2004 Trespasser's Wil/100 Acre Woods Event

Hey guys,
Here my account of the past weekend's rally event in Missouri.
Trespassers Wil/100 Acre Wood Rally
Salem, MO Feb 19-20, 2004
Our SCCA Pro Rally Team for this event consists of:
Chris Driver
Alex Co-Driver
Will Crew Chief
George Crewman

Paul - Rally-Now.com rep
I drove up from Austin, TX to Ft. Worth Tuesday night so I could meet Wednesday morning to head out to the Trespassers Wil/100 Acre Wood Rally. The team left for the event on Wednesday, so Chris and Alex could make the practice stage on Thursday to tune the rally computer and learn how to work with each other. The hotel we stayed at was located about 60 miles away from Rally HQ so we have to get up pretty early on Thursday to get to Salem on time.
Thursday morning we get to Salem from the hotel, and we get the car off the trailer. Rally HQ is located at Dent County Motors which has the showroom setup for reg and the shop setup for tech. The Public Relations master, Eileen Waters, asks if we can go to one of the schools in the area to let the kids see the car and also if Chris could take some city officials out on the practice stage. We agree to both and once we get the car off the trailer we head to the Salem R-80 Upper Elementary school not far from Rally HQ. The school we are going to has about 280 students from Grade 4 6. The kids were excited to see the car and were allowed to sit in both the driver and co-driver seats. A couple of the kids actually got to get strapped into the co-driver seat harness.

We left the school to head back to Rally HQ to get registered and go through tech inspection. Reg goes ok but Chris ran into problems at tech. It seems that the car has illegal pulleys installed and they have to be replaced otherwise the car gets bumped into Open Class. Well we start scrambling to find a set of stock pulleys for a 2.5L motor. We look around and see a 99 Subaru Forester sitting on the lot not 20 feet from the car. A couple of the guys ask one of the sales people at Dent County Motors to look at the Forester and they pop the hood to verify they pulleys would work. We ask if we can swap the pulleys and they flatly refused. Were now starting to panic a bit as we start calling Subaru dealers in the area. With no luck with the Subaru dealers, we hit a stroke of good luck. One of the spectators hanging around the area has a 2.5RS and he agrees to let us swap pulleys with him. So Will and I, eventually, start pulling the pulleys off so we can swap them. Now another problem came up. We didnt have the tools necessary to pull the pulleys off. Fortunately, the competitor next to us lent us his tools so we could do the swap. So a big THANK YOU goes to Steve Peret from WA for bailing us out. Steve is a super nice guy that runs a Civic in G2 class. All the time this is going on, George is in the car trying to get the Terra-Trip Rally computer working. It seems that one of the pieces needs to be replaced and that shows up from UPS mid-afternoon. So now everything is working and the car is now legal, so we head to the practice stage.
I go out on stage with Paul and start taking pictures and doing a bit of filming. We make our way to the first 90 degree right hand turn and take pictures and film a bit. We get the corner marshal to call in for us a ride back to the start line.

When we get there, the mayor of Salem, Gary Brown, is climbing in the car. Gary is huge supporter of the SCCA Performance Rally series being in Salem and Dent County. This was the 3rd year that Trespassers Wil/100 Acre Wood Rally had been held in Salem.

Friday we head out to Ellington for the Trespassers Wil and the start of the SCCA Club Championship. When we get there, it is brutal cold and over cast. Well brutal cold for this Texan at least. The first stage is rather short and has a spectator area not far from the start. Within the first couple hundred feet of the start is a jump coming out of a creek bed. Im there taking pictures and filming as the car start off.

After all the cars had left stage 1, Paul and I leave to try and find Stage 3. Now keep in mind this is my first ever rally, my first time trying to photograph a rally and my first time in Missouri. This isnt really working to my favor. I didnt get the rally maps I needed for Friday and we spent most of the day trying to catch up to everyone instead of taking photos. If fact, while we were trying to get to Stage 3, we see the Green Light car and ask how to get to Stage 3. Theres some commotion going on over the radio and they just tell us to follow them. So not knowing any better, we do as they say. Now as were following them, I notice that we pass the ATC for Stage 2, but we still continue to follow them. We end up at the scene of an accident. One of the competitors had come around a corner to fast and hit a tree dead and was blocking the road. The driver and co-driver were in pretty rough shape and the driver was helivacd out to St. Louis and the co-drive went to a local hospital where he was later sent to St Louis as well. The car following had also hit a tree stump but was in much better condition as they werent going as fast.
We finally get the sweep team to lead us and 3 other competitor cars off the stage and to the main highway where we head to Stage 4. Paul and I get to Stage 4 in time to get setup on the stage for photographs, but it starts to get dark and when it gets dark out there, you cant see anything. We wait for a bit and start to hear cars, so we get setup to start trying to take pictures. Now the cars are going very slowly through the stage and were both wondering what was going on.

