Painted Sideskirts
When you guys get the painted sideskirts for the MY02 WRX are you buying the ones from subaruparts.com or are you actually getting them painted somwhere. I was looking to get that done, but the 300 bucks for the already painted ones looks a little too expensive for me. Thats half a set of race tires! =o)
| Julian | 08-08-2001 10:22 AM |
It cost me $300 to get my sideskirts painted! I also got fog light covers, rear splats, and the orange front vent pieces painted...but $300 for side skirts that are already painted and shipped to your door? That doesn't sound bad at all.

300 bucks is not a bad deal at all thats what i payed too

wow
I just found them on subaruparts.com for $207!
I'm going to quit bitching and buy them now =o)

sugar is selling them 225 shipped and you get them in 2-3 days. I should be getting mine today. :) My friend got both the side skirts and front lip from her and it makes a world of difference. Makes the WRX look much less cheap and chintzy looking. I've got STi fog covers so I passed on the lip for now.

I don't want to come off sounding like a dolt. But I figure if I don't ask I'll never know.
Was that $207 EACH or for the PAIR. For the pair is a real steal.
Thanks ahead of time for the info.

Call TRi Tuning 610-759-7000
We should be able to do BOTH sidekirts for at max $150+shipping
I've had this done now for 2 months, the body shop uses dupont paint with flex agent and clear coat. i've washed the car, put it through many machine washes ...my car is dropped 2in and I have no chipping or any problems

SOA sideskirts ordered
Just completed the order on-line w/Subaruparts.com. I live in WA State so they ding ya for sales tax. With shipping and tax the total came to $247 and some change. The breakdown is $207 for painted skirts, $21 shipping and the rest tax. Seemed reasonable to me. Plus...kind of know myself too well because I'm too lazy to take the stock skirts to a shop to get painted.

Did you confirm that these underspoilers can be applied to the '02 WRX Wagon? I dropped them a message yesterday and hadn't heard back yet. If you would, let me know.
Thanks.

Yeah, the side underspoilers or side skirts are interchangeable with the sedan....in other words, fit either sedan or wagon. They are located under the front and rear doors between the wheels. This is the same design on either sedan or wagon. The front and rear underspoilers that are currently available on subaruparts.com are only for the sedan. Hope this helps :)

I recently received my side spoilers from subaruparts.com. They were $229 shipped to California. Well worth the money, and they look great. The car should have come from the factory looking this way, but I guess they knew what they were doing when they decided to sell them aftermarket; make more money.

i went to a bodyshop last saturday to see how much it will cost to paint the side skirts. the guy said not to get them painted because there is grain on the plastic which will cause the paint to chip or fall off after couple of monthes. he said if i still wanted them painted it will cost around 300 so i think i will order from subaruparts.com

Thanks for the info. I had trouble reaching them yesterday and after I left this message, I gave them another try and they picked up after the second ring and confirmed your info.
I noticed that you have a '02 Platinum Wagon too. After my purchase there's only one set left. Anyone else want one better hurry!

Stan:
Wow....one more set left after you??? Something told me to go ahead and order the suckers instead of sitting and arguing w/myself :p
Let me know how the installation goes once you get them. BTW, Jason, over in the NW chapter gave me a detailed description on how to install w/o going through some of the frustration he did w/getting the fasteners off the stock side skirts. Check it out.

Got em'
UPS just delivered my factory painted side skirts today. I ordered them last Thurs., so 3 working days is not bad. Turns out I knew the UPS guy who delivered them to me...old volleyball teammate. Anyhow, I'm going to try to get them installed before this Saturday's 3rd Annual West Coast Subaru Meet near Montesano, WA.

If you want to repaint the side skirts, what do you do with the RUBBER STRIP on the top of the side skirt?
Do you peel the whole thing off and paint under it?
Or do you just clear coat, etc, and paint over the rubber strip?
That rubber strip is a problem! What do you do with it?

Got my skirts via UPS this afternoon. Got home early after I tracked the package from the office! :p
Got home started dinner and while it was on the stove, unpacked the skirts. Damn, they are fine! I followed your rec' and checked out the instructions that Jason left. Sure enough it was a breeze!
Use a thin flathead screwdriver that fits snuggly in the slot, twist a few times and "pop" they come right off! The old skirt popped off with a little effort. I cleaned underneath it and around the whole area before putting the new one on.
BTW, there's no metal in those little "plug" at all. All plastic! Make sure you remove all six plugs and a screw in front before you pop the skirt off. I missed one of the plugs on the first one.
There is only one warning! The one "screw" that holds the front of the skirt to the base of the wheel well is also plastic... cheap plastic.
The first was easy, the second one was another story. There are no threads on these screws and they simply expand the anchors that hold it all in. When this screw was installed by the manufacturer, it was stripped and I ended up having to drill it out. I had to replace the screw/anchor from one on the wheel well lining located just above it.
I'm going to check with my local dealership to see if the shop floor might have some more or spares lying around. If not, it's off to Home Depot to look for another nylon/plastic set. I may have to spray paint them black.
Overall time including (removal, prep, clean, replacement and clean up) 45 minutes. I took my time.
Looks great! I would have to agree with another member who said, "This is how it should have looked when we picked it up." We should have never have to pay $200 for the painted ones or to have the black ones painted. Pix to follow...

The ones that came from www.subaruparts.com came with a rubber strip that color matched the skirt color very closely. I didn't even notice that strip. I can't speak for the members that had theirs painted, but IMO that rubber strip would seem to be problematic if you were going to paint it.

ne1 gonna explain what they did with the rubber strip>?
| topcover | 08-17-2001 01:31 AM |
From the looks of it, the strip allows the skirt to press against the body of the car to create a better seal and not to scrath the side. That's what it looks like to me.
