painting stars on OEM badge part 1

painting stars on OEM badge
well i have searched over all the forums for hours and i cant find anyone who has done this.

I found this link

http://www.t-wrx.net/wrx/mods/Badge.html

several months ago, but the instructions are a bit vague and there are no pictures to guide me along. i want to paint the stars of the stock badge red (with the same black background). is this a common mod? Has anyone successfully done it to offer some more instruction/pictures/ideas?

Did it a few years back
I did this a number of years ago on my old 2.5 RS. Here's the thread:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132460

The photo I provided is pretty crappy, but I believe this is what you're trying to do with the red. It's not very common as that link you posted is the only other one I've ever seen. It's more common to just change the background color.

The instructions you found are pretty spot on - Nail Polish remover is your friend. I'd mask off the outside of the badge to avoid spilling any on the front that could potentially damage the finish. The recesses on the back are deep enough that you can leave a small pool of nail polish remover sit there. The background color comes off quickly, but it takes lots of time for the chome to soften up and separate from the badge. Once a little bit lifts, the rest will start to peel off pretty quickly. I used toothpicks to scrape at the chrome and loosen it up.

Once you have a completely clear badge, wash it and inspect it close up. I had really small flecks of chrome left behind in a couple of spots the first time, so you may need to repeat the procedure.

Painting is easy as you're just filling in the recesses. Several light coats will ensure a good, opaque coverage. Any paint that finds its way past the stars and ring is easily removed. Just like the factory paint, the background color can be painted over top of everything on the back side of the badge. After the background color dried, I followed up with a clear coat to help protect the paint in case I had to later remove the badge and apply new tape to it.

I may be doing this with the new STi - black background with the STi pink for the stars and the ring (to match the grill emblem). Maybe then, I'll have some better pics to post :o ! Cheers/Jim

wow! Thanks, that was really helpful. also glad to hear that painting the stars is easy. i took off my badge and i might start working on the removal of the paint tomorrow.

couple questions - do you think goof off would work just as well (without messing up the plastic?)

also, i guess the chrome just starts to fall off after being soaked for a while?

i hope this works out... i am going to be doing red stars black background which will really offer a PERFECT color match to my current color scheme. so if i am successful i will post pics. Thanks for the advice.

No problem. I don't have any experience with Goof-Off; I really can't find it overseas. I've heard it works great with adhesive residue, but don't know if it would work with paint or chrome. The chrome just sort of loosens up after soaking in the fingernail polish remover. I just kept jabbing at it with a toothpick until I noticed it starting to lift.

Good luck with the badge project and let us know how it goes. Cheers/Jim

well i managed to make (some) progress today.. i first tried fingernail polish, but that wasnt working too great, so i switched to the more powerful goof off (which ate a hole through my plastic container lol). it took off the paint much faster (although still required a couple hours of soaking and rubbing).

Most of the chrome came off with the paint, but there is still a tad bit left in the corners of the stars... i tried using a toothpick to scrape it out but it doesnt seem to be going anywhere. i am tempted to let the badge soak in goof off overnight but that might be too harsh - dont want to put a hole in it after all ... instead, i might soak the stars with fingernail polish remover.

the tough part of this is definitely getting rid of that chrome - i am still not sure how i am gonna get it all out. but hopefully if i cant get it all out it wont be too noticeable after i paint it...

i am gonna hopefully finish the badge completely in the next couple of days and at which point i will post pics.

How are you guys getting the clear cover off of the badge???
WRXGuyInUSA 12-31-2005 11:39 PM

My grill doesn't have one... :(
NW OBS 01-01-2006 01:26 AM

Hey. Good luck on your effort! Great idea and didn't know it could be done. I just changed the background of the star badge on the rear and an 'i' badge on the grill to match my black car. Both look great. Should have thought about colors for the star... no that smart. :(

pffft, WRB with PINK stars!
Amazake 01-01-2006 11:26 AM

Think about using nail polish rather than paint.
The color palate is infinate, some have glitter or metallic flakes, some are flat while some others are shiney

Just on the 3rd weekend of months ending in Y

Seriously it is cheaper, and better color choices.

a few more tips...

