I want more horn
Well, after 8+ hours of driving between Cincy and Detroit, and constantly getting stuck behind left-lane campers who refuse to move over even after repeated headlight flashing and horn honking (I hate Ohio drivers  ), I have finally reached my last straw with regards to Japanese, or at least small car, horns. Through four Hondas and now one Subaru, I'm am tired of horns that simply cannot be heard outside of the car at highway speeds.
A new, more powerful horn will definitely be my next mod. I want to be able to cut through the blaring stereo of the fifth car in front of me while running down the highway at 70MPH. (Well, I guess when I would actually NEED the horn is when I'm forced to go 54MPH...:p ) I want a serious horn.
So where should I start looking? I'd prefer it be something relatively easy to add on, and preferably would not void my warranty. This would be for a WRX wagon.

I recommend Hella or FIAMM air horns. They are mega loud. Usually, people get scared.

People who hog the left lane and pay no attention to rules of the road (in almost every drivers manual I have read, it says left lane is for passing only) are the ones who piss me off the most.
There should NEVER be any cause to pass somebody on the right, not only is it rude, but also dangerous.
If you are sitting in the left hand lane and not passing traffic in the right lane, then you should NOT be in the left lane. You should be with the other traffic going the same speed as you in the right lane.
When people flash their lights at you, that means they are trying to tell you something that you clearly were too stupid to pick up on without the added visual effects.
Go talk to some ambulance drivers, firetruck drivers, or highway patrol officers.... They will tell you one of their #1 frustrations is the people who cruise along at or slightly below the speed limit in the left (PASSING) lane while they are trying to get to an emergency scene.
You are not a police officer/trooper. You do not have the legal authority to regulate other people's speed. If you see someone driving that is a threat to you or other motorists, then call highway patrol or 911 and report them.
As far as getting people out of the way who are hogging the left lane, there isn't too much you can do. Flashing lights is about it, most people won't even hear the supertone horns above 55mph if you are behind them.
However, for city driving the supertones are great. They are also a very good deer/wildlife deterrent and I love 'em (even though mine aren't running at full power - I was too lazy to fabricate a wiring harness).

I don't think those Hellas are lound enough. Sure they're loud when you are standing outside it, but if I'm crusing down the road at about 70, stereo full bore, and I honk my horns (I have those hellas too) they are really not that loud.
I think you want some airhorns! Like semi's!!!!

midnx03, your second post is hypocritical.
Hella Supertones are a very welcome start. A big part of the reason the stock horn sucks, is because there's only one, and it's about 1/3rd the size of ONE Hella...

Follow the supplied wiring diagram. Mounting choices are up to you, but they are directional horns and benefit from the clearest path to the idiot in front of you.

Actually I find the stock horn pretty loud for a Japanese car, I hate the wimpy horn on my mom's Corolla. I am comparing it to my '93 Olds Cutlass that I had. Anyone have sounds clips of any horns? It may be useful driving in NYC for the many pedestrians and taxi cab drivers and the many idiots Garden State Parkway and people who can't pay using the EZ Pass.

hehe
I say you get one of those horns that play DIXIE....better yet get one of those 18 wheeler truck air horns......might shake yoru car apart though hehe

I haven't heard hellas yet but I might get a set to replace the stock horn. It is plenty loud if it is hit when you are under the hood. Damn no good friends. :D :D
| Julian | 09-28-2001 10:35 AM |
Naw, the stock horn isn't loud...it's the shock of having your friends do you like that that gets you. The Hellas...those are loud. Not MACK truck air-horn loud, but enough to get some notice.

there's lots of sites on the net out there that you can use to get airhorns... normal ones, ones that play music whatever
| chuglobal | 09-28-2001 11:46 AM |
I agree ...
Alot of people don't hear or at least they don't seem to care. What are some place/links where I can find very loud hornes? I have had a Mecedes, BMW, and a SUV not see me and try to come into my lane and I don't follow people in their blind spot. They seem too busy talking on the cell or other people. I only had my car for 48 hrs so I would have beat them and their passengers if they did hit me. I wish people could drive! It sucks because just because we drive good doesn't mean some idiot is not going to hit us.

If you want LOUD, go for the Hella's. I have a pair after enduring the frustration of our wimpy stock horn. I went through several mounting and wiring schemes until I settled on the current mounted-behind-grill with full harness.
They are loud enough that I am scared to use them in the city. If you get them, mount them with a clear path forward and USE THE WIRING BOX they give you. I didn't at first and was very disappointed. Then I wired everything correctly and got a pleasant surprise :D

In the city? Just wait till you use them under an overpass!

Hella supertones installed on a WRX Wagon. Pop out the grill and mount 'em where the center horn went.

Painted Supertones....
Ms. Gal,
I am planning on a little flurry of work in November when my sway bar and SS brake lines :) arrive. Among other things, I figure it's a good time to take off the calipers and paint 'em (I've decided on blue with my silver wagon). I'm going to order set of Supertones and figure I should just stretch the can of blue Foliatec to paint them at the same time. Questions:
Did you disassemble your Supertones to paint them? Any issues there?
I figure the Foliatec should be fine on the horns assuming I just sand them lightly. Thoughts?
Jim

| Darwin | 10-21-2001 05:28 AM |
they're loud enough. really directional, so they don't make much of a racket in the passenger compartment.
They're held together by 8 or so screws. easy to disassemble. I sanded mine lightly with 1000-grit and shot em with 5 coats of automotive white truck paint.
I'll trade em in if someone can get my car to sound like an oncoming train though. :D

if not, how much do a set of Supertones run and are they difficult to install?

If Supertones are $10 each, then I got screwed!
Well, since I had such a hard time finding a web site to help with my Supertone installation, I decided to make my own:

There is a link to a site where you can buy them.
Comments welcome.
