No stereo: What to do with 2-DIN space?
i'm selling off my stereo gear since my WRX is just too loud to make having a stereo worthwhile at freeway speeds. plus it's extra weight that's keeping me from being teh fastar anyway. but i digress.

my real question, besides the subtle spam, is what to do with the 2-DIN space in the dashboard that's going to be left behind? are there products out there that give you a 2-DIN dashboard pocket? in lieu of a better idea -- please suggest below -- that's what i'm aiming for, i guess. i already have EGT and oil pressure gauges in the main gauge bezel so don't really feel the need for any more.

You could get one of those G-Tech's and mount it there with a pocket.
Your sure you don't want a Boost Gauge? You said you had a EGT and Oil.

well, i do have a boost gauge of sorts with the turbo timer (visible left, behind ipod in the pic below)...

no non-gauge suggestions?
blkwrx02 10-17-2005 02:29 PM

Do you count the G-Tech as a gauge?
rayc 10-17-2005 02:32 PM

You could use a open din pocket and one of the din pockets with a door for the second hole...

Forester DIN pocket and STi radio delete plate.
iamrazor 10-17-2005 02:36 PM

the stereo is too heavy? do you take a dump everytime you drive your car too to keep weight down? ;)

FWIW, I actualy have a STi radio delete plate. if you want to trade it for a Forester DIN pocket, lemme know..
ATX25RS 10-17-2005 04:34 PM

pm [emailprotected] he owns a car audio shop. but he has a screen that has all kinds of car read out data....VERY PIMP....and it does it all.....although i guess that is not what you are looking for. you could install a bunch of auxillary lights and mount your switches there...along with a push button starter. :D
Uncle Ben 10-17-2005 05:08 PM

I would just get two separate DIN pockets like the one pictured above, that way at least your making some sort of use with all that empty space. I always think the WRX doesn't have enough storage compartments.

Or, if you really feel money burning a hole in your pocket get a double-din screen and run a navigation system, although I don't know if that would resolve your weight concerns.

I don't know how you could drive everywhere with no radio. Did you try driving for a week with no radio? Might be too loud during freeway speeds, but what about when you are stuck at a traffic light?
ofay 10-17-2005 06:49 PM

If your just gonna put gauges in there, cut a piece of plastic to cover the hole and just mount the gauges to it. Thats what my friend did with his crx and it lookde really good.

He doesn't want gauges. Read Post #1

You should put a double din radio in there.
Lexington 10-18-2005 06:58 PM

ok, i backed down from my original plan, and am just going to ditch the headunit and the sub (and run a cable directly from the iPod to the amp +/- impedence matching if it ends up sounding hideous). subs + boxes are heavy! i certainly haven't taken a dump that weighs THAT much in my life...

i think i found the solution, however. pic is of a 2002 toyota corolla, note double din pocket with door below hvac controls.

Sorry for the blurry pic. But i would keep the pocket i already have and then make a custom block off plate for the open space where the headunit used to be. So i guess see if pioneer sells the pocket. Its nice, it matches the wrx silver in the interior perfectly.

Whatever happened to that SECS thing? It was similar to that, but less ugly. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I sure don't.
cboggess 10-19-2005 04:49 PM

Brushed aluminum plate with three 60mm gauges, knock link lights, and the clock.

edit: oh, and the mute button for the radar detector.

Was that the one being made by the company out of the UK?

I agree. I'd really like to take it apart and work it into some kind of carputer with NAV, touch screen and all the bells and whistles. I'm far from an electrical engineer though.

Just in case anyone didn't figure it out, the picture is a link to the product page and description.

I drive for weeks at a time without turning on the radio, it's not like you're going to die if you don't hear a bunch of commercials.
chris-man 10-23-2005 01:53 PM

use it a storage din for your jolly ranchers. :D
