Other grilles & foglight screens for Forester XTs?

Just got my '04 XT, and I'm not really impressed with the way the front grille looks.
Any ideas on where to look to find either alternate Subaru grilles? Or Aftermarket ones?
And are there foglight covers (the screens, not the STI-style replacement covers) that will fit the XT?

Afaik, at the moment, there aren't really any bodykit options in north america. There are some nice Subaru & aftermarket options in Japan, UK, Australia, & New Zealand. It might take another half year before replicas start popping up in north america.
The only options for covering the fogs are aftermarket bumper kits, which are also not yet available here.

Lol, ok, guess I'll sit and save up some $$ while I wait for the market to catch up.
Thanks!

Will the previous style grilles fit the '04s?

Depends on what you mean by "fit". The my2000-2002 has an integrated grille, where the center and the side pieces are actually one piece. The my2003-2004 have a separate center grille, and 2 side pieces that run between the center grille and the headlights, all the way throughout the bottom of the headlights, and wrapping to the sides.
With a lot of cutting, you can mount the my2000-2002 on your my2004, but the appearance depends on the amount of effort you put. There's also the issue of the different hood line, which continues to the grille side pieces.
I'm saying all this because I too have contemplated transplanting previous model year grilles on the my2003 (SG) forester; because direct oem replacement of the SG forester grille cost about US$210, and no one seems to be selling used / cheaper SG grilles anywhere. In contrast, there are many used SF forester grilles available for sale, for much less than US$50.

Satrya,
Thanks for the info. I forgot the hoodline changed as well as the grilles.
I was looking at doing a swap because I prefer the way the old ones looked, being narrower at the bottom and wider at the top, the reversed 04 looks odd to me...
Guess I'll see what the aftermarket ever comes up with, if they do anything...:(

As I mentioned, if you're willing to import from Japan or other countries where the Subaru dealers actually have optional grilles (e.g. Australia, UK, New Zealand), then there are quite a bit of options. There's actually one that looks like one of the Genome STi grille for the bug eye impreza. There are also the Syms, Corazon, Liberal, TommyKaira, etc.
For reasons other than aesthetics, I'm currently trying to figure out a doable DIY grille which replaces the entire oem grille. Hopefully the total cost and construction complexity is reasonable. I posted about this in the forester forum yesterday. The photo below shows a partial test fit of some of the DIY components. Note that I'm trying to alter the lower shape of the grille from /____\ to \____/

Thanks. Yes. The photo is of an earlier prototype of my DIY. In that photo, the jagged mesh opening for the aux foglights do not have any frame yet, and looks somewhat unpleasing. The transition on the lower side of the grille is also still a separate piece. Hopefully the final version would look much more presentable.
Back to the original topic of this thread though, if anyone else knows of a source for a reasonably priced grilles for the SG in north america, I'm sure many new XT owners (and non-XT owners like me) would be really interested in buying one. :)

That does look good for a DIY.
Like you, I'm trying to get a grille in the "V" pattern rather than the "A" pattern.
Ultimately, I'm looking for something that'd be an open "V" with only a single center crossbar that has the Subaru Symbol in the center, and probably a black plastic open-mesh rockguard behind it.
(something like the following)
__________
\____S____/
\________/
OR, as a second choice, something like the grilles on the New Legacy that's tips in at both top and bottom, with the one center line again
(something like)
/_____S____\
\__________/
I'll look at the names you've mentioned and see what's available...thanks again.
Eventually I'd like a wide-body kit, lowering & sport suspension kit and 17s, but that's a long ways off. ;)
EDIT: This is the one Syms grille I could find, and it's OK, but I dislike the hood attachment and the "spike" in the center...still, it's at least the right shape with the right angles...

A good starting point would be to get a hold of HyperRev's second volume on the Forester. Almost everything in that book is in Japanese, but it has pages of aftermarket parts for SF & SG forester, and iirc, has url links (and aftermarket part photos) for Syms, Corazon, Tommykaira, etc. If you're near a Japanese bookstore, they may even order it for you; I had a particular volume of Hyper Rev pre ordered through a bookstore chain called Kinokuniya. The other alternative is to get the Hyper Rev books by sending them (i.e. the publisher) a fax (in Japan). I've also seen some HyperRev books floating around in eBay.

I actually thought that the spike is not out of place. The hood attachment, afaik, can be left out if you choose that Syms grille. There may be a gap on the sides though.
Iirc, one Tommykaira grille for the SG looks somewhat like the one you posted:
__________
\____S____/

, that is if I understand your drawing correctly. It doesn't have that "s" lettering though, and has 3 instead of 2 bars.

Yeah the "s" is just my shorthand for where I'd like to have a Subaru badge, either USDM or JDM, probably the USDM 6-stars.

According to HyperRev vol75 (Forester #2), the grille, side pieces, and other aero parts shown there are the Subaru's Genome STi option.
The grille is called (see label on second picture below) "Sports Grille (Type II)", priced at 30000yen.

Minus the mesh & emblem, the grille looks almost like the corazon grille for the SG. Iirc, someone posted a photo of a corazon replica (for 14000 yen?). With shipping (if you can find the source), that would probably be about US$200, which is slightly less than an oem grille replacement purchased from SOA dealer's parts department, I believe.
Any idea how to get those goodies over here?
Best bet would be to ask a friend that happens to be in Japan to go to SOJ and purchase them.
How much?
I tried to look around in SOJ's accessory catalog for the SG (can be found at: http://accessory.subaru.co.jp/forester/catalog/index.html , see photo below) , and all I can find are the Type I & II sports grille, and a cross-sport option labeled "front grille". They are priced at 30000, 30000, and 33500 yen, respectively. Given that the cross sports grille (in your previous post) is a cross-sports original part, and given that it's not in the accessory catalog, I'm not sure how much they will cost. I'm guessing it won't be any lower than the three in the catalog.
And will they fit?
There seems to be no good reason why they won't make use of the same mounting points.

No problem. You know, at this rate, even if you're set on the Cross Sport grille, by the time you manage to get a contact to purchase it through SOJ, someone in eBay will start selling SG replica grilles for a lot less. It didn't take that long before replica and original aftermarket parts start pouring into north america once the my2002 WRX came in. (that is not to say that there weren't any aftermarket parts for subaru prior to that)
I wouldn't be surprised if the arrival of the FXT already have some vendors working on parts for the SG forester.

^ Yeah, that's actually my hope--that the timing is such that JDM OEM or replica parts should be coming to market in the near future--at least, if the F-XT can generate enough of a following to warrant it.

just FYI
japanparts.com replied to my inquiry, and they said they could get the JDM OEM parts and/or the JDM Accessory parts from the CrossSports for any USDM SG Forester.
No word on price yet, but they're checking.

Given the price of the other grilles in the catalog, I wouldn't be surprised if the total including shipping would be more than US$400.
If it ends up being less than US$100, I might as well drop my DIY grille effort (current state shown in picture below) and get a cross-sports one :)

japanparts.com replied to my inquiry, and they said they could get the JDM OEM parts and/or the JDM Accessory parts from the CrossSports for any USDM SG Forester.

Perhaps at this point the amount of work to get the forester part from there is not worth their profit; or they're still waiting for a reply from their Subaru contact/source?
