Mitsubishi WRC team future .....

Mitsubishi future called into question
19 Jul, 02:26
The French press has cast doubt on Mitsubishis continued participation in the 2004 World Rally Championship.
The rumours, published in the newspaper LEquipe, suggest that the Japanese team may withdraw following the Deutschland Rally at the end of August - a fortnight before the first ever World Championship rally in Japan.
Mitsubishi Motor Sports results have not been good since the launch of the Lancer WRC04. Moreover, the companys image in Japan has been severely damaged by revelations about accidents involving its lorries in the 1990s. Taking part in a rally at home might be deemed inappropriate under the circumstances, despite its long and successful tradition in the sport.
Entries for the Rally of Japan close on July 26.

Word, when Mitsubishi left Prorally last year they effectively took Subaru with them. Who was SRTUSA going contend against in the open class when Gr. Ns are winning all the rallies now!

I hope Mitsubishi stays in WRC and keeps building EVO's for the US. The company is in big trouble though. :(

It wouldn't seem to make sense for them to pull out right before their home rally. Although I could understand them taking out the team by the end of the season.

I know, however I just don't like Mitsubishi......
If they go away maybe Toyota will revive their rally division again, or maybe other makes like Volvo (I know it's a Focus) or others will join the race.....

Mitsubishi is the only manufacturer to sell a rally car in the USA aside from Subaru. Take Mitsubishi away and you've got Subaru with no competition. That would suck.

Mitsu is thinking about pulling out of WRC, not the Evo/WRX car market in the US. From business side, they're still gonna be around. And looks like they don't have that much influence in the WRC anyway. Subaru has better competitions ;)

Here is another take on that:
What's the point of being in rally if you aren't going to sell the cars?
Does Ford think that by winning with it's "Focus" that it is going to sell more 1.6L Zetec FWD POS?
Or Citroen sell more 95kW Xsaras?
Peugot?
I think we need more teams like Mitsubishi and Subaru that actually build cars that have the rally heritage in them, so that we can enjoy the fruits of their labour. /rant

Heh. Hey, has Mitsu put the active differentials back into their GpA car yet, or are they still running the passive ones they started the season with? Supposedly the active diffs are worth a few seconds a mile once they're set up right.

maybe mazda will jump in with their awd turbo mazda 6 they are making ;)
or if we are even more lucky (since ford owns mazda) they will finally bring an awd turbo focus to our shores (same chasis as mazda 3 right?)

I believe that Mazda is going to be introducing a MazdaSpeed verison of the Mazda 3 that is AWD and turbo. Which does share the same chassis as the Focus.

Mazda ?????
Maybe for a group N car, but a full and competitive WRC demands a lot more knowledge / work. Renault is much closer to being the next WRC team ;).

but Like I said earlier, Ford owns Mazda and Ford already has a WRC car (obviously). I don't think it's too far fetched.

Mitsubishi withdraws
23 Jul, 09:25
Mitsubishi has confirmed rumours that it will pull out of the World Rally Championship following the Deutschland Rally at the end of August.
The withdrawal is described as a temporary measure to enhance development of the car and cut costs. It will mean that the Japanese company will miss the first World Championship rally in its homeland, which takes place in early September.
The focus for the remainder of the season will be to develop the Lancer WRC. Mitsubishi Motors will use one or two selected European rallies as an intensive test and development platform for the Lancer WRC. The new WRC programme for 2004 will not affect Mitsubishi Motors long-term programme to the FIA World Rally Championship until 2006, a press statement claimed.

I would like to see another 2 teams added full time. That would give us (with the current WRC rules) 14 cars running competatively.

I don't think the engine will be a 2.0L turbo though... so it probably won't.
Ford doesn't wanna bring a AWD Focus to America cause... ummm... They would probably sell well... and be faster than the Mustang.
Edit:
If only AUDI would stop being so concerned about being a luxury car manufacturer... The S3 would be a great starting point for a rally car.. and they already use a heap of turbocharged engines with AWD... I guess they don't want to be beaten by "lesser" marques.

Didn't the FIA slap Hyundai with a major fine ($100k/rally) for pulling out of the season early last year? That's about all Mitsu would need right now...

Well maybe they should actually rally it (The Fabia). And why can't AUDI run it?
Citroen and Peugeot run separate WRC campaigns and they are from the same group of companies.

I'm pretty sure I read that there ARE Audi engineers now in Skoda's camp...
Might not help as much as you think- the almighty conquering Sport Quattros weren't as almighty as we all seem to remember- especially after the Peugeot 205 T16's showed up!!

I think the first statement was alluding to the fact that it would be disrespectful for Mitsubishi to run a rally in their home county with their current financial situation. Mitsubishi has very little money and I can see individuals in Japan seeing spending lots of money in motorsports as being a waste, almost flaunting, when they should be conserving.
As far as Mitsubishi's poor performance, I believe it was said somewhere that their current car is not even close to being comepetitive and they were working on chassis dynamics and the driver learning curve before bringing the rest of the car up to standard. As was mentioned, the car didn't have active diffs at the start of the season and it used a conventional gearbox, not an SMG. It seems as if it's more of a Group N drivetrain in a WRC chassis than a true WRC car.

I don't think it would "help" anything. I was mearly making a comment about wanting to see different manufacturers in WRC. The S3/Fabia would make a good car IMO and I would like to see SOMEONE rally it... as long as they don't beat Subaru ;)
