Black out silver part of '06 tail light part 1

Black out silver part of '06 tail light
So I've searched around a bit and still haven't found what I'm curious about. I just finished blacking out my headlights on my '06 WRX and and I was curious about blacking out the silver section in the tail lights also.

-Has anyone tried or have pics of an '06 WRX or STi with the silver part blacked out?

-Is the process the same as the headlights? (Heating in oven, etc...)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Can't be done. You're going to end up breaking the lights trying to separate them. It's in hundreds of threads, try searching under different key words. Your best bet is to go on ebay or your local tint shop and have them tinted.

If you bake them they melt...pure and simple. And NO, I didn't try it out...but SOMEONE on the forum did!
jmanrex 09-25-2006 09:52 AM

easiest but costly solution is to buy the jdm version which are black'd out
ChrisCJ99 09-25-2006 10:21 AM

What's the JDM version? And where could I find them?

YES what he said!!!
ommmjido 09-25-2006 12:31 PM

i dont think there is a JDM version
Bad Wagon 09-25-2006 01:42 PM

From what I have seen i npics they are the same color but eh JDMS have the red insert on the drivers side for their reverse. They are the same color internally.

Um, they look the same as the USDM ones to me.

Only the STI Limited has the chrome ones, I think.

WHOA! I never noticed that... or maybe I never noticed my taillights. I'm gonna have to take a closer look when I get home but I believe 06/07 have a silver backing. The Limiteds have completely chrome but the S204s.... those look like they are smoked just a little... damn I want them...
STiShawn 09-25-2006 02:20 PM

i've been noticing that as well, those ^ are different then my TR's
Nico Flax 09-25-2006 02:20 PM

Check out this link... its sort like the picture above but with a weird red cover over what I believe is the reserve light on the USDM cars... strange...

well, I mainly just wanted a black tail light so that it would have the same color scheme through out the car. Does any one know of any after market lights that are black? Maybe some black tail lights with LED's? I haven't seen any around anywhere.
viking pete 09-25-2006 02:54 PM

That darkness on the S204 is just the picture I'm pretty sure, in other pictures they look almost chrome.
STiShawn 09-25-2006 03:09 PM

afaik the only black out option are the blubatmobile ones

Thats what I did:

you can't get inside them without chemically seperating the lens from the housing. theoretically you could cut and then bond back together, but i have a good feeling 99% of nasioc users who would try that would shatter something or otherwise fail miserably.

the red insert is a rear fog light... and i think they're only on EDM and countries that require a rear fog light... i don't think JDM lights have the red insert over what is the USDM driver's side backup/reverse light. if anyone would like to show me a JDM car pictured to prove me wrong, i'd appreciate it.

hotsubarus.com and rockblocker make/are making the tint strips, a la bluebatmobile.
ThinkGlobal 09-25-2006 03:20 PM

trying to take them apart is going to end in disaster. if you want them smoked take a look at the hotsubarus.com or similar kits. the batmobile ones are cheap thin delicate knockoffs and not worth the time to try...
Nico Flax 09-25-2006 03:27 PM

I don't like the tinted ones, I suppose either I do this myself or stop complaining... perhaps I will try if I find some cheap tail lights.

What are these batmobile ones though? I'm just curious to see what they look like.
jmanrex 09-25-2006 03:31 PM

the s204 black chrome is what i was talking about--because like stated above the only difference between ours and jdm's are the backup light in the drivers side
ThinkGlobal 09-25-2006 03:31 PM

dont waste your time they are tissue paper thin vinyl rubbish

WOW it actually worked... wonder what long time effects there is on the tail lights. I think it would look better if you pick different colors and different sections to paint. Perhaps leave the stand that holds the turn and reserve reflector alone but paint the rest a sublte gray or black.
Big-E 09-25-2006 08:25 PM

Those are nice taillights, slightly dark grey.

Since I don't read Japanese I had a hard time accessing the website.

To answer though, the rest of the world where it is law the red lens in place of the back-up light is a rear fog lamp. This is required in Europe, Australia and South Africa. Anywhere else, I do not know.

My 2006 WRX taillamps are silver/grey. The Limited is chrome and I will now have to take a ride to the dealer and check out a couple of other models (e.g. 2.5i and STI).

Interesting though, what is an S204 and notice that the car has a rear wiper.

See ya.
viking pete 09-25-2006 08:30 PM

I checked my car on my way out and I'm confident there is no difference in the color of the tailight housing between US cars and Japanese cars.

The S204 is the most baddassest Impreza that Subaru sells in Japan. (Could argue that the USDM 2.5 is better than the 2.0 thats in the S204) And I think all Japanese Imprezas have a rear wiper.
Handsdown 09-25-2006 09:54 PM

the s204 does have a stunning amount of increased 'badass' qualifications, but...

you'd have to be a ****ing moron to argue that.

the USDM's 2.5L STI block may have more potential simply because of displacement, but stock for stock, from a track performance standpoint, you'd have to be absolutely braindead.
Based on the Japanese domestic-model STi, the S204 is powered by the EJ20 2.0 litre flat four. Modifications include a blueprinting job, with new pistons, a new crankshaft, and new intake and exhaust manifolds along with a larger turbo.

After reprogramming the ECU to tap the potential of these additions, the EJ20 spits out 235kW at 6400rpm, and an impressive 433Nm at 4400rpm.
is the USDM 2.5L blueprinted? does it have a full STI catalogue of internals? is the ECU optimized for performance from the same people that blueprinted the block? no.

and all JDM imprezas have a rear wiper because it's required- we get hosed because apparently it's not important to see behind you in the rain, where most fatal rear-end accidents occur.
viking pete 09-25-2006 09:57 PM

^I wouldn't argue it.

glad we cleared that up then:p
