All the reviews of those I've heard are good. I went with the STi SS (since I ordered it about a week before Kartboy released theirs) and studied the Kartboy diagrams so I could cut and weld the subaru version to match the Kartboy setup asclose as I could. I didn't get the ratio perfect, but it works well.
They shorten the throw over the pivot by about an inch (the change I felt confident in copying), and lengthen the throw under by probably less than a cm... which is a decent amount ratio-wise. I still have their bushing sitting on my desk. I didn't get it in time to install it but if you over tighten the bolt that holds that factory bushing, you can get a similar result.

defintaly a worthwhile mod. get the bushings while you're at it

I had my short shifter installed (Kartboy shop) as soon I got the STI.
Go for it, big improvement!.;)

Can anyone give me a comparison between the kartboy, and subaru SS? I have subaru bucks I can spend, but I've heard so many good things about the kartboy that I might go with that.
| 2phless | 01-25-2005 09:59 AM |
The subaru one cost too much more to compare, and is a slightly harder install. I wish I'd gone kartboy but they didn't have them advertised yet. But, just FYI, the STi version (shortened 1") is just a tad harder than stock to shift, and I've been told the Kartboy bushing in one would solve that problem. The Kartboy bushing just sitting on top of my computer monitor, mocking me, doesn't quite do the trick.

Subaru SS = 10% throw reduction
Kartboy SS = 40% throw reduction

I have the Kartboy SS and bushings. The shifting feels more precise, the throw is shorter, and the gates seem closer together. The shifting itself feels notchy, but not in a negative way. There are two distinct movements when you shift, the shifter coming out of the gear its in and the shifter moving into the gear you just selected.

i switched from the stock short shift, to the kartboy with busings etc...
it is a fantastic change....tight, click when u shift type shifter...
you will not regret it...... plus they are just genuinely nice people at kartboy and many carry their line of product....
easy install...worthwhile mod...
now i just sit waiting for them to get the evo MR one finished...finding gears in that car is like finding a skinny chick and funnel cake convention...

Yes and yes the Kartboy is just much better than the factory SS. I have 5K SS miles and a very happy customer.
BTW, you get an atomic fireball and a shirt too.

I love the kartboy SS but do yall experience the difficult 1-2 shift when the car is extremely cold and just started up?
...if you over tighten the bolt that holds that factory bushing, you can get a similar result.
This is absolutely untrue, the factory bushing feels like a pencil eraser compared to the Kartboy bushing, no amount of tightening of the bolt will mimic the feel. There is a metal sleeve in the factory bushing that will prevent you from overtightening it anyway, you would have to cut that sleeve down to squeeze the stock bushing tighter, which would do pretty much nothing anyway.

I left out the metal bushing by accident when installing my Kartboy and it was still better than stock. And a bigger difference when I installed that bushing (fortunately there are a few STI's around here) !!!
| sti'lin | 01-26-2005 08:29 AM |
I installed the bushings and the shifter and I am not the most mechanically inclined guy in the world., the shifter worked fine with the STI shift knob.
One thing that will really help is a crow's foot to get at one of the bolts when installing the bushings.
I autocross my car and I definitely feel a faster more poitive 1-2, and 2-1 shift over stock.

if you have a 2005 STi, you already have the Subaru SS... I installed the Subaru SS in my 04 STi with the kartboy bushings and it is a dream!

Not all 2005's come with the factory SS. It is a dealer installed option. If an STi comes with the SS, most likely it was installed at the port or dealer.

kartboy shifter and bushings are a must, especially if you go to a dragstrip for some occasional fun :D

i already had the sti ss on my car when i got it... could i add the kartboy set for better improvement?
| JikJak | 01-27-2005 07:27 AM |
so the factory SS only reduces the throw by 10% ?
kartboy states a 40% reduction.
thats quite a big difference. has anyone tried both out? is the kartboy much better?

I got a Kartboy SS and bushings on my STi, and I have no regrets whatsoever. I love it. Definitely gives it a notchy feel, and not in a bad way. If you can find someone local who will let you check it out, I'd suggest that. :)

I'm kind of debating on what to get myself, Kartboy is just the shifter arm with the bushings. And then you have the Subaru Short Shifter, which to me, it looks like a complete shifter swap, including the linkage. I would think that it would be better to get the subaru one instead, and like everybody said, just put the Kartboy bushings.
Oh, by the way I used to have a Kartboy on my WRX before, now I have and STI no ss yet.
