Splash guards I made look similar to Prodive but cost less
I bought Impreza splash guards from my local dealer.
I went to work trimming the fronts to fit. I took my time and this is what I got

Man, my car doesn't get dirty to save it's own life. The flaps stop EVERYTHING.

I don't think its as simple as a template.
I'm beat right now :(
I will do a complete write up on exactly what I did and share some tips ASAP

Thanks WKW for the positive comments

InfamousDX 02-19-2004 02:47 AM

I did the regular Impreza splash guards as well, but yours are cut WAY cleaner than mine. Nice job.

you can order all types of Subaru flaps from Subie Gal's website.

Great idea! Are we getting templates anytime soon?
chewbakarox 02-19-2004 11:52 AM

cky - GREAT job on the flaps. i've seen others who have trimmed the oem ones, and they didn't come close to being as clean as yours. please post a more detailed write up when you have time!! thanks.

I want to snap pictures of the tools I used and include them in my write up.
Thanks -Scott A.
migs76 02-19-2004 01:53 PM

now are these more for aesthetics or are they actually as functional as huge mammajamma mudflaps.
jagcars26 02-19-2004 02:32 PM

I did the same on my STi,, not hard to do,just take your time when trimming.Take a little out at a time to get a snug clean fit.
I used a good razor knife and a white china marker.

Rudy

btw, they work very well, considering i have a black car they really made a difference up front.

The flaps on my Legacy keep me clean. The only time I've gotten muddy was when I spent the day down at the river after a big flood doing some cleanup work. Mud was alll over the place. You basically had to skate across a mud hole to get to the parking lot.
djerickd 02-19-2004 03:17 PM

Do you guys think they would hold up to paint (with flex agent)

The back side prob. would with some flex, and some adhesion promoter. Ill let you know after I paint mine come spring :)

FWIW guys this is already on Scoobymods, its basically a slow process of cutting, and fitting, and repeating.

for those who did this mod, did you use a razor knife, dremel, or something else? TIA.
OneManArmy 02-20-2004 02:35 PM

anyone have the specific part number.

I want it for an 04.

I went to the dealer and they tried to sell me these really expensive things like...$95.

maybe subygal can way in. Get me the right number I don't know.
03WRXMA 02-20-2004 02:39 PM

Use a dremel.

And the 04 and 02/03 are the same part :)

For the mudflaps? No they aren't!

2002/2003 = J1010FE220
2004 = J1010FE260

The new ones are more expensive, too! ($99.95 list vs. $96 list)

I dunno, above someone posted they put them on an STi so...

Whats the difference? Do 04 base imprezas have side skirts like a WRX?

Nope. An 04 RS does not have sideskirts.
djerickd 02-20-2004 04:05 PM

ok thanks!

The 02/03 and the 04 fronts should be the same, but the rears will be different - the rear bumper was changed on the 04's (that's also the reason there aren't prodrive flaps for the 04's) - doing the 04 RS or TS flaps for an STi would be just like the WRX, except you would trim to fit the STi sideskirts rather than the WRX - the rears are unchanged in both applications (the rear bumper is the same on all 04 sedans and all 04 wagons (though the sedan and wagon rears do differ from one another)
cky211 02-24-2004 07:32 PM

Sorry for the delay. The camera was gone for 3 days. OK hear is how I did it and what I used.

First grab 8.5x11 paper and something to support from behind like a clipboard or cardboard. Hold it where your splash guard will go and trace the outline with a pen. Keep every thing very still use your hand and push off the tire for support if nessacey.
When your sure you have the outline right carefully cut it out with scissors.

I lined up the part of the paper with the part of the splash guard that didn't need to be cut and taped the paper to the guard.

This part is a little tricky. You will see that you have to bend the paper in order for it to touch the splash guard. I held it down so it made contact and used the paper as a stencil and I grabbed some spray paint (I used silver) I put a light coat on to mark what needed to be cut.
Bending the paper to the shape of the splash guard throws things off a little bit but thats OK it will get you close.
Remove the paper stencil and keep for the other splash guard.
You should now have a clean line where you can cut. It turns out that in bending the paper to fit you end up with extra material to grind out later which is OK if you want them to look nice. Clean any over spray with brake cleaner or acetone.

After you cut out the excess material you are ready to start test fitting on the car. I had my car up on stands with the wheels off.
You will see the 2 holes in the splash guard and where they line up on the car. Use the 2 holes to test and look for what parts need grinding. The tools I used see pictures below they remove material quickly so I would slowy grind away and then test and then grind. Moves along slow but is worth in the end if you just take your time. When test fitting put masking tape on car where splash guard contact paint to protect it. After I got close I removed the sideskirt which is necessary for the mounting hardware which is included in the kit along with instructions. With the sideskirt off I bolted it on and then drilled the hole for the 3rd mounting bolt (more info on that below) Having the guard on the car with the sideskirt off helped me see the last final plastic that needed to be removed. After you get the 3rd hole drilled and mounting hardware done remove guard and replace sideskirt. One more tip if you get real close and you can feel the guard has to flex a little to line up the holes use a heat gun and warm the trimmed area to make it fit

The dremel bits I used. Sand paper by hand is good for cleaning up rough edges.

I don't have a dremel so I used this airtool w/ adapter

When you cut away the extra plastic you remove the 3rd mounting bolt.
I added one (see pic w/arrow below) The bolts were just there in the garage part of a theft proof license plate kit. They are 1 inch long and have plastic lock nuts which is important you don't tighten them down all the way the splash guard has a slight gap from the fender liner. The hole is very easy to drill and goes through the plastic fender liner and doesn't hurt anything. Its located 1.900 inches up from the bottom of the splash guard and just center it on the bump. I used a spring center punch to get the hole started.

Take your time

When I was halfway through this I got the idea of a much easier way to do this. Take your sideskirt off then direct bolt on the front splash guard. Leave side skirt off or straight cut side skirt where it meets splash guard and reinstall it. Just a crazy idea I had :)

I'm not a fan of things that are put on for looks and don't work.
I put a lot of work into these and I know they are small but I hope they stop any future rock chips. I did get some rocks chips out having fun on unpaved roads before the guards. Here is a picture of my car after going down a VERY muddy road the other day

Those are interesting. I guess it just depends what protection you want and where you drive.

If you could get the hardware kit from the Impreza splash guards I think it would work to mount the ones pictured above

-Scott
Lam 03-14-2004 04:52 PM

actually, you don't really need any hardware kit to install these on tight. i just used some flat head stainless bolts from home depot and mount them on using the "factory" holes on my fenders and bumper. it looks something like this when is mounted.
