I upset one of the Speed cameramen by swearing loudly when Pat came past at a pretty fast clip on Del Sur. I assume they can edit it out.

Yes! I think I'll be able to watch this. Helping my brother move into his new apartment that gets Speed. Lot of help i'm gonna be watching his TV.
Not having speed channel = not cool.

hahaha my memorial stint is the magic mtn stage on a harsh hairpin where most of the cars almost flew off! both of my buddies were swearing non stop when a car looked like it was going to fly there way off the cliff, hence they were standing with teh speed guys on the corner of the hair pin, the night stage
btw all three of us were working that portion, the reason for the nice seats

Was that a left turn right before the finish of the last friday night stage?
I almost drove off the mountain on that corner because there was a dum a@# camera men with is 10,000 watt light pointing right at us. That stupid light blinded me and my co-driver and we couldn't see where the turn was. We missed the turn and had the back up to keep going. I almost got out off the car to beat that guy a@#. I know of 6 cars who had the same problem because of that camera guy. The first 10 cars told the worker at the end of the stage, but that guy never moved.
I hope he got some good picture 'cause he almost killed us.

Just saw it a couple of hours ago. Pretty good racing. Pastrana seems likes he's having fun rallying. Too bad, no clip of Subiegal's car.

They need to dedicate more time to it!
30 minutes gives you highlights of the highlights.
Did anyone else see the NASIOC.com on Richards' car!
Natalie could be my co-driver anytime!!!
Way to go to both of the Richards!

brief msg from one my buddies
<Ryan>: "Yo bro! Ryan from Rim, saw the post on Subaru Of NA forums about the Last turn Magic Mnt. Funny ****! Tell your friend that we asked the timing control if the light was blinding the drivers and it took them 10 cars to get back to us! To let us know it was a problem! Sorry, by the way there where like 10+ cars who hit that dirt on the last hairpin after the speed guy turn off the light...."
haha yep one of my buddies who was up there with me

The Speed crew has been using lights on their cameras during night stages for nearly ten years. I have talked to quite a few drivers about it ( I used to work on the Speedvision crew) and I was told that the lights on the car more than overpower the cameramans light and that if they noticed the camera light (or flash's) it was because they were not concentrating hard enough. Perhaps it was different in your situation.
Regardless, IMO, your complaints are perhaps misguided. It is the organizers you should complain to for having night stages in the first place. Believe me Camera crews and Photographers hate having to shoot night stages and hate having to use the light, it looks terrible. It is difficult to try and produce a show out of rallies like Rim, STPR, Ojibwe which have a large portion of the event run at night. They have no choice but to use a light, otherwise the shot would be just a blur of headlights and you would not see the car. Dark cars going by would make sponsors unhappy
So unfortunately, as long as there is night stages, the camera lights are not going away anytime soon

It has been tried and did not work well. For one, the amount of lighting it would take is not easily portable and the camera crews are always on the move from location to location and time is limited, so lugging a generator is not practicle. Not to mention there is six camera guys out there and in the rural towns that rallies take place it would be impossible to rent that much equipment

Oh yeah gee whiz those rural towns with no equipment for rent, you know its so hard to find a place that can rent out lights and generators in Studio City, Burbank or Hollywood- all of which are about 45 minutes from RIM.
Stephan was right on in his complaint and your apologist attitude for the video crews insensitivity is inane.
Lights MUST be pointed down-stage for them to be any use at all, there isn't a camera light on the planet that is going to compete with 100W HID's that are being used as driving lights on the front of rally cars these days.
RIM had 3 stages run after sunset- they are all in a row and I don't think there was even much chance for crews to leapfrog the field. Harris was at our position, start of Magic Mountain, so it was someone else at the finish, someone who I think should have known better and had their lights aimed away from the competitors faces.
and a small generator would be fully pratical, I would hope that the video crews in the future will be a little more considerate of the competitors situation.

"Regardless, IMO, your complaints are perhaps misguided. It is the organizers you should complain to for having night stages in the first place.
You're kidding right? Why would a rally driver complain about night stages? Thats the whole point of the sport!!!! Any road, any conditions.any TIME!
In the middle of the summer in So Cal. I'd much rather drive a night stage than one at 2 in the afternoon when it's 98 degrees outside and 115 in the car...with dust! Most people actually drive faster at night because what you can't see doesn't matter!
And you don't "have" to shoot at night!! With 80% of the rally taking in place during the day, there's more than enough footage to fill a 30-minute TV spot, especially when you take into consideration the commercial breaks and all the interviews with Stephen! That leaves 15 minutes of actual rally footage!
Believe me Camera crews and Photographers hate having to shoot night stages and hate having to use the light, it looks terrible."
Were not there to look good! Were there for the challenge and because its fun, not to help photographers pay their rent! That being said, we all appreciate the experienced photographers that know where to stand and how to shoot the events without causing multiple drivers to almost end their event!!

