Steps to a trunk swap (STi and WRX) part 1

Steps to a trunk swap (STi and WRX)
Hey all. Been trying to search "trunk swap" in the forums, and I can't get it to work for 2dys now, so figured it was time to start a thread.

Meeting up with an '04 WRX owner to swap trunklids and spoilers. While I've read that it's a fairly simple undertaking, I've no idea of the steps involved and was hoping someone who had done this before could educate me.

So, what are the steps involved? I know we need to swap lock cores (what's involved with that? any special tools necessary?) We also need to swap trunk torsion springs, and I'd recently seen a post from someone who was having trouble with this step. Any heads-up for me on that part in particular?

The wiring for the brake light.....is this just a male/female clip I can undo and then reconnect? Can anybody think of anything else that may trip us up? ANY and ALL help would be tremendously appreciated.....and I tried to search......he's driving down from Quebec (!!!) and me up from CT (cause I felt bad about the guy driving 7hrs+) and I'd like to do it as quickly as possible and head home.....don't want any aggravation in the middle of a 6+hr roundtrip road trip. TIA!

there is a post on this somewhere - but since the search doesn't seem to be working:

1) disconnect wiring harness for 3rd brake light - on passenger side trunk hinge.

2) remove clips surrounding glow-in-the-dark trunk release handle (inside trunklid) and remove the handle itself.

3) loosen all four bolts that hold the trunklid to the hinge bars - make sure you have somebody helping with this step because the trunk will smash into the back window if you let it fall. Note that the STi trunk is significantly heavier than the WRX trunk due to the gigantor spoiler.

4) with the trunk off of the car, inside the cavity exposed by removing the glow-in-the-dark escape latch, remove the c-clip holding the lock mechanism to the latch (it will shoot off - try not to lose it).

5) with the c-clip removed, gently slide out the black metal clip holding the lock mechanism. Swap locks between trunks, insert black metal clip, attach escape mechanism with c-clip, then reattach glow-in-the-dark handle.

now for the fun part:
6) remove the torsion bars (things that push the trunklid up when you open it). One obviously needs to come out before the other, and assembly is the reverse of removal. THE STI TORSION BARS ARE MUCH STIFFER THAN THE WRX BARS. Be very careful not to pinch your fingers when removing these bars. There is a clip on the STi that holds the intercooler sprayer water line to the torsion bar that needs to be removed. There are hooks on each end that the bars latch into, as well as notches in the middle that they are held in. Have someone hold the hinge up, then bend the bar such that it comes free from the hooks that engage the bar to the hinge. Just be sure to assemble them in the correct order.

7) bolt trunklids back on to desired cars, and reattach 3rd brake light wiring harness (and intercooler sprayer hose to torsion bar on STi) and you're done.

Hey man - thanks so, so much. Really appreciated. We're not doing this til Saturday, but here I am worrying about it already, on a Monday morning. :) This was exactly the kinda response I was hoping for.

I think if the STi springs are too much a hassle I can just advise the new owner to hit up a dealership, where they'll have the spring tool.....I'll do the same if the WRX springs are proving to be too much of a headache.

If anyone else can think of anything to add please sound off! And once again, jmlmr2, thanks greatly for taking the time and effort for that post. You've helped me out a good bit. :)

The tension rods was a pain and the dealers I called didn't want to help with it. Maybe you'll have better luck with the dealers around your area. Anyhow, I did a swap awhile back and the person whom I did the swap with discovered that the tire removal tool that comes with the car works very well in placing back the tension rods. We used the tool as a lever to push the two rods back in place. Once you do one rod, the rest is easy. Also, you have to get into the trunk to really get enought leverage and to see what you are doing. I would swap the tension, or your trunk wouldn't open correctly. Good Luck!!

#1 ... ^^^ Excellent description ... Way to give out accurate useful info ...
#2 ... Did the trunk swap myself two weeks ago, and it was really, really easy ... Took me about 30 minutes tops to swap both trunk lids ... Getting that little C-clip back on was a PIA though ... I removed my springs at my house though, just to try it out prior to meeting up, and they were definately difficult, but only in the regard that putting them back in was hard to twist them around, more so on the STI springs ...

Good luck ...

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone kind enough to sound off on this. Some well organized, helpful info here and it's much appreciated. You're all due for some positive karma. :)

Out of curiousity... when switching trunks how do you deal with the difference in key lock on the trunk?
gravel 05-06-2005 10:53 AM

look 2 posts up in the quote, or 5 posts up - you swap the lock cylinder.

anyone know is it true that the 02 and 03 trunklid wont fit 04+????
shemoves 05-06-2005 09:33 PM

I can't get the c-clip off the lock core...is there a trick? It'll twist a bit, but wont come out.
crashtest sonny 05-07-2005 12:37 PM

theres a lil tab on the C clip..just bend those..and pull.

buzz367 12-02-2005 06:08 PM

i try and pull it apart but it doesnt come apart
i've tried prying with a screw driver but to no avail.do you have to do anything but pull?!?! what the hell have i been doing then?
specialev 12-02-2005 08:39 PM

Are we talking about the plug itself or the little clips that hold the harness to the deck lid support? If you can't get the plug apart, take it to a professional and have them do it ALL for you. However, the little clips that hold the harness to the frame are kind of a pain. I was able to get one off with a great deal of effort, but I just ended up breaking the rest off. I think they are a one use only type item. Their cost is tabulated in pennies and are available from the dealership.
buzz367 12-02-2005 11:00 PM

im not sure i know what you're talkin about with the "harness" and stuff.
WillysPU 12-03-2005 12:55 AM

Needs a trunk monkey
subywrx 12-03-2005 12:58 AM

He mean the brake light harness for the spoiler.
specialev 12-03-2005 03:19 AM

Yup ^^^^^^^^

A wire harness, in this case, is only two wires held in a splittable plastic conduit. The harness is held to the rails by evil little plugs that don't come out unless by act of congress that support the deck lid and is routed back to a two prong wiring terminal.

Are you having trouble with evil little harness plugs or the two pron wiring terminal?

Just an update. I realize this is an old thread but you do not need to remove the c-clip to take out the lock core. I found out the hard way when I was re-installing the core on my new trunk. Simply put the tab on that connects the lever to the latch, then install the c-clip. The lock core assembly, including the c-clip, will slide through the hole with no problem.

Hopefully this saves some headaches with that stupid clip
05_WRX_805 08-27-2012 02:55 PM

how do i remove the lock? i cant figure out how to do that
LiCelsior 08-28-2012 12:30 AM

There is a metal clip that holds the lock to the trunk. Remove the metal clip and it will slide out.
