How to paint plastic trim in interior???

Hey guys I am planning on painting the plastic trim in the interior and I was wondering what the proper way to paint plastic was. I know that people have done this before and I'd like to know what steps they went through to do it. For example preping the plastic (ie. sanding, primer), how many coats of paint, clear coat, etc. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey I just asked this question yesterday. I listened to the person who told me his advice which was to buy rustoleum metallic paint (a shade that matches your car), and then to clear coat. I did about 3-4 coats of paint and 2 coats of clear coat to be sure. I looks great!! I'll post some pictures tomorrow to give you an idea of what it'll turn out like.

Thanks...I am going to try that today.

just use a super fine grit wet sand paper to help the paint stick alittle better.

fine sand paper and primer...

several thin coats of paint...

questions

where did u get the paint to do this......can u show me the cans of paint u used ..and where can i buy the paint,...and did u cover up the other things u didnt want painted or did u somehow remove the parts u wanted to paint...and how hard was this to do??

thans a lot for the help
Subie Gal 07-03-2001 04:34 PM

i painted the carbon fiber trim so it was easy to remove...

but... remove allthe dash parts...they pop right out for the most part... some require a screwdriver...

mask off what you dont want painted
sand gently....
primer...

used model car/plane (spray) paint on mine... got it at a hobby shop....

but i suppose rust-o-leum or the likes will work... and that can be had at Sears or Wal Mart or just about anywhere...

rust-o-leum may or may not eat the plastic.

The safest bet is to use the plastic model paint, or test a small area first before doing the whole peice.

I just did mine yesterday with rustoleum paint and clear coat on my rally blue RS. It turned out really good.
BrysImpreza 07-03-2001 05:13 PM

Rustoleum takes FOREVER to dry, I used "Plasti-cote Car Color" it coats better then rustoleum and it drys much quicker. I clean the parts very well with alcohol and then did 3 coats of the paint, used a hairdryer to bake it on, waited about 20 minutes after the 3 coats, then did 2 layers of clear-coat to ensure it wouldn't flake.
The Rustoleum took over 24 hours to fully dry, the Plasti-coat took less then 2 hours... very nice if you actually have to drive your car that day.

Hey Brian, this is pat, I am the one with the blue interior. It only took me 5 hours. I left plenty of time for drying, if you did this before, did it flake off soon after? That's the only thing I'm worried about.
Subie Gal 07-03-2001 05:44 PM

no flakes... no chips...

been bout 2 months... and countin...

no chips, no flakes, no nothing, even after my girlfriend accidentally raked her rings or nails across the pieces numerous times.

B Tapper-I'd say silver!
metoo 07-03-2001 07:59 PM

how about a fade job

blue into stock silver then clear coated. Gage plate is done too.
Basshead 07-03-2001 09:19 PM

metoo that is filthy man!! was it airburshed??..very nice
MattJP 07-03-2001 10:07 PM

Meetoo - That is very cool (and so are all of the rest)! I'm inspired!

Hey, b_tapper, check out some hobby shops like AB Charles in Dormont. I've seen some crazy cool colors in the little spray bomb cans. My kid painted his Skyline model a color real close to the Midnight Black. I think it was a special label Testors paint for Boyd Coddington (?), the guy who does those wild customs. Come to think of it, that Kandy Apple Eggplant that he used on Cadzilla (for ZZ Top) would look sweet. Hmmm.
metoo 07-03-2001 11:13 PM

We don't need no stinking airbrush!

Duplicolor Metal Flake Custom Color from Autozone
Midwest Formula U clear polyurethane varnish (20127) from any hobby shop that sell R/C airplanes

It came out the can perfectly. The fade was a breeze. The paint comes out in an ultra fin mist.

the gauge plate look better than the picture shows
UnderAgeEnthusiast 07-04-2001 01:36 PM

scarabs

That is nuts MEETOO! U R 2 good!

Metoo,
Did you paint the air vents also or just the center trim and guage trim?
If you did, do you have any pictures that show the whole dash?

Thanks
metoo 07-06-2001 09:13 AM

No, I just put small blue Hella decals on them. I couldn't figure out how to remove the vents and I was scared to try.
GRNMTNRS 07-06-2001 12:45 PM

Has anyone painted the door/window bezzels on the MY02 RS/WRX the same color as the radio bezzel? I want to do it, but I want to get a perfect match, so if anyone has done this please post a pic and what paint you used.

Thanks

P.S. metoo, dash kit looks great.
Silver_Bell_WRX 07-06-2001 10:56 PM

Thats cool.

If I dicided to paint mine I think I will venture into pulling the vents too.

Thanks
grnlantern1 07-07-2001 12:14 AM
