the same thing to myself for the last few months. Some vendor in the US needs to "dup" these things and sell 'em for 5-600 bucks a pair. There's a mkt for sure...

Well, optauto is a strange place. It appears my order has been canceled since I can no longer look it up in their order status database. I never got a reply telling me they did this. It just looks like it's gone. I no longer seem to have an order history to look at in their account page.
This means they were definitly not projector headlights. Damnit. Gotta find somewhere else to spend my refund.

Just wanted to know what the cost would be if I were to live in Japan, went down to my local Subaru dealership's parts department and ordered the projector style headlights for my JDM Subaru Impreza WRX and were to pay in YEN?
Thanks for the info ahead of time.
