Finally got The Defi mounted :)

After many hours of pulling half the dash out i finally got my gauge mounted were the vent used to be. Id never do it again, never knew pulling a dash was such a PITA esp when you have to install it again too. Anyway there she is all stealthy:)

Wow, im attempting this on tuesday when I get my defi boost.
Nice fit, but I dont plan to take off the dash, why did you feel the need to?
Any other way of doing it?
How did you mount it?

i removed it because there are 4 screws on the other side of the vent faceing the front of the car and with the hvac plumbing its pretty much impossible to get to all of them.

where you at in MI
| essteaeye | 01-07-2006 11:57 PM |
What if I broke it off the vent? I dont want to take apart my dash, no way..
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 12:00 AM |
I tired that, good luck, theres 4 screws and the tube for the hvac, not east to brake off with all that accached. Im located in Royal Oak.

What i did was pretty much remove every screw on the dash, take off all the screws on the air-bag, and then u can pull the dash back enough to get to the screws on the vent, its a pita but the only way i could get it done.
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 12:03 AM |
What is holding the gauge in place though?
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 12:16 AM |
automotive molding double-sided tape
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 12:22 AM |
Around what though, the front portion of the defi gauge? Like the "silver brim" ??
So you think its NOT possible to break the vent off, and just install the gauge?

I dont think so, believe me i tried, i didnt want to pull the dash either. Yes if you look close its the silver tape between the trim and the gauge, heres another :)

Yes I noticed the tape... Hmm I cant justify pulling out the dash, but that guage location is awesome...
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 12:38 AM |
Just do it, its not THAT bad, save money over a pod:)

SO did you remove the whole dash? Im going to attempt to remove the dash soon but can't find any instructions on doing so. I just know that there are a crap load of screw/clips/ etc. Im scared to attempt.
| wrxzboost | 01-08-2006 12:44 AM |
have you considered painting the silver trim around the gauge black?
looks clean

Mine dosnt rattle any more than before.. I didnt remove it completly meaning un-clip all the wires attached to it and what not but i removed all the screws, pulled it out far enough to get access to the back of the vent, removed it and replaced all the screws/bolts/clips haha.
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 12:59 AM |
oh okay, i thought you actually took out the whole dash. Did you remove your steering wheel + air bag? Gauge cluster?
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 01:02 AM |
gauge cluster and air bag
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 01:02 AM |
****...........no fun
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 01:07 AM |
nope, but look at it, well worth it:)
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 01:12 AM |
So why would you have to take off the airbag but not the steering wheel?
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 01:13 AM |
because the steering wheel is not attached to the dash, and the airbag is..
| essteaeye | 01-08-2006 01:29 AM |
but the airbag is connected to the steering wheel, no?
| Impr3zy0u | 01-08-2006 01:39 AM |
passanger air-bag...

I popped out the silver trim ring and I think I can do it w/o taking the dash off.
Did you mount the defi gauge inside the A/C tube? Or did you cut that out? Im curious to now how you got that heavy gauge to stay put ;)
That trim ring doesnt seem all that wide, atleats to me, so please elaborate :)

Defi gauges are pretty small so it dosnt even come close to hitting the heating tube. The ring holds it just fine. Even if you can brake it loose its too big to pull through the hole, maybe you can drop it out the battom, who knows. I dont see how thats possible becaus theres a hvac tube on the back of it. LMK tho, ill be pissed if there is another way besides yanking the dash. :alien:
| essteaeye | 01-09-2006 08:06 AM |
Well my A/C tube goes right to the trim ring, to the very end...
Seems like the ring only have about 1/4-1/2 inch of mounting space. I will try to figure something out :)

Also looks like the gauge JUSTTTT fit, nice and snug...
Did you remove the hvac piping behind where the cent used to be?

The gauge and the location look sweet! I have been wanting to put 3 of the gauges in the pod but is really expensive. Nice job on the install.
| WikdRX | 01-10-2006 12:29 AM |
ive always wanted to mount a gauge in there, but i can justify losing an air vent. It gets too hot here in texas
| BOOST3DWRX | 01-10-2006 01:18 AM |
That is HOT nice work
