Loudest possible horn? (that fits)
Hi all,

My commute to work is about 30 min of insanity, flooded with every kind of biohazard starting with blind people behind the wheel of a 1957 boat, , women putting on make up, while feeding babies in the back seat of an SUV...so on..

Lately, with crappy weather, all of them insist on changing lanes into me. I've been looking around for a set of LOUD!! Horns, and Hella Supertones seems to be the choice around here.

Here are the specs: One 300 Hz and one 500Hz. 144 Watts 118 dB. I just dont think 118dB will be enough.

Is there a set of horns out there within the same price range, but much louder? I mean something so obnoxious, it'll make you jump in your seat and stop doing stupid things?

Thank you. (rant over)

try something air powered :)
bunni 11-18-2003 06:40 PM

I was stuck in traffic once, and I mean real traffic, stopped for over 3 hours. Anyways this guy just a bit ahead of me and in the lane to the right of me gets out of his truck, hops on the bed, turns on what looked and sounded to be an air compressor... then hops back into his truck, only to unleash the loudest, ungodliest bleating horn you've ever heard on land air or sea, it was, AMAZING. everyone was so pissed off already it just seemed hilarious, a perfect expression of our anger:devil:  :furious:

the cops walked through traffic to give him a ticket

!!HAAAAAAAA HA HA HA HA... Train horns must be heard 2 miles away, it's safety feature... lost story short, my buddy mounted one into his 82 if not older VW and ran a cord across the A-Pillar to use it. He lives some where in the sticks, so it dont really bother any one.

Now THAT's funny!

I once heard of a Jaguar owner who rigged up an air compressor for his trunk, and installed a set of truck horns. Quite the sound, I am told. Fire trucks also have rather loud horns, if you can figure out how to mount 'em.

How's the sound on those things? I personally think the stock ones are pretty loud.
wrxballer54 11-18-2003 08:05 PM

where did you guys buy those horns from? how much?
bemani 11-18-2003 08:27 PM

If you're cheap, you can just hook up a bigger relay to the stock horns. It'll make it louder :D
e_a_olson 11-18-2003 08:30 PM

NewShockerGuy 11-19-2003 05:18 AM

Where did you guys/girls get them? I want yellow ones to match my sonic yellow rex...

Do you just unplug your current horns and plug these in or do they require special wiring..etc?

Thanks,

-Nigel

awd4ever:
if you want LOUD - I suggest this (this is what I did):

1. Keep the existing horn circuit AND horns. Re-locate the passenger side stock horn from the center metal beam towards a mounting hole on the passenger side. Let it hang so that it can be seen THROUGH the grill (look closely at my attached pic and you will see my relocated passenger-side horn) NOTE: this MAY require extension of the stock passenger-side horn wiring. Keep the driver's side stock horn where it is.

2. Mount and install BOTH Hella Supertones on the center metal beam. DO use the supplied relay. Trigger the relay by directly tapping into the horn switch circuit inside the cabin.

3. With a toggle switch in the cabin, wire it in series with the HELLA tap you did in 2, thus you get:
Switch open: Relocated stock horns only.
Switch closed: Relocated stock + Hella (4 horns in parallel!)

I found that with this setup, I can be HELLA loud when I want to be (the hellas give directional power, while the RELOCATED stocks give a WIDE SPREAD and ADD tremendously to the shrill tone of the hellas. I think this is a case of "the whole being much more than the sum of its parts". Plus, everything runs in parallel with its own relay so you don't have to worry about overloading anything.

AND.. I can be "not so loud" if I want to be by simply toggling the switch back to relocated stock only. I mounted the switch underneath the steering column so horn power is just a toggle away. Kind of like a NOS "horn" shot ;) except it stays toggled until you decide to quiet down.

hope that helps!

DanzBorin 11-19-2003 11:19 AM

Can you just use an old chevy horn? because, no offense, but the supertones are loud, but not very deep and booming (read: manly)... too high pitched...
Dendrobium 11-19-2003 01:23 PM

I agree with DanzBorin - the supertones by themselves are indeed very high pitched. Combining them with another horn will help to fill out the "vocal range" of your horns ;) and thus make them sound less "shrill".

If you use them WITH the stock horns (like in my setup) - they will not sound so shrill. JUST piercing loud. In effect, the relocated stock horns help to fill out the pitch/tone of the horns.

kenchan 11-19-2003 02:15 PM

i use fiamm air horns. get the triple if you really mean it.
im using the dual.

duals are more tonal and pleasant sounding.
triples are dessonant (sp?) more angry tone.
Ahzlon 11-19-2003 02:42 PM

lol well if ur all for the "burly" sound.. get a set of Caddy horns.. those always sound kewl :P
or do as my friend did to his f-150 with a small compressor in the back... REAL train horns.. but he had pleny of room under the hood to hide them... now where could i mount a set of train horns..*** honks horn and makes grandma down the road soil her depends  ***
Angulimala 11-19-2003 05:29 PM

Why don't you get one of these?

ruiner 11-19-2003 05:58 PM

Those horns look to be 118db also. I would like to find out if there is a horn which produces some sort of 'bass'. Now that would be scary!

it's called a dive horn -- a requirement found on all submarines.
philw007 11-20-2003 11:07 PM

Can someone post a couple sound files for the supertones and maybe the combo supertones+stock.

philw007 11-22-2003 07:35 PM

Thanks for the soundfile...sounds good. Now the second set is the supertones alone or supertones with the stock?

Also, on subiegirl's link for buying the hellas, there are 2 different frequency versions of the supertones...which one is recommended?
