How do you remove the STI wing?

What is the proceedure and or best way to do this? Also how much does this cost to do.. Thanks.
| conker69 | 05-12-2005 10:04 AM |
Hacksaw. Chainsaw. Sledgehammer. Tie a tow strap to it and a fire hydrant and on 3 hit the gas and yank it off.

Just open your trunk, and there will be bolts in the top of the trunk, you unscrew them, and... then the wing will come off. But ur gonna need to get molding, or body filler to fill in the holes, not inless you want them.

Find someone to swap trunks with (and the torsion springs)
| spacenut999 | 05-12-2005 10:16 AM |
It doesn't cost anything if you do it yourself :p What are you trying to accomplish? Remove it and leave it off, swap it for another, etc.
I think the STi wing has 12 bolts and 4 clips, plus disconnecting the 3rd brakelight connector.

Best thing to do is just trade with someone. But it's easy enough to take off the wing if you want to get rid of it immediately ... there are like 16 screws or something. Just open up the trunk and start unscrewing. Don't forget the ones underneath the rubber stoppers.

Yeah, somewhere on here is a thread that says you leave 14 open holes in your trunk lid if you remove the STi wing.
If you swap trunks with someone, it's super easy. You remove 4 bolts from the trunk lid support arms (2 bolts each side) and disconnect the center brake light connector.
Don't forget to swap trunk locks with the other person. This took me about 10 minutes to do, with no idea what I was doing, and working in my dim garage.
If you are like me, you may find there are many people who say it's easy to find someone to trade trunks with, but that wasn't my experience. I ended up buying a used '03 WRX lid and spoiler at a reasonable price and putting it on myself.
Despite several advertisements and lots of interest, I've yet to have anyone buy my STi trunk lid and wing at less than half OEM cost plus shipping. Seems to be far more STi owners wanting WRX spoilers than there are WRX owners who want STi wings.

12 screws, 17 holes.............Man, it looks bad!
Just need a 10mm deep socket, unscrew all nuts, unclip the third brake light connector and lift. Take out the four blue retainers and you have a decklid full of holes! ;)
A fabricator is designing a lip spoiler for my car and needed the factory spoiler removed. If that was not the case, I would of left the spoiler on till the new, "no holes" decklid comes in this Monday.

There are people that want them...they're just not going to pay you for it (well, not anything close to 1/2 oem price  ). If you don't want yours and they don't want theirs...its doesn't make sense that they'd pay you so much...plenty of trades for Sti wing plus like 50-100 bucks.

Yeah....I tried the trade +$50-$100 buck for months with no takers.
I finally just gave up and a vendor on here had a fantastic deal on a used trunk/spoiler that was well worth it to me.
If you check, the OEM price for a WRX lid + spoiler is pretty much about half price for OEM STi wing/trunk + $100. So I figure I'm in the ballpark.

I don't think anyone is saying don't offer the wing....we're just saying we'd like the option!
I know I'd rather have the $500+ that SOA charges for the wing...that'd almost pay for an AccessPort!

I agree, it look too much like rice with it. Today my sister and I went hiking, and there was an STI (with the stock "shelf" wing) I point to it and say: that's a really nice car. She turnes around and says: yeah, it is, expect the kid put that ugly wing on it. I told her: no, they come like that, it's not an option. She looked at me like I was kidding. I just found it funny that my sis (who knows nothing about cars) totally trashed it, I can just imagine all the people who see that wing and a riced out Honda Civic pops into their mind.

I didn't even like the WRX wing. I finally got tired of looking for wingless trunks that I took it off and filled the holes with hole plugs from the hardware store. For now, I'll just paint the plugs, but eventually I'll get the holes filled and the trunk repainted. Maybe when I do 04 taillights...
I don't like the Sti wing either. Looks so much cleaner wingless.

I can't believe you have 17 holes. I thought the 5 holes for the WRX wing were excessive. I'm going to paint the caps for now until I finally get the trunk resprayed.

I did the same thing with my WRX wing. now the only problem is the trunk FLIES open haha. you can buy color-matched plugs from the dealer. a friend said he had color matched plugs on his sti. what kind and where did you get those plugs? looks like you can just use touch up paint for it.

I took a bunch of mixing and matching at the hardware store. I'm going to have my paint guy just do a quick spray on the caps. I didn't realize dealers have them as well. wonder how those look.
I'm solving my trunk flying open issue by dynamatting the inside of it. I just installed a new sub and realized the trunk rattles like crazy. Those cars look clean!
