How do I make black chrome? part 1

kungfooren 12-08-2003 01:26 AM

how do i make black crhome?
i don't want just cleared headlights. i want to get the JDM look. it's a little diff. it has either a "black chrome" or "gunmetal" color. pretty sweet.

how would i go about this? thank you!
eurojax 12-08-2003 01:43 AM

are you talking about the headlight mod? Where you take out the ring around the headlight and spray paint it black? If so, search nasioc for it, It's posted probably 30 times somewhere on here.

Yeah, he's talking about the headlight mod, but he wants the part you usually paint black to be 'black chrome'. Someone mentioned about using black transparent paint, which I never heard of, on the stock chrome, but I haven't seen any pics of anyone trying it.
drifterx 12-08-2003 02:30 AM

i did gunmetal on my stockers. i dont have pics since it was about a year ago since i had them. i sold them to someone on this forum i think them were back east somewhere. look around

when I do this (i.e. when i get a subaru) I'm gonna try to use some nightshades on the chrome section when doing the koji mod. Should come out like a tinted dark chrome color? You could try that.
scrappydoo 12-08-2003 06:34 AM

Try vht nightshades. It's spray tint, but worked pretty good when I did my friends' headlights. Make sure you use only 1 coat or it will look black.
zombiedog 12-08-2003 06:52 AM

Painter here... You can use either a black metallic or prolly the best idea is the transparent paint. Its made to black out tail lights etc. but would work best for this mod. 1 or 2 light coats would be schweet!
scrappydoo 12-08-2003 06:57 AM

I used 2 coats of the vht and it made the headlights look solid black.
kungfooren 12-08-2003 11:13 AM

exactly. i'll try that. i really want that "JDM" look. :)

question is will it stick to the chrome? -i've heard that certain paints need undercoats first.

i'm actually really new with paints. can i get that kind of paint from any craft store?

is the VHT nightshade a transparent coat?
drifterx 12-08-2003 03:01 PM

i thought you were suppose to use a hi temp paint. as far as the jdm look my jdm projectors arent black chrome just a flat black. i think the black chrome was only on the jdm hids (if im wrong someone please correct me). so it you are only after the look just get regular hi temp flat black for your closest pep boys, schucks, napa or whatever is in your area. when you go to bake them i think the oven temp and time are for most which have electric instead of natural gas. if you have gas then reduce the heat by 50 degrees and take some time away also. otherwise you are going to have a big mess and youre gonna need new headlights.

good luck

Whay high temp?? Temps are in the low 100's max inside there. On a hot day, in the sun, with the lights on...
Subie2.5RS2003 12-08-2003 04:52 PM

can you use regular spray paint or do you need engine paint because im very curious about this too, and if you can use reg spray paint y not a gloss black

The lights get real hot when you turn them on...It has nothing to do with the ambient air temprature:rolleyes:

The paint used may bubble or peel if it cant take the heat.
Wagon Joe 12-08-2003 06:56 PM

here are mine... semi-gloss black.

wagon joe, sweet.

oh. so what does the JDM look like? the cleared out USDMs don't look JDM right?
Subie2.5RS2003 12-08-2003 11:55 PM

uncle scotty im also running xenons on my car so i guess i would need the high temp paint
scrappydoo 12-09-2003 04:21 AM

My buddy doesn't have a problem with the vht. It is transparent, but if you use more than one coat you can't see any of the chrome underneath. I used just plain old semi-gloss on mine and haven't had any problems, so it's up to you if you wanna use high-temp paint.
Here's a pic of mine:

Just so you can tell how dark the vht stuff is, I used two coats of it on my CLEAR corner markers.

Read closer, I said with the lights ON and HOT ouside. It doesn't get hot enough to warrant special paint inside.

Gee, how do we remove the lense... In the oven at 150-120 for 15 minutes.

If your bulbs made more heat than that your headlights would fall apart.

Paint can take 150+ easy.

Who cares u an F'n roller and house paint.

matte graphite color paint looks really good, imo
zombiedog 12-10-2003 09:15 AM

Apparently you can only use 1700 degree aluminum exhaust paint because it gets over 1000 degrees inside your headlighs. No 1500. No 1700.
sick1.8t 12-10-2003 10:02 AM

i believe i used 500deg. paint on mine and 6 months later nothing bad yet. probably could have gone with something less but its what i had sitting around
scrappydoo 12-10-2003 10:25 AM

I used normal semigloss paint. I've had it for about a year without issues.

the current "JDM" projector headlights w/the flat black inner housings were preceded by a black chrome version. They are very difficult to source and expensive as heck.....seen them go for upwards of $900 USED.

Some company sells a spray paint tha looks like anodizing. Try looking for that in black.
kungfooren 12-11-2003 05:01 PM

burned. lol.

ok. i'm clearing them next week. would it be a bad idea to clear em now, then take them apart again once i get paint?
lupohki 12-14-2003 09:08 PM

I was googling for ideas and found that Testors offers a metallic black and a transparent black, but the tower hobbies site says that it's highly flammable and to avoid heat. Anyone have experience with hobby paint and its heat tolerance?
