rally x tire pressure

so I'm looking for some input from the experienced RallyXers...... I'm running my first Rally X tomorrow in Monticello NY. What is a good tire pressure to run on dirt?

What kind of tires?

Kuhmo Ecsta ASX All seasons
205/55/16

say hello...i'll be the big guy with the camera

i would say 40 just to be safe. I bet you could run aroun 36psi but 40 you will be fine for sure. And you can always lower your pressure:) If your but comes out alot drop the pressure a bit.
| gc822 | 11-11-2005 07:50 PM |
yeah I ran 40psi @ all four at my last autoX, did very well. However first RallyX and want to make sure that I'm not running too high of a pressure for the dirt surface
| MarkA | 11-11-2005 08:06 PM |
High pressures will only cost you an almost un-noticeable amount of traction but will make it much safer for you as it reduces the risk of blowing a bead. I'll second the recommendation for at least 40PSI.

cool sounds good, anyone else have a recommendation?
thx guys BTW

I third the atleast 40 pounds recommendation.

I've run 38F/35R (cold) and never had a problem
| CombuSTIon | 11-11-2005 09:55 PM |
Start @ 40, work down slowly but do not drop below 35-36 or you will be tempting the fates for a blown bead.
| Rasmusson14 | 11-11-2005 10:02 PM |
^^^ @ the last rallyX I saw 3 or 4 blown beads as the ruts got larger through the day. You will have a blast though and have fun getting sideways.

I know this isn't going to be in time to help this weekend, and I'm going to be the odd-ball here, but...
Depending on how packed the dirt is and what kind of ruts/berms there are, I run anywhere from around 18F/20R up to about 28F/30R with my Hakka 1's. In about 6+ years of some serious Rally-Crossing I've NEVER popped a bead (had a valve stem rip in half, but that's another story  ).
If you don't believe that it's possible, check out my right-rear tire in this shot that Tensen took a few years ago:

Personally, it's one of my all-time favorite photos
Just my $.02 :)

very cool pic.......i am a compleate noob when it comes to rallyx
Why then do guys pop beads often? Is it just lack of skill? Where everyone kept doing was on a hard turn that had a deep bump right before the turn. If you didn't get on the brakes early enough you ran the risk of hitting the deep hole with your tires locked and turned.......then POP......rolly polly goes tire
BTW - very cool site. I wish I lived out there!!!!

Surface conditions, sidewall stiffness, sidewall profile, wheels...
I ran 38/36 at my first one and was fine. Did have to do the back-and-forth dance a couple of times. Never knew brakes could be so loud with a stone stuck between the pad and rotor, hehe.

Another vote for 40psi or above

40 or above? damn that seems high but try it out.
I rolled the bead on one last weekend and I think we were running like 35

I did blow a bead once at 40psi but never had a problem other than that (sliding around a hairpin).
I've just always did 40psi as the Rally-x instructors told us and I have been fine with that.

I usually run about 26-28 psi for rallyX tires (Kumhos and Pirelli's). The proper rally tires have stiffer sidewalls and so are far less likely to roll off the bead. Drop the pressure down!
| CombuSTIon | 11-13-2005 12:41 AM |
depends on tire mainly.. I had a set of BFG all weather and they just sucked butt @ any PSI (I tried anywhere between 35-50 with no success); but my current set of KDWS tires I just ran @ 31 PSI today without any issue.

thanks again guys, the Rally X was a blast, ran 40psi and then dropped to 38, next time def getting better tires.

I typically run with 37F 39R (on 15" gravel tires). I alter the pressure in the rears depending on how sideways I need to get....but it all depends on your suspension setup/adjustablility, tire type/size, surface, outside temps. etc.
pic link?

At the same event I ran 35 PSI in my old Hakka 1s and they were fine that way.
| ReZDoG | 11-14-2005 10:08 PM |
Hmm.. Back when I was running DOT legal tires.. I was running them at 45psi all around. with my 15inch yokos I run them at 32 all around. and the 14 Mich M4 25 PSI.. and my 15 tractionized yoko guardex Ice tires at 25-30 psi
