how do i clean the engine?
can i use a hose? I want to rinse all the grit and grime of 22,000 miles out of my engine bay.
| hpracingwrx | 05-12-2002 12:31 PM |
yea i dont think a hose alone will work. ur also going to have to spray ur engine down with some kind of degreaser. dont spray the intake or the alternator, i would suggest super clean or simple green. just spray and let sit for a while then rinse with hose

Take it to a car wash that has engine cleaner. It does exist :) Although we only have one in our town. Spray it down with engine cleaner, I really think its watered down degreaser. Turn to rinse and whala. Clean engine :) This is what I do at least.

yeah that's what I'm worried about... is it okay to just spray away from it?

I posted this question earlier, look here
Basically i used Green stuff degreaser (found in any local auto supply store) and covered my alternator with a plastic baggie and hosed down my engine bay, simple!

I have cleaned my motor once a week since my car was new with what I was saying. Never had a problem yet. I dont like spry directly towards the alternator anyways. With the engine degreaser at the local car wash it works like a charm. comes right off, I probly spray the motor for 20 sec tops.

are you kidding? you haven't cleaned it in 22k miles? that's bad. i would recommend that everone give it a good clean every few thousand miles at least. use foaming engine cleaner to help remove any old grease or whatever. it should clean up pretty nicely.
| nhluhr | 05-12-2002 03:35 PM |
heh ok so plastic over the alternator (and i'll cover the battery to be safe) and then just use Simple Green and a hose huh?
| thermite | 05-12-2002 07:19 PM |
let the battery get wet, wont do a thing. Actually itll clean it. They are sealed and your not going to short anything out.

Why?
Please explain. My engine is dirty as all get out, and I like it that way. Never been cleaned in 8 years.

Yeah I'm with you, I like to keep mine clean. Though it isn't right now... Haven't cleaned mine yet (and I'm approaching 50k miles).
But I always kept my old cars' engines clean(er).
Dirt and grime usually don't affect anything, no, but if you ever need to have your engine worked on--by yourself or someone else--they always appreciate not having to get around all the dirt.

3 reasons:
1) when working on your car you get more light in the engine bay (reflections).
2) when working on your car small parts (bolts, nuts, clips, etc) aren't hidden within layers of grease.
3) when working on your car you don't get as much grease all over yourself.
I'm so weird that I even clean under the the lower lips of the body panels where no one can see ;)

update
i hosed it down with that STP foaming engine degreaser and then did some Simple Green Automotive spray as well... hosed it off and it looks much cleaner now. I used tin foil to cover the alternator. No problems from the water. I even hosed the MAF and it's fine.
thanks for the tips!

Pardon my asking, but how does one cover the alternator? It is the big piece just aft of the radiator and the pulleys right? Can anyone show me a diagram? Thanks.

ahh I don't know what those guys are talkin about alternator... yea yea every car wash I use Castrol super clean... spray it on make sure that the engine is cool and rise off... I don't even wait because its so strong and I do it so frequently there's no need... and water on electical parts... yea whatever... I do however let it dry up before I start my baby up... on the other hand I did the same thing to my friends car and it just took longer to dry up... if its well or if anything electrical that starts the engine it wont... but then again think about when they go rally throught the amazon or where ever... it gets mad wet and dirty....

You can also use the tire, wheel cleanner at the car wash, alls it is is a degreaser, then rense.
| juztin180 | 05-15-2002 08:05 PM |
I used to use Simple Green on my eclipse.
It always looked decent for shows and stuff (yeah, I used to be a ricer  )
Rinse it all out, even the battery (not the alternator though) and then spray it down with some tire foam. Although, I'm not sure how well this will work on the WRX, as it has the hood scoop. Its amazing how much dirt and crap that funnels into the engine bay