We make our way back to ATC and get in the truck to follow Green Light out to MTC. When we get to MTC, Chris tells us the stage was cancelled. Great. Well that explains why everyone was going so slowly. Will and George get the car fueled up and checked over, then Chris and Alex head for the next stage. The rest of us pack up and head back to Rally HQ and look for a place to eat.

Saturday was beautiful. The weather warmed up and the sun came out and made for some really nice weather. We get to Salem and all of the cars sit in downtown Salem so all the residents can see at the cars and talk with the drivers and co-drivers. Chris was asked for autographs from some of the schools kids we had met from Thursday and also by the mayor.

I, learning from my mistakes the day before, find Eileen and get a map book of the rally stages for Saturday. So now we know exactly where were going. Chris had lost some pretty serious time on the night stages the night before so he was playing catch up to most of the people in his class. We get to Stage 2 and setup on a pretty nasty little hairpin turn and I mean nasty. Most of the top competitors coming through missed the turn completely and there was one car that almost took me out yet like a hard headed idiot I stayed in that spot. We stayed there until the last car went by and then packed up and headed out to Stage 3.

After Stage 2, there was a MTC so we had plenty of time to get to Stage 3 before it started. With my new handy map, I was able to get Paul and me to the areas we needed without having to start at ATC. We find a nice little corner on Stage 3 with some corner marshals and get setup. The cars were taking this corner very well and some very fast. Chris, after MTC, had been reseeded and he had more than made up the time his lost on day 1 and was making his way up the pack. We leave Stage 3 and head for MTC since Chris and Alex would be going there after Stage 4, and we didnt have time to get to Stage 4 and setup.

As were heading to MTC, we see a competitor on the side of the road and stop to ask if they needed help. They explained that they had differential lock up and the car couldnt move and asked if we had a radio. Unfortunately, neither Paul or I are HAM certified so we didnt and told them we would go to ATC for Stage 4 and have them contact their crew to come and get them. Unfortunately, that was the end of the rally for them since they couldnt make it to the next stage. We get to MTC and Will and George had already setup for service. The whole team gets a break and gets some food in them before the next stage. Paul and I head out to Stage 5 to get setup and find out that what I thought was a road leading to a really good high speed turn was actually a logging site and we were forced to go back to the spectator area to try and setup to film. We get to the spectator area and were about to get setup when we hear that the stage has been cancelled. *sigh* We get back and talk with the marshals and somehow a local found a way on to the stage and 0 car had just past him. They couldnt find where he came from or where he went, so for safety reasons they cancelled the stage. Well that pretty much ended the event for us as it was starting to get dark. So we head back to Salem and to the Eagles Club where the Rally Party was held. We ate and drank free Fat Tire until the awards presentation. Chris got 3rd in his class and was 11th overall. He has a nice plate for his efforts and he headed back to Rally HQ to load up the car and head back to the hotel. As we start to load up the car we see Steve Peret with his car in tow. On one of the stages, he drove through a water crossing sideways and flipped the Civic 4-5 times. Luckily he and his co-driver were just a little banged around but nothing serious. He takes a picture of the crew for us and we head back to the hotel.

We leave the hotel and get back into DFW around 9:30 PM and were all wiped out. Its been an exhausting, frustrating, exciting, and fantastic event. I cant wait to get to OR in April and see the Oregon Trail rally.

Excellent job guys! Congrats on a successful finish, and thanks for the great PR work for the sport. 100aw is a great rally, but Salem was a little odd. Nice to see the Mayor really getting involved. Last time I was there, about a dozen good ol' boys kept coming through the hotel parking lot reving engines, while we tried to work on the car. We figured the cars would be vandalized overnight, though nothing happened.
Keep it up.

