How to do your own Blue or Red Lights Free!
O.K. This mod is officially PROVEN.
I'am no longer the only person who has done this simple mod for almost nothing. The other night someone on the I-club witnessed MY blue light mod, and change his to blue also with-in minutes (and as day go by there will be more people with the mod). His look better than mine too :P . we'll have Pics soon.
This tread will be a information sharing thead only please. With one goal.... Changing you own light for FREE in 15mins.
For thoes who would say,
"...ahhh, can't do it unless I pay about 15 bucks.",
"..someone said that purple can't change green to blue, you full of it." ,
"... your way will mess up the needle cuz the 1st time someone meesed up his."
Well...please don't post the above here and keep reading. Here are the facts and technical details [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/cool.gif[/img]
I will grab some of the previouse info I've posted on other post an put all to gether here.
note: If you have some alternate ideas or additions to add feel free to add them. If you have comments like, "that's wrong" & "It can't work" please correct us by including or SHOWING us proof that it doesn't via physic laws, numbers, figures, pics, blah, blah, blah.

What key things are needed
1.Drk Purple (or Red sheet to make drk red gauges) thin sheet of velem or gel. Gel being the best(it's the stuff sheet film they use to change those hot stage lights to different colors) The sheet should be less than 1/4 the thickness of a credit card & let plenty of colored light through.
2. A template to cut the sheet out like this free one...
for a Full scale file type this in a new browser window(http://reiff.freeservers.com/_private/Blueprint_A.jpg) I labored to created the file so later i might charge like $2 - $3 for it [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img]
3.Cut your sheet out like these...
4. A med size philips head screwdriver to remove 3 screws in the dash get to the instument panel.
Alternat ways to change your light blue.
these have not been full explored but I and other are sure it works. And if anyone what to be front runner for it ..go for it [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]
1. Change the instument bulbs with Drk Purple bulbs. 4 bulbs, 2 sizes in all. (will edit this post to list the sizes)
2. Colored Plastic/rubber "condom" cover to go over the bulbs. 8Complex can elaborate on this one.
3.Wear Purple sunglasses or something :P

Why Purple ....
from previouse post
Oh man... filter out the yellow by going through a purple (blue & red light only) filter. Then filter out the red by going through the green (yellow & blue light only) filter. Man I feel like a hoser.

Why purple?
Like 8 said....
when the white light (contains all colors) passes thought the purple and then green, different colors are filtered (blocked) out like so...
Purple blocks out all colors except Blue and Red.
note: now the green film has only Blue and Red light to work with.
Green blocks all colors except for Blue & Yellow ... (there is no yellow left, see the above line) .. so, Blue light is the only color that can come through now.

Q: O.K. What do I do with this colored sheet to change my instument blue? And will it mess up my needles movement?
A: No. and No, unless you do something brainless and crank on the guage face or try to remove the needles. Which both are not needed to do.
from previouse post
I have done this on my car with absolulty no problems start to finish. And have had it in for since thursday. I don't have a digital camera so I will post pics as soon as I can. ....
Slipping a thiner that paper thin sheet of semi-transparent sheet of drk purple WILL not warp or push the thick plastic sheet gauge face out the 1/8 or 1/4 of an inch needed to hender the needles movments.
Also you DON'T need to bend the gauge face like a gorilla and warp it to insert this 1/75th + of inch sheet of velem or gel. Or yank out your needles.
Q: "ALSO - How does putting it in work? Do you pop out the cluster from the back and then just put this on the backside of it between the backside of the face and the mechanisms? Or do you have to pull the face yourself? Personally I'd a bit iffy about pulling the entire face..."
A:
Part I
Break down of the instrument panel....
(this is a profile cut away of the MY00 instrument panel)
The face of the gauge (let's call it the gauge sheet) itself is a plastic sheet about the thickness of a credit card.
Behind that is a solid platform of 1/8" thick clear plastic (let's call this the clear platform) that gauge sheet rest on.
There is a ring tab under the need center cap the hold the gauge sheet to the clear platform.
Between the gauge sheet and the clear platform is were you slide in the thin color sheet.
How?... just like you would slide a business card behind a credit card in your wallet.
Behind the clear platform is a about 1" of open. In this open space the are the tips of the bulbs and the ends of the mechanism (copper coils) the needles go into. As far as I can tell there are not exposed moving parts in the mechanisms and is surrounded by plastic. You can see down into it through the clear platform if you were to remove the gauge sheet.
Lastly, you have a 'sandwich' circuit board where the mechanical parts are soldered in and & the bulb holders are twisted in. The back of the circuit board is protected from any accidental shorting by a raise plastic cover with holes allowing access to the back of bulb holders (they looks like small knobs) and holes for testing leads to testing circuits on the board. (..yes, my major was electrical engineering & with a little mechanical drafting)
BTW: the whole instrument panel unit has three plugs that clip in on the top left, center,& right sides of the unit. It sits in a cavity and is secured in by three screws (bottom left & right, top center) that also hold in the inner-shroud and the clear plastic windows/case bezel (these clip onto the instument panel unit).
.... In the process of trying to change my instrument panel color a week ago I almost took apart the whole unit coming just sort of desodering out the mechanical units. Good new though, I was careful when I did this and everything still works . But I would NOT recommend someone else to disassemble their entire instrument panel unit. Which is not needed to do this mod.