I tried nail polish and "damaged" teh finish on the front of my emeblem. to fix it I sanded it with 1200 grit sandpaper till smooth. I bought "3M polishing compound" from a local paint store (automotive body shops use it to polish clear coat) and proceeded to rub the compound onto the surface and it looked shinier than new, no more blemish.

laquer thinner is your friend when it comes to removing the paint off the back of the emblem, I would still tape the face of the emblem to avoid any spillage but it doesnt usually eat through plastic if wiped off right away.

the trick with laquer thinner is to use a good amount and have a bunch of clean rags handy. I did mine in less than an hour and a buddys in about 30min. thats including removal, painting and drying (used a blow dryer and the So Cal sun to expedite the process)

i'm not sure if i am understanding you or not, but there is no clear cover. if you pop your badge off the grill, you will notice that the flip side has the indentations of the stars on it. you paint the back of the badge, and that color shows through to the other side. i have pictures of that and I will post them when my project is complete. I am also gonna write up a tutorial over on clubwrx that i will post a link to and that will have all the pictures in it.

actually, i use the same red spray paint for all my accents... its duplicolors caliper paint - i like it cause i can use it on anything (my rims, calipers, engine accents, and now my badges). you cant use nail polish on everything, either. do you think it would even last very long as a permament "paint"?

yeah my badge is pretty scratched up on the front but i think its because it was just like that before. i think i will do what you did (sand and polish) when i am all done if it looks bad.

i used goof off which is pretty potent but as far as i could tell it didnt damage the plastic on the badge at all.

your turnaround time for doing a badge is fast - i wish i could do it that fast. are you painting the background only or the stars as well?

i plan on finishing my badge tomorrow or the next day (i've only been working on it on and off) and once its done i will post pics. it wont be on the car for a while though as i am gonna paint the grill and add some gutter guard first.

Yeah, you understood me to a tee. It's all so very clear now!! (smacks heel of hand against forehead) :o :o

Thanks for showing me some compassion. I'll go away and hide for awhile, now.

Thanks again. :)

All y'all using paint thinner, try Easy Off to strip the paint. It will attack the paint without fear of damaging the plastic.

Make sure you've got plenty of ventilation, the fumes are bad.

For chrome, use bleach. It will almost instantly corrode the chrome plating to nothing.

hmm... interesting note about the bleach.. i am not sure if it is "real" chrome or not but that would be interesting to try. too bad i already painted though, can't try it myself.

here is how it turned out; i am quite happy with it. like i said before i will be posting a how to thread over on ClubWRX (and maybe also ScoobyMods) in a few days as i have many pictures from the entire process.

Durmiente,

Great job on the badge. This is really close to how I plan to have my badge looking once I tear into that project. Mine will be a couple of shades pinker to match the the STi's grill emblem. It looks like you were able to get rid of that last bit of chrome you mentioned earlier. Should look fantastic on your car with the matching accents!

I've successfully used bleach to remove the chrome plating from model parts - it does a great job. I experimented once with the chrome S U B A R U letters from the trunk (an extra set I had lying around) and it literally took days to get a partial removal from one letter (I think it's a very thick coating) vs. just a few minutes to strip model parts. Since the plating on the badge should be thinner, it may just work once the paint is removed. I'm going to give that a shot when I do mine and see what happens.

Kudos for a good write-up on this little cosmetic mod. Cheers/Jim

yup, check the first link in the original post, T-WRX did it gold stars (what i was considering originally back when i was gonna paint my rims gold). I ended up painting my rims black/red so the badge was meant to compliment them...
FNCrazy 08-09-2016 04:26 PM

I know this is an old thread, but is this a mod that someone would be willing to do for me? Stock BRZ emblems with blue, want it black with red stars. I want to avoid the overlay route.

Anyone talented looking to make 35 cents? :) PM Me
