Is this a bad tint job or normal? part 1

CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 01:56 PM

Is this a bad tint job or normal?
I rencently got 30% tint done on all windows except the windshield. It has been 5 days since it was put on. I found some bubbles in the tint, where it looks like there is dirt stuck between the tint and the glass. I have linked to some pics below. Is this a job that I need to get re-done? Or is this just part of getting a tint job, and it's never perfect?

if its been 5 days thats REAL bad...

take her back...and no...a good tint installer can make it pretty damn perfect
BlackSnake 02-22-2006 01:58 PM

mmm Looks like a bad job... :(
dangerousatom 02-22-2006 02:08 PM

Ya! a very bad job 4sure. Any flat glass, like windows in your doors should be perfict ( for they are easy to tint ) the only excustes that a tint shop should be able to give for a bad door glass job is scratched glass.....those aint no sctatches. I have tinted many cars and the most important thing is CLEANING the glass
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 02:10 PM

alright, thanks for the input. the shop that did it has a very good rep around here, i'm sure it won't be an issue getting him to fix it.
subarua2 02-22-2006 02:11 PM

where did you get that done? I'm in Ann Arbor too.. have had both my current WRX, and my previous 2.5RS tinted at Auto Xtras out on Jackson Rd (across from Dunning Subaru) They've always done a good job for me.

You can always expect some tiny imperfections in tint (dust or whatever) but those pics make it look pretty bad. Hope who ever did it offers a warranty, or some sort of guarantee.
allsubaru83 02-22-2006 02:12 PM

I hope it isnt an issue, i would be mad...
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 02:26 PM

it was forward motion motorsports. i'm not worried, he has a very good rep, so whatever is wrong, he will make it right.

If he's going to fix it and make it perfect, then no worries. :alien:
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 02:34 PM

is it possible for that to be fixed without completly redoing all of the effected windows?
EvolvedAK 02-22-2006 02:42 PM

yeah its a bad job..usually a good installer for tint will warrenty their work and make sure to fix any bubbles that will occur..just go and ask them to fix it.. and if you did it yourself... do it again..and make sure you really get that air out
Mr. Sadface 02-22-2006 02:42 PM

suxor!
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 03:09 PM

so will he have to completly redo the bad window(s) or is this repairable?
Justin80 02-22-2006 03:16 PM
so will he have to completly redo the bad window(s) or is this repairable?
He'll have to redo the windows.
DreddRS25 02-22-2006 03:23 PM
He'll have to redo the windows.
Yep.

Cost of tinting is usually the labor. Take it back.
bpang1 02-22-2006 03:23 PM

He really should redo all the windows.

Maybe he was busy that day and didn't remember to clean your windows.

Anyways, that is a really poor job if done by a professional.
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 03:27 PM

well he definitley cleaned the windows, i watched him do the whole job...in general, is there any problem in getting a tint job when it is very cold out? the job was done indoors in the warmth, but once it was done it was outside in below freezing temps pretty much constantly
Kean 02-22-2006 03:31 PM

pottymouth 02-22-2006 03:32 PM

He didn't scrape the window very well, and I would bet that he lost control of the large piece of back tint and dragged it across the seat. Each white spot is a piece of dirt, you can't get it perfect, but that is unacceptable.

If the other windows look good, there is no need to redo them.

The sooner you take it back the easier it will be for them to replace. Although after a week it doesn't really matter that much.
pottymouth 02-22-2006 03:33 PM
is it possible for that to be fixed without completly redoing all of the effected windows?
No that is dirt and you have to redo the whole window.
Impreza_RX 02-22-2006 03:33 PM

The tint job is horrible. I can maybe see 1-2 bubbles per window, but nothing like that. It looks like as if someone jizzed on your window before they put the tint on.
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 03:42 PM

ok guys, i got it, i'll get it taken care of :-) thanks
Kean 02-22-2006 03:46 PM

If anything, colder temps may just prolong the time required for the film to set (i.e. water to evaporate, bubbles to disappear, etc). Those spots appear to be the result of dust/debris that was left on the glass as everyone else has mentioned (Ive seen it before) as WRXSIG said, a good installation will look perfect (or very near).
t3hWIT 02-22-2006 06:56 PM

Damn, I did the windows on my last car in a hurry, on the garage floor and it turned out a hell of alot better than that. Dust or air?
subeman90 02-22-2006 08:03 PM

When I have done tint in the past I always do it in the summer. Also, I always do it early in the day and let the car closed up tightly outside in the sun all day. I called it "ghetto baking"

FWIW, I never do rear windows myself....they are too hard for my level of expertise (tools etc.) and I always screw them up anyhow. :furious:
SilverBugEye03 02-22-2006 08:17 PM

That is definitely "stuff" underneath the tint...doesnt look like it was cleaned well. Was there tint on there previously?
CletusTheDwarf 02-22-2006 08:20 PM

nope, fresh windows
ase05scooby 02-23-2006 12:02 AM

Looks like he forgot to do the prep work. Pretty bad job in my opinion im no tint specialist but i dont have to be one to see thats not a very good job :(
CletusTheDwarf 02-23-2006 12:12 AM

no worries, i sent him the pics, he said that it definitley shouldn't look like that, and to bring it back so he can redo it. won't be able to for 2 weeks because of spring break, but it will be taken care of.
SilverBugEye03 02-23-2006 03:46 PM

good deal...at least he is standing by his work!
John__Gotti 02-23-2006 04:44 PM

Nice camera have the same one myself.
phwanc 02-23-2006 05:29 PM

I would take it back if I found just one bubble... no excuses from a professional if you paid the money!

Chp_Stix 02-23-2006 06:28 PM

look horrible to me, i did a better job myself on my old car. it looks like they didnt even clean your entire window. i would take it back and bitch like a mo fo
CletusTheDwarf 02-23-2006 06:34 PM

geez guys, i just wanted to make sure it was bad and should be fixed, not for everyone to keep ripping on the guy that installed it. i showed him the pics, he said right away to bring it back and he'll redo the effected windows. he's a good guy, and he's making it right.
Kean 02-23-2006 06:51 PM

You already made it clear that they were going to redo it for you.
markadopolus 02-23-2006 06:52 PM

Wow. Thats a horrible tint job.
Kiwi 02-23-2006 06:57 PM

Looks like the windows weren't cleaned well enough before the film was applied. I've just had mine done and they look good.
I agree with the others, it should look way better than that.
Impr3zy0u 02-23-2006 08:47 PM

Even if he does good work as you say i would not take it back to him, if he let it leave like that, then well, they suck. I got mine tinted and when i picked it up it had pretty much 0 bubbles from the second i picked it up. Looks like he did it in a sand box. Pm me if you want to get it done right.