Thursday's 61 degree sunny weather was a real tease. It was in the 50's Friday morning but quickly dropped to the low 40's. I'm just glad the wind died down by the time I worked my corner. Unfortunately, that was the canceled stage on TW, so I didn't get to see any exciting driving Friday.
Saturday's weather was much better. Though still only mid-40's, it was sunny and the wind was calm. In fact, I got downright warm standing out on Stage 3 waiting for the cars. But at least this time I got to see some real driving. My Subie is all dirty like it should be now. (It just doesn't seem right that a Subie would be clean after being at a rally.)
I heard that one of the competitor's had a wheel (or two) come off. Is that just a rumor?
Also, what I've heard is that the "0" car was pretty beat up by the end of the rally.  I heard at one point reverse was no longer functional.

on 100AW 6 i believe a ball joint broke on a competitors car, making one of the wheels useless. it was blocking the road and it took a while to move it, which caused the delay.
yeah, 0 was a little worse for the wear. but what do you expect from a bugeye :p

And I have redone the pictures page and removed the annoying watermark so people could get a better look at the cars.
I've also redone the master site so check out www.turboman.com.

The locals down there are idiots. On Saturday on Stage 3(I think) a local set a fire in the ditch next to the road before the stage began, then ran off after 000 went by. That's what delayed that stage for more than two hours. Great rally, dumb locals.

as Stage Captian on Stage 3 on Saturday, i can assure you there was no delay caused on that stage. the rally was already behind schedule, as they tend to do. i heard nothing on the net about a fire of any variety. if you stopped and talked to the locals, the vast majority are very happy with the rally, enjoy it, and want the course to come by their property. i know at the finish of 3 the land owner had been watching down a bit lower at a really wicked hairpin at his driveway and then came up the hill and chatted with me for a bit. nice guy. very excited to watch the cars. at HQ on Thursday, a gentleman strooled in dressed in full camo and was inquiring about the rally. i was explaining it to him and he just stopped me, saying he knew what was going on and that he loved watching WRC and was a big fan of Marcus Gronholm. Wearing my Solberg hat, i tried to convince him to support the current World Champion but he was adament that Solberg merely benefited from Gronholm's bad luck. these people aren't dumb. in the 3 years of going down there now, i can say that i've only had one issue with a local (threatened to shoot myself and the rally master). this was during route construction for 02. apparently nobody down there likes him. the only issue i've had during an event was with an out of state photographer, also in 02.

There are idiots everywhere. Stage 4 Friday where we were marshalling had to be transited because of a local going in to her house. I have never had a bad moment on this event. I went in 81, 82 and 83 as well as 02, 03 and 04. So that makes me an old fart.;)

If I understand correctly, there was a fire, but it was a forest manager (what's the official title?) that set it and it was supposedly under control. I forget the guy's name. It may well have gotten out of control (I hear it got up into the trees), but since I didn't see this, I'm going on hearsay. :p

To add a little detail, the stage was delayed (I guess it was because of this local), and it started to get dark. Not all the competitors had their vehicles set up for night, so they transited that stage (the service stop was right after it). At least that is how I understood it.

The locals down there are idiots. On Saturday on Stage 3(I think) a local set a fire in the ditch next to the road before the stage began, then ran off after 000 went by. That's what delayed that stage for more than two hours. Great rally, dumb locals.

It wasn't stage three, I believe it was the first spectator stage which I now realize was stage two. According to the radio there was in fact a fire in a ditch next to the road. 000 came back around and took some cops to the site. Stage 2 was delayed as it was supposed to have began at 1130 and didn't begin until at least 130.
I don't know, I met a marshal from Ellington who seemed pretty nice but when the locals are purposely setting fires in ditches and then running off, I'm not going to hold them in a high regard.

why would you slam everyone in 4 counties because one jackass lit a fire supposedly?
anyway, Brian is correct. Stage 4 friday was delayed because the ambulance was needed elsewhere. it was delayed to the point that it was dark and most competitors didn't have lights. they transited the stage for safety.

It really wasn't meant to be a blanket statement even though it sounded like it. But on the other hand, I saw some not so well thought out moves on the part of SOME of the locals. It sure as hell wasn't the out of towners that were the ones running marshal points, entering stages etc.

By the way, anybody who wants to get closer to the action and more informed on what is happening should get their ham radio license. Easy to do and fun to boot.

PS: Yesterday afternoon we had our first weather alert of the season to go out and watch for tornados here in Dallas. Talk about a rush!

That's a really good suggestion, Richard. I would have loved to have been able to listen in on all the radio chatter going on during the event. It would have been really helpful as well.

Thanks to everyone who came to the rally! I hope everyone can come back again next year.
Thanks Turboman93 for the rally account--good pics, too.
I hope everyone had a good time, despite the delays. I guess that's the price you pay for racing past so many houses. We'll try to better next year. The locals do get better every year, now that they are starting to understand what rallying is all about. I'll definitely be more organized next year now that I know what to expect.
If anyone has any comments or constructive criticism, feel free to pm or email me.
