HID retro fit in MY02 wrx

yay finally done after 3/4 days of cutting, measuring, gluing, baking, and just alot of work. My HID's are in here they are, I used Acura TL projectors w/ bulbs and ballasts out of a bmw x5, one bulb is an osram and the other is a TL so the color is alittle off but I will buy new bulbs in due time.

Im taking the upclose tonight when I aim them, The procedure was really long lol
Like I said I used TL projectors with X5 lights.
1. I basically take off lenses with a heat gun
2. remove reflectors
3. make a template for screw holes on the projector
4. mark off the projectors on where to drill, then go ahead and drill
(note that I measured about 897489234 times just to get it right cuz if you
dont get rotation right you are screwed
5.black out housing so light doesnt shoot up in every direction
6. mount them with lonnnng bolts and double up the nuts against eachother so they dont move, put nuts on the end of screws outside back of reflector and double them up again, I put jb weld on it so it wont move.
7. mount projectors and make a shroud or anything to cover up messy work, reseal add silicone gel to the outside
okay making a retro is WAY more than 7 steps, It took me hours and hours of work, but im happy
go to HID planet and look at the HID university thread and theres
a write up with more thorough threads
bi xenon is excellent I can use both flash to pass and high beams
I used a lamp shade form IKEA 15 buuucks :) plus the TL bezel, It looks crappy the top comes cut off and the bottom, I couldnt do anything about that but meh you can only notice from really close.

You say those are the projectors(lights??) out of an acura tl, and the shrouds out of an X5??? How much did this cost? Where did you get the parts? Is it hard to do or just time consuming? Do they have high and low beams? Thanks.
| garie | 08-12-2005 04:31 AM |
really nice job man. are you able to still aim your headlights? adjust them?
| Thingfish | 08-12-2005 04:58 AM |
SICK ! Bout time somebody did it right. Good job, looks very good, and nice pattern to boot.
| Hank3 | 08-12-2005 09:25 AM |
Kudos to doing retro job properly. They look really nice :)
Like drrice mentioned before, all of the information you need to do this is on the hid forums:

I'm a regular over there too and it's amazing what some of those guys are doing with their lights

looks great... your beam pattern looks much better than the bmw projectors that i used on my old civic... just a quick question, did something happen to your projectors or did they come like that on the top and bottom of the lens?
| drrice | 08-12-2005 01:54 PM |
[QUOTE=pignoseWRX]did something happen to your projectors or did they

no thats the shroud, I used a lamp cover to cover up the projector so it
looked alittle cleaner, I had to hack away the middle so it would fit, the
bezels just dont cover up the top and bottom becuase they are out of the TL.

projectors are the bubbles you see, Its just a glass lense and housing for the
bulb, A thing called a ballast ignites the xenon bulb inside the projector(some
HID setups have igniters seperate from ballasts) the HID bulbs them selves
and ballasts came out of an X5. The projhectors alone(the lenses and part
that houses the bulbs) costed me 380 for a pair of drivers side :o.
I got the bulbs and ballasts for free because my uncle was trading in his X5 to carmax and it just so happens that the plug for the ballasts is a 9003 plug and the shop I work at has the fake HID lights that claim you get the same output. I just swapped those and ziptied the bulbs into the X5
I got the projectors from a guy on the same forum that Hank3 mentioned.
It's not that hard just measure alot so you dont screw your self, Its just time
consuming. Yes I have highbeams and low beams, having high beam xenon
(also known as bi-xenon) is more expensive in terms of setups. That is the
reason why my projectors cost so much. E55's are a popular setup and E46 bi
xenon, One of the hardest part is setting up the bi-xenon to work on flash
to pass and highbeams. I work at a 12 volt shop so I had experianced people
on hand :D . Just do your research and dont rush it or you will mess one
thing up.

Yes I still utilize the stock aiming points, You just mount into the reflector.

drrice, thanks for posting, and kudos to you for having the guts to do this surgery! I've been contemplating doing a similar bixenon install on my truck but the biggest thing I'm concerned about is how to properly mount the projector to the housing so that it is very secure and doesn't wobble when you drive over traintracks, etc.
Do you have any pictures of the back of the housing, maybe during the installation phase showing the bolts and JB weld?

Would bi xenon projectors, bulbs, and ballasts off of an 05 dodge viper work as a retro kit? It has all of the wiring as well. They are 70mm.

Nice going! There are only a few (bugeye retros)

they should be just fine theres alot of room to work with in bugeyes. the TL projectors i believe over 80 mms.

i have to ask... were these cheaper than HID morettes? because they just look off to me for some reason. even when they're done right, like here and like dmross's.

Looks good! But, does anyone else feel like "Hello" should be written across the top of that front pic?
| drrice | 08-13-2005 08:07 AM |
thannnkkssss people. I dont know how much morettes cost but including what I paid ofr the lampshades, and backup stock headlight housings, I spent about $450. my whole family has HID's except me so I sorta felt left out. dads bmw x5 and sisters e46 3 series, then mothers mercedes E class. I should have posted the picture with the highbeam on but once you have bi xenon you dont go back... I did not know how light output could get me really excited when I am driving GO DO ITTTTTTTTTTTT
| Hank3 | 08-13-2005 05:28 PM |
Whoa...sounds like your family is well off :)
| Genner | 09-14-2005 03:13 PM |
are the pics still working for you guys?

Nope...

Has anyone ever modded into an EDM STI headlight and installed one of these Hella, Valeo or Bosch projectors into them? Couldn't seem to find anything about it on hidplanet regarding the EDMs.