Do you have a solution for changing the climate controls and maybe (if you want to go crazy) the rear defroster button and fog light button?
And can you be sure that putting a red film over the odo will produce the red light some of us are looking for? We still have to keep in mind that it is normally green.
But either way the I'm glad that people are actually experimenting with different ways to complete this mod that so many people have been wanting to do, and were not gutsy enough to take apart their clusters.

Hey Island,
The center panel is next in line. Once I get going full out on it I'll keep everyone informed on the results. So far it's color is appearing to be bulb related, which is good.

Found some colored instrument bulbs, but I will have to check to confirm if they are THE ONES that fit our instrument panels.
For allitle over twice the price of clear bulbs you can get them in ...Blue, Red, Green [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/rolleyes.gif[/img] , Amber, ...and Purple.
This Thursday I'm meeting up again with some other local I-Clubbers to do the 'Color Film' install. I'll try pick up a set of bulbs (if they fit, ..cross your fingers) and try them out on Thurs.
The guy I talked with will sell them to me in bulk without me being a distributor [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img] . Again ... all of this depends on if they fit and are the proper voltage cuz we don't want go letting out the smoke out of the instrument panel components. (ol' school electronic folks know what mean [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/wink.gif[/img] )
If everything works out and if I can get them in bulk with no problems I let everyone know when they'll be avalible.

Wait!! Never mind, I just completed the job a couple of hours ago! Found a Theatrical lighting store in Portland. I got the gels and put them in.... Looks realy nice, I used DARK purple so my lights are a little dim but realy deep blue. (and my guages work perfectly!) It only took me about 30 min!
All I need now are some higher wattidge bulbs. Anybody know where to get them?
Reflix, thanks for this cool mod, maby you can put it in the mod section!

Bulbs are next inline. I'm close to finding some but could be could a dead end. until i get my hands on them and try it.
I replyed to this on the original post saying that changing to higher wattage can be a very bad thing and fry something on the circuit board of the instument panel. If you want brighter bulbs, do just that. Find bulbs that burn brighter but still use the save voltage.
i.e. halogens vs incondecent(sp?).
But even with a blue/purple bulb the light would still appear dimmer due to the some of the light being absorbed by the 'pigment' in the glass. Also the over all color of light is a darker one..Blue.
On VW they look bright because they probably use differnet bulbs (higher voltage) or use clear bulb that only has to shine through on layer of color. But all this is just a 'I think' cuz I have not looked at the VW instument panel's constuction and I doubt any of my friends will let me rip apart their new GTi's [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/tongue.gif[/img] just to find out.

This is the very promising results...
The Hi-intensity bulbs for the clear corner marker are the same voltage and size for the 1 big bulb that lights up the Fuel & temp area. Finding the same bulb for the Speed & Tach might present a problem. They are twice as small and may be hard to find in Hi-intensity.
Using the combination of the right colored gel and the Hi-intensity bulbs dropped my jaw [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/eek.gif[/img] .
It produced an a electric blue that's very bright. Just about brighter that the stock green! And most surprisingly, looks BETTER than the VW'S interior lights!! IMO. Note: Bulb sizes are mention earlier in the thread.
One blub size down 1 more to go and VW won't be able to touch this!! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/biggrin.gif[/img]
Stay tuned....

what happens if you disconnect the odometor by mistake, i heard that the lcd screen turns a rainbow color and that you have to get it fixed at the dealer. Is this true???

Are you talking about disconect the the samll ODO screen off of the intrument pannel unit.
If this is the case , sorry I've haven't heard of anyone doing this, or what to do to get it fix.
But on some LCD screen if you press down on them you'll get a rainbow effect. At any rate is not good for the screen.
maybe someone else knows... anyone?
