cf hood issues part 1

subyrally 01-20-2006 01:46 AM

cf hood issues
i just got a vis cf hood for my 00 impreza. ive noticed that he center of the hood is rather flexable atspeeds over 55mph and lifts rather noticably over 65. has anyone else had this issue with light weight hoods? also, has any one found a way to keep the denter from lifting with out loosing the scoop?

also, i want to put in th stock vents from my hood, but the holes need to be trimmed slightly, can i just sand em down or use a dremel to open the holes up a little bit? ive never really done much with carbon fiber before.

thanks for the help, and i did search before i posted.

peace
tim c.

Have you thought about getting hood pins? If you don't mind the look that should solve the lift problem... unless it's only the hood scoop lifting, in which case I'm not sure how to solve that but if it's bolted in tightly I don't think it would fly off independently on the highway.

Now you know what we with 02 and up wrx/sti's feel like with the stock hoods.

i thought about hood pins, but the front is secure on the latch and the rear isnt moving. i think its the scoop pulling up on the hood at speed. i doubt pins would fix the lifting issue with the scoop, unless i put em in the middle of the hood next to the scoop.

and subieworx, ive driven quite a few 02+ wrx's, they never flexed as much as my hood was the other day. granted, the winds were strong that day, something like 30-50mph. that might have been part of it.

You think??
RSman2.5 01-20-2006 06:06 PM

I have the same car with the same hood. You should be fine. Mine does the same thing at higher free way speeds. I think it is the wind pulling up on the hoodscoop. The added lift just causes the hood to flex because it is light and thin. I would just check to make sure the hoodscoop is really tight, that could be the only problem. I have had my hood on for years and have no pins, never had a problem.
You think??
i know that was the problem, but i was still concerned about it cause it still lifts even on calm days.
STi-JDM 01-20-2006 11:48 PM

get the hood pins... :D it's worth it... trust me...
subyrally 01-21-2006 01:00 AM

I use to think the same thing. It solved my problem. My hood and scoop use to flap everywhere. To the point where I was scared to to drive fast. I have hood pins now and the hood is solid. I would do it just for safety. Remember your latch on the hood is in fiberglass so eventually it will weaken an crack. It might work great now, but sooner ot later.

would be great if they made a non tacky hood pin set, i wouldnt mind em if they didnt have the crap thats above the hood. i can deal with the lock rings, but i dont like the pins and retaining clips that stick out on top of the hood.

I had this problem with my '02 and I removed the seal around my intercooler. Did you put the stock blockoff plate on the c/f hood? If not then you could try turning the scoop around and see if it helps(it does look ok). I got some hood pins from "paperchasin" that are carbon fiber and have a flushmounted key, not the pin that sticks up.

hmm, that sounds like it could be a good idea

you can get hood locks that lock with a cylindrical key and barely protrude above the hood. I've seen them on the Tarmac USA WRX, not sure who makes them

smashy smashy!!

yeah, i am thinking about hood pins, i like the idea of the flush mounted pins that were mentioned. i was looking at hood pin kits at work tonight, the mr. gasket and apc kits are a bit too ricey for my liking, granted, the mistergasket kit looks to be the better of the two.

....I've had to grind off and extract the key lock type after they rust a bit and refuse to function properly....or the key breaks....or they spin just spin.....or gets lost....or.....

CF hoods are mostest bestest left to the place that they really belong....the koo-koo show car

eh, i actually noticed the difference in handling that taking the weight off of the hood made. i like the hood on the car, it looks good and is super light.
TooLow67 01-22-2006 10:19 AM

do they made black hood pins? or maybe a blackish annodized pin kit? this way it wouldnt look at bad against the dark cf.

CF hood for $150....

the aluminum one can be had for what you would pay a dealer for the steel one.....factory fit, factory part. No brainer.
Hondaslayer 01-22-2006 08:34 PM

Scotty,

An Aluminum hood for an RS is rather difficult to come by, and pricey. Not to mention he will have to have it painted afterwards as well.

Rough guesstimate, about $800.

CF hood, about $500.....

subyrally 01-22-2006 09:36 PM

well, if you can find an afordable aluminum hood and trunk for the gc impreza, let me know, granted, i still like the look of carbon fiber and i love the price i paid for it.
