Rear wiper for coupe / sedan?
I've been looking for car with similar rear windows for the Impreza with rear wipers. The closest thing I've found were older VW GTi's and some type of Mazda. I'm thinking about one that will mount at the top of the window integrated into the glass. Then to cover up the arm make a top spoiler for the rear window. I think that would look sweet and be more efficient then having no wiper.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">Way ahead of you [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] Well, you can either A) go to all that trouble, use non-subaru parts that you hack in, and have to buy a roof spoiler OR B) wait about 2 months for my mods page on it, use all subaru parts, not have to hack it to get it in, etc, etc. Parts so far (minus the glass, which you can just drill a hole in for the wiper arm instead of buy) have come to $83 for a used wiper arm/motor assembly and a new set of controls from an Impreza wagon. The last obstacle I have is to drill the hole in the glass, which will have to wait for warmer weather [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Brian, how are you going to keep the glass from cracking?

You can use Carbon drill bits in order to get through the glass, at least I think they are carbon. My dad has a special set that cuts through glass he got at Home Depot.

When I was going to try this i stopped by a local auto glass place. They said you can't because of the way its tempered. The hole has to be there before they temper it or it will shatter after you hit the first bump. Any vibration after drilled will shatter. Someone please correct me if im wrong. I would really like to be wrong and do this[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">It will be tested on a piece of glass from the junkyard before I get anywhere near the rear glass of my car. It's safety glass, not tempered glass by the way... there's a sheet of plastic sandwiched in there. Besides, if you heat the glass after cutting, the hole would warp... the glass guy was full of it. It has to be possible, and here's my theory why. Way back when in the dim ages, my Spencer Gifts store underwent a remodel (yes, I was a Spencer Gifts store manager [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]). At any rate, the store got great big glass doors. Said doors was nothing more than a hardware kit until the local glass shop delivered the glass. The contractor then cut one inch holes in it for the door handles... I KNOW it can be done. Question is, can I find someone to do the drilling for me, or do I have to bite the bullet and do it myself????

Could someone just import the glass and the rear wiper over from Japan or some other country?
| MagicMT | 03-21-2001 10:49 PM |
I found this in my archives. This was taken at the Tokyo Auto Salon I believe.

Hello,
It sounds a bit like you would prefer a pro to do the cutting..... You could ring a few hot-rod shops (REAL shops ala CA), you might get a hit there on who to look for. Or like you said with the store doors... look up a few glass suppliers, they could probably give you a number or two. I have a feeling that you are going to end up driving a ways when you find someone that will do it. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/frown.gif[/img] You might get lucky though, I found the best body man in a tiny little railroad junction (read[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]ead) town that I drove by twice a week, in a ratty little brick building without a sign that did a superior job for half the price.
On a side note...
if you end up doing it your self, you might want to put some very thin (consistency) superglue or CA on the edges of the hole to keep the glass from starting to fog outwards from the hole. Old car glass does this when it starts to delaminate. Also you might want to really spend some tie polishing the inside edges so that there is a minimal chance that the glass starts to radiate a crack or fifty from the hole.
Never done it, just throwing out ideas,
Greg

The back glass is laminated? Cool, usually lami is only used for the windshield. If it's lami glass, then there should be some auto glass place around who could do it for you. I know we have a hot-rod place out here in Portland that does custom glass, and even some regular glass shops could probably do it. By the way, I used to work for PPG Auto Glass, delivering to glass shops all over, so I know a little about glass and the install shops. Tempered or lami, it should be able to be drilled, you just have to know how to do it right. Just bang that phone and get some leads [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] Good luck, and I really want to see this, as a rear wiper would be super sweeeeet!

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">It will be done, oh yes, it will be [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]. The rear glass can be brought over from Japan, but it's $550 to begin with, before shipping and insurance... I've checked. As for the wiper parts? You don't have to go to Japan to get them... there is a MUCH closer source for them [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]. My little secret until I'm done [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

Hello,
I don't know that it is laminated. I just assumed that it was from Norths previous post about the "tempering it later and having the plastic melt" that it was laminated with plastic.

i am a "PRO" Glass Man, its what i do for a living, its my trade. tempered glass CAN NOT have ANYTHING done to it once its been baked. So if the rear is Tempered it CAN NOT be drilled no matter what you do to it. Lami can be drilled with NO problem. If you need any help just drop me a email
| HondaH8er | 03-22-2001 07:18 PM |
Oops, my bad, I thought tempered could be drilled if you did it right [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/blush.gif[/img]

So the guy wasnt jerkin' myt chain. So how do we find out which it is [tempered or lami]? Will it be on the glass.

I'm sure you could order it as a replacment part for the 22B and have someone handy install it and have the final touches done at a good body shop! Good idea though!
| ^jynx^ | 03-23-2001 04:03 AM |
most tempered glass will have a tempered logo on it in the corner, but not all. Depending on the lami style it could most likly be glass/lami/glass, but its mostlikly glass/lami, it could be tempered/lami. If it has NO LOGOS only way to tell your self it break the glass. I DO NOT SUGGEST YOU BREAK YOUR OWN GLASS OR ANYONE ELSE'S.
a cool thing with tempered glass is you can drop it flat, or hit it VERY hard on the face of the glass and it wont break. But tap the edge with something hard(as small as a tea spoon) it will shater into a million peices
