Foul smell removal.How? part 1

Foul smell removal.How?
I bought a 94 Impreza Brighton that I am currently doing a motor swap on.

Anyway the car had been sitting for about four years and had quite the rodent infestation which led to mold etc...... I am throwing away everything but the dash and roof liner as well as the plastic bits that could be cleaned. Anyway th car is completely gutted and has been cleaned with simple green about three times. All the mold is dead, but I cannot get rid of the smell. I need a permanent fix for the smell, any suggestions for industrial strength cleaners?

I would search but the damned search is borked

Cheers

Ben.

the smell is probably from the foam in the dash.

If nothing Billy has to offer works, douse the car in gas. Gas will smell better than anything else.

Or brake cleaner, or carb/choke cleaner.

Dash is out of the car, There is literally nothing in there, no pedals, no wires, no nuts/bolts etc.Only paint inside.

Seriously. Just take out the headliner and re-finish it. A fabric store will sell a headliner type fabric with a 1/4 foam back on it that with contact cement will work real nice.

Yeah, its probably coming from the dash too.

I might suggest parking the car in a Spray-Bake oven and spraying the interior down with some etch and baking that MoFo and seeing if that works. Could you use the body shop at your work?
Hondaslayer 07-13-2004 11:25 PM

I could use the body shop, but the problem is getting the car there.

Not sure on the short-term ability of these things, but you could always just keep one under the seat... ? Hey, it's better than smelling like crap, right?
Red04WRX 07-13-2004 11:41 PM

or give this stuff a try

subiekid 07-13-2004 11:51 PM

I had a problem along those lines but I had the interiour from another car that I was able to swap in. THe only thing I was not able to swap was the carpet, I used a carpt cleaner on it. Maybe you could use a carpet cleaner on the headliner?
guzzettaman 07-14-2004 02:36 AM

spray lysol/lisol (however its spelled) to kill the bacteria. I spilled rotten milk in my trunk and lisolled everything and then went over it with warm soapy water to get rid of the smell. i also let the car air out for a day.

try some pandanus leaves? ^^

Is anybody else scared by the look of that dood's thumb?

Anyways, did you try Fabreeze? They claim they can remove odors with just a simple spray!
y0gfx 07-14-2004 04:32 PM

Baking soda. Just like in your refrigerator.
purplegrape 07-14-2004 04:35 PM

Fabreeze doesn't work too well... @ least in my car

The absolute best stuff is this, its called OZIUM you can pick it up at autozone and some hardware stores.

Looks like:

Jejunum 07-15-2004 10:22 PM

too add. also throw several boxes of baking soda all over the car, anywhere possible. let sit for a day then vacuum it up.

baking soda absorbs lots of organics very well..

also i read this

Caution: While damp baking soda works really well for many odors, damp baking soda can also get stuck onto the carpet fibers and be difficult to clean. If you live in a very humid climate you might substitute a light spray of white distilled vinegar for the baking soda.

With the ozium it works alot better if you turn on your car, turn on the outside draw air at full blast and spray it in the ouside air intake, (its those little holes in the black plastic below your wipers) it will suck the spray in thru the air vents and spread it through your car. Repeat 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor.
Subahaulic 07-19-2004 06:20 PM

Ozium is a cover-up scent that smells like soap. What will really work is a complete spray-down w/ PANZYME! This is sold by veterinarians and used to stop/remove kennel and other pet-mess odors by enzymatically breaking down the culprit molecules.
Subie Gal 07-19-2004 06:28 PM

replace the headliner, that will help loads
you'll never get the smell out of it... :(
ebeck 07-19-2004 07:38 PM

Ozium is a spray which is a poor alternative to an actual ozone machine. It is used to repair smoke damage. Perhaps you can rent one. Febreze blows. The odor has to be from something porous. If there is nothing left but paint...

Not everyone can get their hands on on azone machine, so I was offering a first try alternative. Best try that first before dishing out on a rent....
Dave_MacKinnon 07-20-2004 01:37 PM

My Probe GT got skinky after a few months of going to the Gym and not showering before I drove home. A friend of mine built himself an ozonizer machine. he train it in the car for an hour one afternoon and it was SO awesome. Worth the effort of trying to find one... I haven't found the kit or one like it though... I'm going to keep looking..
