I don't think he did much worse than any other of the Red Bull and Torro Rosso drivers

If he leaves, Jeff Gordon needs to go to Williams or McLaren, otherwise we need to fight to keep him in F1. We don't need another 20 years to go by w/o an american!

That's the thing. I thought he did extremely well this season; he was consistently better than Liuzzi, who had a year of experience over Scott. It doesn't make sense to me either to put Doornbos in the Toro Rosso when he's only had 3 races of experience this past season. Doorbos could have done much better than Scott in the last three races since he was in a better car, but he was only able to do marginally better.
I definitely want to see what Scott can do next year with the new car and new engines.

Since Torro Rosso is trying to be independent from Red Bull Racing, they need all the help they can get. And the rumor is that that Doornbos brings in more sponsorship money than Scott Speed. Which is reason enough for Speed to potentially lose his seat.

The European impression is that Luizzi did really well compared to Speed....ie qualifying higher...the only reason Scott finishes better is cuz Liuzzi always spins.....
Altho I think Scott did better than Liuzzi this season...he always makes lightning starts like Sato....

I agree.
Toro Rosso is not hurting for cash and he has done nothing to lose his seat (other then cuse out DC down under). I hope he stays and helps build STR up. I am not a huge Doornbos fan anyways.

Aren't there supposed to be 4 or 5 more teams next year? If he's fast and can bring money, he'll have a drive. Maybe I'm thinking of 08.
Besides, didn't Red Bull work for years to develop a US driver for F1? I don't think they'll drop him after one season unless there is an even quicker American to take the seat.
Now, will Hamilton have an F1 drive next season?

There will be one more team, Prodrive, in 08. Until then, no new teams, unless they end up replacing existing teams.

They're both young at least. Remember da Matta made it to F1 from CART. Rahal is probably going to GP2 in 08, he was going to go next year but the team he was going to go with folded or something.

Hope Speed returns next year then!
Still, Liuzzi got 1 point this year, and points are all that matters. Besides, always not advancing into round 2 of qualifying looks bad for Speed.

Well Speed scored a point, too... it just got taken away.
Liuzzi's point came at Indy after, what, 13 cars eventually retired? Not very impressive if you ask me. All he was good at was starting at the back and not getting involved in the massive pileup at turn 1.

Nothing official, but it sounds like Doornbos isn't even in the cards.
Berger: Doornbos not coming to STR
11/11/2006
Scuderia Toro Rosso boss Gerhard Berger says he has no intention to sign Red Bull's Robert Doornbos and he has no idea were the stories are coming from.
The stories are of course coming from the Doornbos camp. As Planet-F1 published on Tuesday the 7th the young drivers spokesperson stated that possible talks were underway and that things may be settle within the next month.
Berger has often hinted that he was likely to retain both Scott Speed and Tonio Liuzzi for the 2007 season but poor showings in the last couple of round of the 2006 season have reportedly not pleased the Austrian team boss
With his Red Bull connection Doornbos may well be considered a likely STR option but Berger has denied any move for the 2006 Red Bull test driver.
"I know nothing about these rumours," Berger told Austria's Salzburger Nachtrichten newspaper.
"It's true that we haven't confirmed our drivers for 2007, but that is because we were busy with other things in the last few weeks.
"Now that the engine question has been cleared, we can think about it, but the choice won't be made officially until after Didi [Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz] and I get together."
Another factor heavily in the favour of Doornbos is of course the great sponsorship deals the Dutchmen bring to a team, but even taking into account Berger said the move was not on cards.
"There will be no surprises, but the one thing I can say is that Robert Doornbos plays no role in our considerations. And his sponsorship will not either."

Doornbos intent on staying in F1 next year
15/11/2006
Although Robert Doornbos's hopes of driving for the Toro Rosso outfit were recently dashed, the Dutchman is nonetheless hoping to remain in Formula One next season.
According to reports, Doornbos's management was in talks with Red Bull's junior team, Scuderia Toro Rosso, about the possibility of him replacing Scott Speed in 2007.
However, any chance of that came to an end when STR co-owner, Gerhard Berger, claimed to have heard nothing about the rumours.
He also hinted that it was only a matter of time before the team announced that both Speed and Tonio Liuzzi would be staying on for another year.
But despite that blow to his chances of racing next season, Doornbos is still hoping to remain in Formula One.
"For next year my focus goes out to F1, only!" the Dutchman told the official F1 website.
Doornbos will now be hoping to extend his deal with Red Bull Racing as their official 2007 test driver having filled the role during the 2006 season before being promoted to race-driver following the dismissal of Christian Klien.
"I think I can look back at quite a great season, starting 2006 as Red Bull's test driver and finally finishing this year as a race driver!" he told the official F1 website.
"After having raced eight races for Minardi last year, me and my management took the early and wise decision to go testing for Red Bull instead of chasing a race seat for 2006 in a smaller outfit. And it paid off!"
"I grabbed this opportunity with both hands and had three strong races. Unfortunately we couldn't score points, but I was still able to out-qualify DC (David Coulthard) in events. Not so bad at all, isn't it?"
I think Vit is massively talented and skilled as a racer. He did score a point last year too in one of only 3-4 races. At Indy this year he could have scored another point but it was DC in front of him. He challenged several times into but DC closed the door and Vit knows better then to take out "Big Bull".

I think RB is being smart by keeping the lineup they have. Sure, there are other drivers who might be a little bit faster and bring in more money, but having the same driver lineup two years in a row will help a lot.
I am obviously biased, but I think Scott will win the battle next year. A lot of the tracks were new to him this year and he was still more consistent than Vitantonio. With a little bit of development I think the car will be better next year, and minimally having the same engine as everyone else (sort of) will help too. Having the engine developer down the street will help issues.
