All Racers: How many sets of rotors do you go through in 1 season

i ask this of all types...road racing, drag racing, autocrossing, rally, rallyx etc etc...
just trying to do some research.
thanks in advance.

I think it would be more beneficial if you separated each class of racing. Road racing and rally should use the most, then autox, and then drag racing. In drag racing you dont even really need to use the brakes all that much if they give you a long enough track.

Hello,
Does the person who responded with 10+ do downhill racing? Or do some sanctioning rules require you to run a way-too-small rotor for your car?

It also depends on the car.
I've changed front brake rotors twice and rear brake rotors once in the 4 years I've been tracking my car. But, it's a Miata, and you don't really use the brakes on it. Front pads are good for 3/4 season, rear pads are good for 1 1/2.

Auto-x? Less than 1 every other year... if that.

There isn't a 0 option so I can't really vote. Autocross with a few track days, on an '04 STi. 600+ AX runs and I don't see any point of changing rotors. That's about 20 seasons for people in the big regions.
"Brake lights are just a sign your car doesn't handle well enough."
Tip from the starter: "Don't use your brakes this time. They just slow you down."

Yeah, I thought that was a needed option, too, so I just chose 1.

Well, I think not using brakes simply means you're not going fast enough... tracks will often have room for STi's to get into the 120 mph range, or 140+ on tracks that have stretches that touch on high bank ovals. And often, after a 120+ mph section, there'll be a set of 2nd gear turns (specifically to slow the action down and let better brakers / better momentum cars compensate for less horsepower). If you want to enter a turn that's meant for 50 mph at 120+, be my guest, but let me know ahead of time, so I can pull my driver off the track...
:)

Most likely he never changes brake pads......ever.

1-2 sets of rotors using the Mountain Rotors including, 20k street driving in NYC, HP+ pads, and about 8-10 HPDEs. That's on my 94 Legacy turbo, running 4-pot RB or Subaru 4-pot front calipers.

Gee, the 2 people that polled with "a lot" didn't post here as their answers are full of crap
Joel, WRX_Mundi was talking about autox :)
We personally will not use more then 2 sets of OEM Cryod Brembo blanks in 12 SCCA Road Races.

Hello,
Tom, I know... but he said "Autocross with a few track days" - :) Better be using brakes on those few days. That said, I would imagine that good autocrossers are using the brakes constantly, but that autocross doesn't really use up brakes much?
A set of Stoptech fronts and OE rears (I think we had a set of cryod rears?) last at least a season for road racing...

Two years of AX'ing on my original Rotora drilled/slotted rotors ... Ultimate Axxis pads ... and I use my brakes hard ... two to four days of AX a month, year around.
| PKer | 11-22-2005 07:32 PM |
I only changed my rotors becuause I won a free set. So I put them on when I changed pads. I auto-x and daily drive my car a lot.

Lol. I think I just learned something, but I'll have to wait until next season to find out what it was.

This thread reminds me to swap out the HP+ pads now that winter is here for the HPS or Generic Ceramic pads for the winter. I am looking forward to getting the car ready to race, and then use it as my daily driver into manhattan! The parking garage guys are gonna love me. As it is the HP+ pads kill their ears when I pull in! "Esse, there is something wrong with your brakes man!"

For rally, you need to budget 6 rotors and 3 sets of pads / rally (2 front, 1 rear). Sometimes its MORE. Hardly ever less (unless no pushing). We used the same set off of Colorado for ALL of LSPR...
| WRX_Mundi | 11-23-2005 02:17 AM |
Sorry, the quotes were meant as jokes -- forgot the smileys. I just didn't think anyone would read them literally! Well, maybe the CSP Miata guys aren't entirely joking with the first one.
We would joke at that we could go through turn 1 at Spokane at 150mph. Once. (insert smiley). Obviously I used brakes at the track days, and I use them at autocrosses too. I don't LFB which is good and bad but likely means less overall brake wear. There have been posts from people who claim to have boiled their brake fluid at autocrosses, which to me means they're left foot braking way, way too much. Even with 10 back-to-back AX runs at a test and tune my brakes aren't that hot -- not like a track session with 100-130mph -> 40mph over and over again.
P.S. I'm on my third set of pads on the car, so I do do a little braking. But nothing like Pat! Rally is obviously different, and well, heck, I watch him on TV, not the other way around, so there's a lesson there. :D

I knew you were joking... I put a smiley in there, sheesh! :)
That said, holy crap, Pat! Over what kind of surfaces?

hmm, I cracked 2 rotors this year tracking the car... 3" brake ducts seemed to cure that problem.
| thechickencow | 11-23-2005 08:49 AM |
Well Pat's running at the top, and like he said, he ran LSPR on one set since he didn't have to push as hard. I'd guess most rally teams other than the top 5-10 or so don't switch rotors during a 2-day rally unless theres a problem with them.
I went through a set on my car in one race while using Hawk Blues, but when I switched back to R4E's I reduced the wear quite a bit and the rotors lasted longer.

the T2 national champion, used 1 set of rotors all year, i think how much you eat the rotors depends a lot on driving style.
| WJM | 11-25-2005 02:43 PM |
1 Full set of rotors in 25k miles.....TONS of autox, and several Dragon runs (almost like a track day each visit). So far I'm up to 10k miles on the current set...no signs of needing to change them.