I'm not complaining about having Camera filming us at Night. I'm use to the flash at night. The problem with this camera guy, he was facing us. Normaly you guys film from the side never from the front. we were comming down the hill in a strait ligne, he was at the end of that strait line pointing directly into my windsheild. Behing in the dust half the stage, he's light put a big glaire on our dirty windshield. My co-driver keep telling me Left2, Left2. I coulnd't see where to start braking because of that glaire.
That is why I was mad,'cause he was shooting from the front.
I realize that is a paine for you guys to be there at night freezing your butt. I really, really appreciate you behind there, and without you there will be no rally in US. But please don't shoot my car from the front at night.
Any way, the good thing they put the shoot on TV and it was pretty funny to see me missing the corner.
I don't want ot start a fight beetwen us and camera guys. We just need more comunication beetwen us. We need you to help us promoting our sport, not to hurt us.
Few week ago at Pikes Peak they ask us (driver) if we wouldn't mind having camera crew for night stages. We all said "no problem. as long as they don't shoot us directly from the front." Nobody did and it work perfect.

Oh yea. My sponsor (and the sponsors of a majority of us) would really be pissed off, since they're ususally local friends do us a favor more than anything.
Where are the roots of rallying? Any conditions, any weather, any time of day. Lets put it in all in a stadium during the day light so the beer drinking lazy public can sit in a air conditioned suite.
Enough said. Ask the drivers paying the entry fee and see what the majority want!

rallynutdon,
I did slow down. We were doing around 70 mph down that hill. If we didn't slow down, I woulded land at the Magic Mountain parc.
About the night stages. I like it. Like one guy said earlier, Rally is any condition at any time of the day.

I did slow down. We were doing around 70 mph down that hill. If we didn't slow down, I woulded land at the Magic Mountain parc.
Oh yeah gee whiz those rural towns with no equipment for rent, you know its so hard to find a place that can rent out lights and generators in Studio City, Burbank or Hollywood- all of which are about 45 minutes from RIM
Rim is the only event that is even close to someplace you can rent equipment like that, and regardless there is no budget to rent equipment, the show is produced on a shoestring budget and as I mentioned, lighting it does not work
Stephan was right on in his complaint and your apologist attitude for the video crews insensitivity is inane
How do you know, did you witness the incident?
there isn't a camera light on the planet that is going to compete with 100W HID's that are being used as driving lights on the front of rally cars these days.
Exactly, that is why all of the drivers I talked to said it was not a problem. And it is certainly no worse than getting the Sun in your eyes during the late day stages
RIM had 3 stages run after sunset- they are all in a row and I don't think there was even much chance for crews to leapfrog the field. Harris was at our position, start of Magic Mountain, so it was someone else at the finish, someone who I think should have known better and had their lights aimed away from the competitors faces
There are 4-5 camera guys out there
and a small generator would be fully pratical, I would hope that the video crews in the future will be a little more considerate of the competitors situation.
A small generator would not be practical because it would not be enough power to light an area big enough to shoot the cars, not to mention the fact that You would need lights like at a football stadium to produce enough light.
As I mentioned it was tried at Ojibwe last year. The problem is the lights only created a small pool of light that the cars passed through in a split second and there was nothing to shoot. With the light on the camera at least you can pan with the car and even then it still sucks.
You're kidding right? Why would a rally driver complain about night stages? Thats the whole point of the sport!!!! Any road, any conditions.any TIME!
I kind of meant that tongue and cheek with the point being as long as there is night stages and TV coverage there is going to be lights on the cameras
Not all rally drivers like driving at night, I know quite a few that don't
And you don't "have" to shoot at night!! With 80% of the rally taking in place during the day, there's more than enough footage to fill a 30-minute TV spot, especially when you take into consideration the commercial breaks and all the interviews with Stephen! That leaves 15 minutes of actual rally footage!
I don't shoot at night, for me it is a waste of time, it produces unusable photos.
But the problem is when you are hired to shoot certain cars night stages limit the amount of footage you can get, and if the car goes out in the night stages you have no footage at all. That is why I think the night stages would be better at the end of the rally, not the beginning.
Oh yea. My sponsor (and the sponsors of a majority of us) would really be pissed off, since they're ususally local friends do us a favor more than anything.

Were not there to look good! Were there for the challenge and because its fun, not to help photographers pay their rent!
Well, the sponsors who pay for the TV show would be pissed off and I am sure the drivers that that do have some sponsor support would not be too happy either
And with no TV show a lot of the drivers would be pissed off and there would be no sponsors at all
