Carbon Fiber part 1

Wayne_Coots 09-27-2004 09:13 PM

Carbon Fiber
I need to know if anyone makes a cf hood that will fit a GC8 STi and function properly. As in use the factory air spliter and intercooler seal. I want one that is comperable to the aluminum for weight, but one the will fit the factory scoop and vents.

bump Please?

OOPS, that's a scoop, not a hood.

VIS makes a hood, dont know if it's compliant with the STI gear though.
dmatthew 09-27-2004 11:38 PM

Isn't the aluminum STI hood lighter than the carbon fiber?

I doubt it, aluminum is light, but carbon fiber is light as fsck. Carbon will save a couple pounds over aluminum, and either will save several pounds over stock.
projectrally 09-28-2004 02:10 AM

Actually, the weight savings between the aluminum and CF is negligible. But aluminum makes a better heat sink than CF, and is much more durable than CF. That's why I think it's silly when Evo and STi owners get CF hoods. It's only advantage is cosmetic.
Wayne_Coots 09-28-2004 05:01 AM

Well I have allways been told that aluminum gets dented easily, so I was looking for somthing more durable.

Well this should be perfect then, because I thought I read somewhere that carbon fiber is indestructable.

unless your being sarcastic....(insert random flame here)

It's not indestructable, but it is stronger than aluminum. It'll also flex (rubber band) instead of bending (sheet of aluminum).

indestructible?...c'mon now. we all know it hard to damage.

DAMMIT! Hard to damage is what I meant!

I PWN3D myself. :o
Wayne_Coots 09-28-2004 04:51 PM

But does any one know if it will work with the factory intercooler hardware?
Wayne_Coots 09-28-2004 05:01 PM

Bump
Timdog82001 09-29-2004 04:27 AM

just email a couple of companies like vis and seibon and so forth and just ask them
Wayne_Coots 09-29-2004 06:36 AM

I just found out Last night that Fiber Images makes a GC8 Hood the will work with my swap. It seems to be a very good build quality.

yeah I hate my aluminum hood. It has like a million little dings. If I look at it it gets dinged. Yes, I must be that ugly :D Mikal
Wayne_Coots 09-29-2004 08:46 AM

LOL! I think that if Petter Solberg's car had a CF hood instead of the aluminum he wouldn't have had so much trouble with the water passes on that rally. Did you see how bad the water damaged his hood! It forced him to retire from the rally

Sorry my bad. When i searched for carbon fiber cusco hood on yahoo this came up. Sorry. Also i just read this: This hood does not include a scoop, pins, or hood vents

DOH.
Wayne_Coots 09-29-2004 04:28 PM

thanks

Cusco hood. Not sure if this will help.[/QUOTE]

Wayne_Coots 09-29-2004 04:53 PM

It's not, it said that they were imported from Tiawan.
darknightohio 09-29-2004 05:34 PM

Try contacting Seibon.

blue foglight covers? come on... that's the worst idea i've ever heard.
projectrally 09-30-2004 03:01 AM

The aluminum hood dents a lot more. The CF hoods (especially the cheap ones) tend to crack around the hood pins and the arms that they mount to. They also pit and flake instead of denting. The good CF hoods are probably the best choice, but they're also really damned expensive. Of course, you'll have to paint the aluminum hood, so they'll weigh in at roughly the same price. That is, provided you're not going to paint your CF hood. But if you're going to paint it, you'd better have a big wallet.
Wayne_Coots 09-30-2004 07:53 AM

Not for flat black spray cans!
ghostfoot7 09-30-2004 07:46 PM

Other than just being esthetically pleasing (if you're into it), I really can't see carbon fibre making that much of a weight difference.... If you think it's gonna make your car faster by dropping 3 lbs, I suggest hitting a gym ya pudgy bastard!
Ahzlon 10-01-2004 01:18 AM

well.. the CF hood is far lighter then the stock RS hood... might take of some for rally or auto x stuff.. but idk... but yah.. i should have read that post a lil more earlier... or else it was just a bad brain fart thinkin a hood = a scoop... sigh... on with life
.RYAN 10-01-2004 03:20 AM

Most "Carbon Fiber Hoods" are fiberglass with CF overlay anyways. Vis scoop is oem sized.

First of all you should shut your mouth and pay a little more att. to what has been said in the thread before you deside to post. If you look to the left under my name you will see were it says 93 Impreza. This hood weighs more like 36-38 pounds, and putting on a CF will drop that to 15 pounds. Second of all I serve this great nation in the U.S. ARMY so don't even start by telling me to go to the gym. I stand 6 foot 4 inches and weigh 210. I do PT more than you, ya pudgy BASTARD! Besides if you had read the post you would know that I want the CF because it is tougher than the aluminum.

I've got their carbon/kevlar hood on my WRX wagon and I'm quite happy with it.
There's no fiberglass involved in the construction whatsoever.
