Irish Mikes qualifies 34th in Speed WC

Don't forget, Irish Mike is out there at Road Atlanta this weekend battling the other Touring cars in Speed World Challenge. The race is tomorrow. SCCA has live timing at their website:
http://www.speedvisionwc.com/
Still off the pace, but lets see how many cars he can jump at the start!

Hopefully the cars won't suffer any mechanical difficulties this race and be able to show some good times!

Michael Flynn took 26th. Steven Pianteri was out early in the race, but I don't know why. Good to see a decent clean finish for Mike.
The SCCA Live timing is pretty informative, not bad since we can't watch it live on TV.
Podium for WC Touring:
1) Bill Auberlen (BMW 325i)
2) Jeff Altenburg (Mazda Protege)
3) Shauna Marinus (Mazda Protege)
Of note, it's the first time in WC Touring history that a woman has taken a podium spot.

Steven Piantieri went out on lap 2 for mechanical. The Speed site doesn't say any more, unfortunately.
Mike Flynn gained 6 spots in his first lap.

It was a good race -- those Protege's are very fast and will be hard to beat (unless you're on Will Turner's team).
Mike was well off the pace of the front runners but that can be attributed to lack of horsepower. His driving was excellent and the car handles very well. If they'd just let him either bump the displacement, slap on a turbo, or something he'd be very competitive.
Me and several other Scooby folks watched it from the 10A/10B infield. Great stuff.

turbos and increasing displacement are illegal in touring. They need to build the motor and spin it to 9k like everyone else if they want to make power.

What makes you think he's down on power? They're pulling about 290 HP right now. Maybe that's still not enough given the weight of an Impreza...
World Challenge is fairly accomodating in terms of letting a certain cars mods make it competitive. This is why the Protoges are fast - they didn't used to be. WC changed the allowed mods to make them competitive. It's all about the "VTS" - Vehicle Technical Specification. Each car has a different sheet of allowed mods. They already allowed Mike to switch from SOHC to DOHC heads.

He just didn't seem to be able to pull on people while in the straights. He made up ground on the corners and lost it again on the following straights, at least from what I saw. I should have said "he's down on power relative to the other cars"...his power to weight ratio is probably a good bit less than the front runners. Nevertheless, it is good to see someone stepping up to the plate and campaigning a pair of Imprezas...
Go Irish Mike's! :D

If that car is putting down 290, it should be pulling on other cars, not being pulled on.
Even so, the cars with the least power, the BMWs place consistently high. So power isnt everything.

Will Turner's gang definitely know how to make a 3 series run. They have the total package, especially now that they are using Auberlen as the driver. Interestingly, when Will Turner himself was driving the car at last year's Petit Le Mans, those Proteges were *all over* him. A few months later, Auberlen jumps in the same car (more or less) and spanks the Proteges. No offense to Will Turner at all but Auberlen might possibly be the best 3-series based BMW driver out there.
Irish Mike's will get there given another season or two of development. Hopefully they will continue to be able to attract and keep quality sponsors so they have the means to continue development on the cars.
Did anyone ever find out exactly what the mechanical problem with Pianteri's car was? He just disappeared off the track...

You must be thinking of GT, not Touring car. In GT, the M3s are the "light underpowered car". It's the exact opposite in Touring.
You can get an incredible amount of power out of M50 and M52 motors. The displacement limit for Touring is 2.8L and the BMW motors are 2.5 and 2.8 sixes. The only other motor with similar power potential is the de-stroked Lexus IS300 motor which is 2.8L.

Hrm. Well, with continued development of the EJ25, they should be able to get it up there. He's probably going to have to go back to the WC official and ask for more allowances on mods...

At least it looks like SCCA PRO is helping them with a low weight. The Impreza is listed at only 50 pounds more than the Protege and 100 pounds less than the RSX. I think it's just a matter of time before we see those Imprezas at the front.

Agreed -- another season or two and they will be very competitive. They ran quite well considering this is their first tour in WC Touring...not everybody is a factory backed Mazd...oops, well, you know.

I Don't Know were you are getting the info about the 290 HP. But they aren't there Yet. They'll be back at it Tuesday I'm Sure.

:)
I agree, Scott.
Those Protege race engines cost $18k! Good thing Mazda absorbs some of the cost or you can be sure that there would not be a single 250hp Protege at the front. That tells us how competitive this series is and the kind of "battle" that Irish Mike's Racing has in front of them.
I would be very surprised if those Subarus had 290hp right now.

It may be possible to get a lot of power out of those motors, but as it has already been mentioned in this thread, each car has its own rulebook governing engine and chassis prep rules. The rules dont allow nearly as much engine work for the BMWs as they do for the mazdas and hondas. The BMWs put out around 220-230hp, where the Mazdas are putting out north of 250.
A friend of mine manages the Bimmerworld shop, who run a 325. (top 10 finish! :) )

Steve -- did either of them make any mention of the HP output of the 2.5 NA while you were visiting with them?

I spoke to them a bit on Friday and they said they are still coming to grips with the car. They had the cars all set up for LRP and were now working on finding that good setup for Atlanta again. Seems that is one of the hardest thing with running a new car is getting a handle on all the setups for all the different tracks.
Give 'em time, they will get it together. Very few cars come out fast in their first few races, remember, this is still only number three for them.

SWC TC HP

Having a new team try to break into the SWC series is very difficult, especially with a car that no one has ever run before, as the level of prep of the cars of the top teams is VERY high. Getting the cars to handle well is the most difficult part of the entire operation, and varies sufficiently track to track that the experienced teams have an edge in setup and knowing what is necessary to make the car fast in any given set of circumstances. The Subarus have a very competitive power to weight ratio, though not as good as the Mazdas, they are not the worst either. With time, they will catch up, though it may take a year or two before it happens.
| ottawars | 07-02-2003 01:31 PM |
At mosport Michael Flynn said that they're putting out 300 hp. But they can't reduce the impreza's weight anymore, and they're over a hundred pounds away from meeting their minimum weight limit.

Was I reading all that right (in their diary) that they have had oiling related failures at all three races this year? Teething pains really suck. :(
