JIC Auto-x setups?

I've just swapped a set of JIC FLT A2 onto the car and was wondering if anyone have some basic settings I can start with?
I have and auto-x this weekend that I'm hoping to do some testing with different set-ups or just go with what someone recommends and go from there.
Also what do you set them to for basic driving?
Oh yeah, spring rates are 650f/550r :D

My first suggestion would be to swap the front and rear springs.
Next, I would start with the settings at about 3 or four clicks from full soft. Then start clicking to stiffer settings. I ran on 450 front and rear spring rates and found that my best settings were 3 from full soft front and 5 from full soft rear.

Depends on what type of pavement but we started with ours at 5 from soft front and 7 from soft rear for most of the season. Typically left them at about 3 from soft for the street. 8k/10k setup on ours.

Those used to be my coilovers. :)
I gave Ryan a laundry list of settings to work with last night. And the springs are currently 550F/650R. Plus, he has a whole box full of other spring rates to play with, if he so chooses.

Should make for a fun ride. What tires are you running? What other accompining suspension peices do you have?

Ryan, Doing your homework, I see. I'd like to go a little stiffer, also, similar to what you have on there. I want a ride! :alien:

Gotta say thanks to Erik (RoundtheBend) for letting me run these this year since the track car will see some gravel now instead :D
Right now the suspension list is this:
Whiteline 22mm Front Swaybar
Whiteline 18-22mm Adj. Rear Swaybar (Going to upgrade to an Adj 20-24 soon)
Whiteline Endlinks on all 4 corners
Whiteline Heavy Duty Swaybar Mount
JIC FLT A2 Struts 550f/650r :)
Noltec Front Camber/Castor Plate
JIC Rear Pillow Ball Mounts
Primitive Racing Front Strut Tower Bar
Sti Replica Rear Strut Tower Bar
Tires:
215/45 16 Falken Azenis Sports on Stock '00 RS Rims
Jeff, any time you want a ride let me know. Just need you to teach me how to drive :D

I'd like to take it for a spin and see what it drives like. And I will teach if you really want.

Thanks Ryan, Our cars are VERY similar. My guess is that your rear-sway will be fine since you went stiffer rates in the rear, shouldn't have any problems rotating. We should get a lap together on Sunday.

just have to sort out the alignment at a later date, every place I've been has had either been booked solid or their rack was broken?
Any time you want to andy, I'm looking at this year becoming a better driver in hopes of Nationals someday

Ryan,
I'll have my people call your people and our people can have lunch while we're autocrossing.
I'm somewhat concerned that the setup is too rear-biased for asphalt and street tires. I'm just starting to play with my RS (stock with the Whiteline 18-22 in the middle) and so far its very neutral. I can be agressive with the throttle, brake, and steering inputs without the car fighting back. And the car can be driven on throttle from mid-corner out. *Shrug*
Of course you have to drive it to find out. I won't be up there on Sunday, but maybe next Sunday (driving my S2000 with revalved Penskes)

IMO...an RS does not need the heavy rearward spring bias like the STX class WRX. Not even close. When i drove an STX RS in West coast Pros in 2003, we had re-valved Tein HA with 7K/6K combo, 22mm front bar, and a 20-24mm rear bar. The car was fairly loose on asphalt, and was perfectly nuetral on the tighter Atwater Pro concrete course. In fact...it was the one RS i never had to dial in large amounts of rear toe-out.
Hiroo's car on the other hand, was running 600# f/r, and it seemed like he was always fighting oversteer issues.
Just my opinion.

We shall see tomorrow what will happen :)
Next Sunday is the Doo Wops rally, I should either be crewing or spectating. Not sure yet as the car is not finished

So, what's the verdict?
| Ryan24 | 02-28-2005 12:21 AM |
It's going to be some what of a learning curve.
It has oversteer, but nothing that cannot be managed with clean lines into corners or some adjustments to the settings and air pressure.
It was nice to actually go into the sweepers and actually have the car turn instead of understeering.
All in all I'm very impressed with the suspension. Every run I tried something different and the times kept on improving, not quite trophy times but I know where I can go faster now!

Yeah Ryan, you were 5th. Subarus 2nd thru 5th, pretty cool.

Was Jim Daniels (little red Miata) on street tires or race tires? What were the temperatures and course conditions?
| Ryan24 | 03-01-2005 12:06 AM |
I think it got around the high 50's to low 60's, dry course. I'm not sure what Jim was on as I was too busy with my car.
| DougM | 03-01-2005 12:35 AM |
Jim was on STREET tires, smokin fast. he was faster than Dieter Beldi on race rubber :0
the course was medium technical with nothing terribly fast (I only hit the rev limiter in 2nd for an instant in two locations). it was 60' out for most of the afternoon. Another noteable ST time was Keith Brown's TOPM run in his TT, second fastest ST time of the day, with Jason Spore and Abe Douglas in the same car close behind (they had a lot more "looks" then we did though :) ).

Well it helped on my car. Last year 400/500 but had a shock seal go before Nats. I am running 500/600 this year in DSP. Billy B. it also running higher in the rear. I am going to have to tone down some of my camber as R tires have much stiffer side walls. :D
I do have a friend here locally that just got a set of JIC FLT A2 RS's with 500/600. I am going to check them out when I get the chance.

The best thing about JIC parts is that you can take them off your car.

I ran last year with 600lb/600lb springs, and usually set it to 4F and 8R (clicks from soft). Seemeds to work pretty well although on some of the tighter courses I would skid across instead of gripping and turning. This was with 255 Victos too.
| DougM | 03-01-2005 11:45 AM |
oh Ryan, just to clearify what I was saying on Sunday about my understandings on the damping adjusters. The instructions I have for my FLTA2's indicate that you tighten the nob to the right all the way first, then back it off 15 clicks to find full soft (on mine there are still 2 or 3 clicks left after 15 before it stops). and then adjust up from there...
since there is slop (2 or 3 clicks for me) it does make a difference, so I thought I'd mention this here and if I'm wrong hopefully someone can set me straight.

I am installing a set tomorrow. Previous owner had 10k/9k which I want to switch to 9k/10k. (STX, Azenis)
Should I expect any issues? Are the lengths of the springs the same or at least close enough?
Thanks,
John

Jim was on Azenis.
Doug, Abe only had about 1/2 second on us, well maybe .6, something like a 49.45, we'd have gotten into the 49's with as many runs as they had.
Kind of a horsepower course, I hit my rev-limit about 3-4 times per run, but not enough for 3rd gear, couldn't ask for better weather.
