busted my seat! part 1

e30brettm3 08-10-2006 08:25 PM

busted my seat!
so, I was driving my 02 WRX out of my parking lot at work and "TWANG!" says my seat. I pulled over and thought "I'm glad this car has a zipper on the back of the seat so i can see what happened" I had previously thought it was dumb that there was a zipper back there. I unzip my seat and sure enough, one of the 4 or 5 springs had unsprung. "Okay, I'll just stick that baby back in..." i think to myself, as I glance over to where the spring attaches to the seat frame I see what I did not want to see, a broken metal connector. The piece that holds the spring on the frame of the chair had snapped! So now i have no idea what to do. I can still use the seat, but i doubt it's good for it. Is there someway to fix this? or do i have to buy a replacement seat? or should i upgrade to a racing seat? what do you all think?

thanks

how did that happen?

sry tho
e30brettm3 08-10-2006 08:36 PM

honestly I have no idea. I was just sitting in it and BANG it broke off. :( I got the car in April, so maybe the previous owner liked to punch the seat back or something. ha. I have no idea why it happened. sad though. :(

Sorry for you, that sucks!! Sounds like a reason to get some Recaro's.

It's still a seat, right? What's changed with the broken spring, is it just a bit softer, or is it a safety issue? Can't you hook the spring to somewhere else on the frame? Drill another mounting hole?

Maybe your car is telling you something.Like..............................LOSE SOME WEIGHT! :furious:

J/K :D
Time for an upgrade
kaspur_eh 08-10-2006 09:01 PM

just upgrade to a corbeau seat or something mid range
e30brettm3 08-10-2006 09:14 PM

the seatback just doesn't have quite as much lumbar support. it doesn't actually feel bad at all, i'm just afraid of breaking more! and i'm only 5'11 150lbs, but i'll try to scrawny up a bit more for my car's sake ;)
NismoSkylineGTR 08-10-2006 10:00 PM

boy you are 2 fat LOL j/k
homer227 08-10-2006 10:40 PM

Time for some version 8s!
Donzo 08-10-2006 10:42 PM

I have some Corbeau seats for sale if you're interested. ;)
hadboosttroy 08-11-2006 01:44 AM

I'm not joking, try jb-welding the spring, it could work :)

You have nothing to lose but a little time and a few bucks
e30brettm3 08-11-2006 02:01 AM

that is true...hmmm...yeah, I'll give it a shot.

I don't think i would, but i saw some 06 TR interiors in the for sale forums, they look kinda nice, grey and black, are they no good? uncomfortable? unsupportive? just curious.
subarulz! 08-11-2006 02:17 AM

I'm 5'11" and about 310 and always worry about this happening. Especially when I push back to get my wallet at the gas station. But 98000mi and still hasen't happened. fingers crossed.(easies than exercising)
Farnk 08-11-2006 03:06 AM

Same thing happened to me in my 02, heard a pop while driving and i kinda fell into my seat like an inch. Everythings loose back there, i still use it tho.
Kean 08-11-2006 09:51 AM

e30,

Try looking through the classified forums. I perodically see 02/03 seats being sold at very reasonable prices and some are in immaculate condition.
Donzo 08-11-2006 11:13 AM

I have my TR interior up for sale. Nothing negative about them except for they don't have a fixed head rest. That's the only complaint I've heard. I think they're very comfortable, I drove two hours a day for a semester and not once was it uncomfortable. I have someone offering $450 for the full interior except carpet. I'll let you know if the deal falls through.

the JDM STi v7 or v8 seats are absolutely beautiful.. but since your car is yellow they wont match. Therefore, get the BLACK STi Spec-C seats!!! aaaaah

The same thing happend to me. I used a hoes clamp to fit it. It my be a little getto, but it would be too much work to weld it, and no way jb-weld would work, plus you'll never see it.

i've never done the jb weld, just thought it might work. I've known people who have fixed holes in transmissions with it, so I thought it might be up to the task of a seat spring :)

what makes you think it won't? I figure, clean the surface, jb weld it up, use a heat gun and a clamp maybe?
Donzo 08-11-2006 02:48 PM

JB weld could work. I used it one time to hold a spring on my KX80 back in high school. It popped off a couple of times but think about all the heat a dirtbike exhaust produces and not to mention the vibrations/crashing also lol
pillowball 08-11-2006 05:41 PM

Hey man, I have an 02 and the same exact thing happened to me last winter as I was leaving a ski resort. The broken piece was in the upper lumbar region, so I kept feeling like I was slouching when I drove. I'm only 180 pounds, so was pretty pissed. Anyway, I have the extended warranty (the one time I've been glad to have it), so I took it to the dealer and they replaced the entire seatback structure. Doesn't sound like you have the extended warranty, but you may want to try the dealership and make the point that the seat breaking on a 4-year-old car is a safety issue. They might take pity on you.

Otherwise, just keep an eye out on the For Sale thread. Our seats come up fairly regularly. Good luck.
DaFastOne 08-11-2006 06:54 PM

instead of welding the clip back on you can use a snake clamp. This way the seat wont catch on fire by accident. i had that happend t me also, i thoguth i broke my back at first.
e30brettm3 08-12-2006 01:13 AM

hmmmmm. all very good ideas! thanks guys, I was beginning to thing that I was the only person that this had ever happened to.
hybrid gti 2 08-12-2006 02:59 AM

I thought this was going to be some kind of broke back mountain thread.

I realize this thread is ancient, but I feel like all the old seats fail like this. Anyone else with this same problem? Anyone have a great fix for it?
