Paint any better on newer Subarus?

The paint on my car (MY00 2.5RS) sucks... You breathe on it wrong and it chips...
I've always wondered if Subaru has done anything about this problem and if the paint was any better on the newer (02+) Subarus?
Anyone know?

nope. i beleive paint these days isn't as durable as a result of making paint safer for the environment.

What about all the chips floating around in the air?

Nope, I can say with confidence that the current paint is no better than the earlier years.

05 checking in, it's still crap.

05 San Remo Red (aka, mixed clear coat, not an additional layer) my car looks like red swiss cheese.
Subaru uses very thin paint and they use more environmentally friendly paint now too.

Fellow San Remo Red brother! lol. SRR and Aspen White are the worst because Subaru mixes the clear coat into the paint and thats it. On all of the other colors they put a final layer of clearcoat over the paint.

My 06 SRR just had its hood and fenders repainted by SOA because of crappy paint.

06 sti sucks too, already has some corrosion in the engine compartment!

Are you from that big long SRR Paint thread? How did you get them to paint it? My hood and fenders need it bad.

< 5000 miles and already using touch-up paints in 4 different places from chips and stuff and from looking at the chip, I can tell you the paint compare to my last car (350z) is like its missing 2-3 coats...

I have an 06, and had a 05 for 1.5 year (long story) and it's the same crappy paint.
But I think they might have improved the windshields. I went through 2 on my 05 and I know lots of others that had many cracked windshields, but I was driving down the highway the other day and boulder the size of a softball came off a truck, bounce off the ground and came flying at me. I used my cat like reflexes to avoid the asteroid, but somehow it still managed to hit my windshield.
It hit it hard enough to scratch it, but no cracks.

I posted a thread on the general forum about 3M paint protective film. I have checked into it for my 06, and although its sortof pricey, its good insurance for some of the things you guys have been mentioning. You can by kits made specifically for your model, or you can buy the film in bulk rolls and cut it out yourself. The place I am looking at having do my car is mobile, and they will come to me at work too. Google "paint protective films" and you will find TONS of information on them. They make the stuff in anywhere between 6-10 Mils, so it can take a pretty good hit from a rock.
A good friend of mine has it on his Ferrari and swears by the stuff. I am looking into it both for rock/bug protection as well as some barrier of protection against the idiots in Chicago that dont know how to park on the street.

I had to talk to some experts and learn what to look for and what to say to the subaru people... that and a lot of determination and patience. PM me if you'd like any more details.

i take such good care of my paint on all my cars and my 06 seems to have a haze on some parts of the trunk like its fading but it looks as if a buffing would help but i real disappointed with suby paint otherwise its the best car ive owned. and i wax it at least once a month the hood roof and trunk and it has this weird haze only in certain spots but im afraid to buff it and take off took much and get into the cleat coat. but to answer yes i believe suby paint is inferior to at least my last five hondas

That is perhaps the worst paragraph I have ever read.

I have some little pits in my front bumper from rough sand/gravel/tiny pebbles kicked up and a ~1/4" chip in my back bumper

environmentally friendly? haha is that true, i always thought they were just CHEAP. i mean how long have people been painting cars. come on subaru.
| kainam00 | 08-24-2006 10:15 AM |
Why the hell would Subaru want to be environmentally friendly anyway?
I mean, these cars are all about AWD, and AWD is all about driving off-road, over deer and cute little bunnies and such.

05 aspen white here...
after 20k I have: (not even exagerating either)
-4 dings (always park in the back of parking lots)
-62 paint chips
-1 small spot that is bubbling on my roof
-complete paint failure on the edge of one of my wheel wells.
And I am anal about my car's paint (autopian member and details cars as a part time job)
I'm probably going to have my car repainted using bmw's white that goes on the m3

what manufacturer makes the most durable, dependable paint? are there one or two that are hands down better than all the rest?
| Tang 06 i wagon | 08-24-2006 05:07 PM |
I have an 06... my car is 10 months old, and it now looks like it's several years old...
Dings on many panels, scratches EVERYWHERE, swirl marks, scuffs, you name it..
Hopefully the inside doesnt deteriorate like the outside.

I had a 04 Tacoma and the paint seemed pretty good in comparison to my Subaru...
I knew Subaru paint sucked going into this. So I go through the touchless car wash once a week and wax after a hand wash every other month. You really really have to minimize contact to the paint because it will turn to crap really fast....

well, my 06 seems pretty clean and nice, i polish and wax it every now and then, and i also got this package for the exterior and interior, which is suppose to help protect the paint, that maybe why? also has 10 year warranty on it, so if anything happens to it, just take it to them and they'll take care of it
but it looks better than my friends subie's paint
he has an 02 wrx

my 02 is in piss poor shape, especially in the front. with all the highway driving i do, the front end doesnt look blue anymore, it looks white now. and the scars from random jerks egging it, doesnt help it either.
i try to wax it as often as possible but cant protect it forever. i should have bought the clear bra.
