Attention ProRally fans.
For all you fans who attend (or try to attend) ProRally events in the US:
What would you like to see in the future at each event? More stuff to do? More entertainment? More access to the teams? Something fun at the service breaks?
Im involved in marketing and would love to hear anyone's ideas..... your idea may become a reality.

i think there should be something at the service breaks, maybe before the cars roll in or maybe after....maybe some kind of video game set up would be cool, where fans can play against each other and win stuff. Plus there should be more free stuff to give out..free stuff is always good.haha

Im involved with sponsorship marketing, I develop opportunities for sponsors to better interact with the fans. So this would involve all the prorally events.

You ready? Free stuff! Like suspensions, tires, bits... even signed merchandise (for free) would be cool... if signed from the driver who you sponsor. :D

Super Special Stage
Our rally buddies at rallyusa or American Rally Grp. did a super special stage much like that you would find in the WRC series. Its a huge success since the fans can get up close and watch the drivers compete on a closed identical dirt course..much different than spectating out in nowhere where you get to see the cars do a flying pass.
This SSstage is great for sponsors too since all the spectators get to to see the actual sponsor names on the cars..."seeing" is the name of the game in marketing isn't?! One year they did a ride-along on the special stage to raise money for a local club...hmm, that would be a fun ride!
I realize the SSStage is harder to create due to area size, but it sure makes a huge difference and is exciting to see your favorite ProRally driver (D.Higgins) kick some arse against other rally vets.
Also, people love stickers (including i-club members:)) and most of all, make some nice ProRally t-shirts of that exact event. Sponsors would love to have their name on an official ProRally shirt...Let us know how its going!
Cheers,
Davis

I agree with Dave. Super Special Stages would be huge for spectating. I think it would be alot more likely to get highlights from a SSS on ESPN or RPM 2Day.
| jesse370 | 01-24-2002 05:01 PM |
More spectator points, better support from the factory. At stpr there is a hotdog stand and a place selling rally videos and thats it. Swag would be cool but I would have to agree about a special stage but in alot of areas that it would be real hard to accomplish. Head to heads would be great though right before the stages start, but would than make it hard to get to the spectator points before they close the roads. But more spectator points would fix that.

Make it to the Rim of the World ProRally if you can (May 3-4-5). We do all that stuff. Freebys, press stage, free lunch (subaru) WRX test rides, Mitsu display, girls, Parce Expose, fast cars, factory teams, night running, service breaks, rally equip vendor displays, spectator stages, Speedvision, noisy cars, busted cars, mountain roads, cliffs, woods, hotels right there, cocktails, beer, food, possibly 100 car entry field this year, and a soft bed after the victory celebration Sat night! Did I say variable weather from heat to fog to rain? Most all the fun is free!

Special stages, free stuff, and definitely more team access, such as autograph/photo sessions, posters, demos, question and answer sessions with the drivers

Have a good TSD rally the day before the pro-rally. It can use some of the same roads the pro-rally uses. This will get the fans more active with the whole rally. Stickers are an inexpensive and effective solution also.

Two HUGE thumbs up for Phil Pausmer and his Subaru crew.
For those who have not made it to RIM, his post is all fact. For the spectator, RIM is the flagship rally in the US. If you can make it you have to go.

Subaru has done a VERY good job of bringing not only the sport, but the drivers to the public. Attend any ProRally event that the team is running and they are more than happy to talk to you, show you around. Truly good show.

At STPR they have a TSD the day before, which to me was the best part of going up there to spectate. It would have been better if it was on the roads that the rally was using, but I got to "explore" those on my own! :D You should contact what ever local people run TSDs and try to arrange events for the common man to run in before/after each Prorally. It makes you feel more a part of the sport.
Girls are nice too! ;)

Ramada Express, while not a ProRally, has a GPS rally that runs the second day on the same roads.
Pretty fun from what I understand. Two Monteros rolled this year.

I just got back from Sno*Drift(yes, I left early!). I met up with several other Mid-West people when I got there. We were in a group of about 8-9 Scoobys. An Outback rolled up and out popped a bunch of guys in blue coats! They handed out stickers, hats and posters. I had to ask for a coat and got a no needless to say. They even got Ramana Laggaman and Mark Lovell to come over and BS for about a half hour. They were both pretty friendly and willing to answer all questions. That was my first ProRally but I tell you it won't be my last! All the other fans were friendly and courtious too.
I must agree about having a SSS though. It would make it great for people to see more than just a couple of turns.

More toilets for the competitors at the service areas. That
way we don't have to all stand on the side of the road after
a 26 mile transit making poor Gail Trues and Pam McGarvey
jealous. :D
(thats an honest answer, btw)
More stuff like Ojibwe in the service towns: Get the local
"whatever" to come and sell hot/cold food whatnot to
competitors, crew, and spectators. Good for all of
us! There was a tiny table of privateers doing this
at sno*drift. (cheerleaders or something) but it was
unorganized (as was the entire fricking service area)

Solid rules and people who understand them to enforce them would be nice. The rest is all BS if you dont get that right first. No point having a show if the guys you all want to see dont show up because they are screwed over by crappy rules/enforcers. :(
Send that message to your SCCA Pro Rally contacts.

Yes the tsd before the stpr is a great thing. I learned to drive on those roads, and had the good luck of being able to blast around on those roads for four years and learned alot about my abilities and those of my cars.....I'm a far better driver for it. I hope to be able to take my wrx that I'm ordering this year.

How about a local radiostation with updates or play by play.
It was impossible to tell what was going on without inside knowledge or checking the leaderboard at service.

I'm with johnfelstead. Get the series straight before building a circus around it.
Plus, if somebody doesn't think the rally itself is entertainment enough, maybe they ought to be at a Nascar race. Aren't these potential gimmicks the same type of stuff that they used in an effort to draw attention to NATCC (hmmm.... I wonder what's similar between the now-defunct NATCC and Pro Rally... I wonder...).
IMO, and I could be wrong, most of the folks who head out to Rallys are too busy chasing cars in the woods to have time to pay attention to much else.
Matt
P.S.- I don't think the teams could be any more accessible. Half the time the big name drivers are just standing out on the side of the road with everybody else.

After the deal they are giving Pat Richards at Sno*Drift I have to agree Axiochus and johnfelstead. They should have their $#!* together before they start the season.

A super special or similar would be great, like the in-town stage formerly run in Maine (cancelled for 2001).. It's more of a safety hazard (a Civic almost crashed into Dunkin Donuts in 2000) but an excellend show for the spectators and those too lazy to venture thru questionable conditions miles into the woods. :)
Another vote for Subaru's great showing at ProRally. In 2001, got to meet Lovell, Schieble & the team with NESIC. Got an autograped hat (wear it everywhere to see who notices), a poster, and a "nice car" from an SOA guy about my then three-week-old TS. Left a big impression, and we'll be returning as spectators for our third Maine Forest Rally in July.

I have to back everyone up on the SSstage idea... It would be awesome, but difficult to implement (CTPR could do it at the old vol. Army depo)...
Anyway, I'd love to have easy access to High Quality Maps of the Stages and Area!!!!
That was the biggest pain last year at CTPR. If they rally had not been delayed 1 hr, we would have missed the first stage completely!
