STi in Drive Thru Car Wash part 1

hhhugale 02-01-2006 01:26 AM

STi in Drive Thru Car Wash
My car has been dirty for the longest time and I have had no time to clean/wash it. I refuse to wash the car in winter temps. Would it be safe to take it in one of those drive thru car washes at the gas station? It has an STi wing from a trunk swap and I am worried if the wing gets damaged or something.
psychoskip 02-01-2006 01:27 AM

hand wash maybe?
IIdiceII 02-01-2006 01:31 AM

yea I wouldnt take it through with an STi wing. Just handwash it :D
chaoticSTi 02-01-2006 02:07 AM

I think it will make it dude...seriously everything will be okay
saejosh 02-01-2006 02:09 AM

can we say brushless car wash
thsiao 02-01-2006 02:17 AM

If you want serious scratches/swirls on your paint then go ahead... Subaru paint was not made to endure harsh environments like those hahahaha. Just hand wash it at home with microfiber towels.
Flat4 STI 02-01-2006 02:19 AM

I take mine through the touchless drive thru all the time.

I would never go through the one with the brushes though. You never know who went through before and what they left on the brushes.
MattDell 02-01-2006 02:21 AM

It's not so much the rear wing I'd be concerned about, it's the paint. I made the mistake with my last Subaru of taking it through a drive-through car wash and the paint was never the same after that.

Seriously, either find a touchless car wash or just spray it down quickly at a regular car wash until you have the time to wash it properly.

Most definitely brushless...and i'm not sure if it's true or not (heard it from my chem teacher) but i heard that those places recycle most of the water they use...thus dirt and such can get put back onto your car...but then again he was kinda crazy, so it probably isn't true, but anyway the brushless is safer for the paint and fixtures (side mirrors, wing, so on and so forth)...less risk=happy subie
hystikal 02-01-2006 02:35 AM

NO!!1!11 Do not take your car to those automatic gas-station type washes!!! You will get tons of scratches from the brushes themselves, and they recycle their H2O as well.
STi-JDM 02-01-2006 03:05 AM

handwash it... I never bring any of my car thru the car wash machine... it will ruin your paint...

This site has a very interesting view on how auto car washes may actually be safer for your paint - http://www.jaxkarwash.net/safety_of_carwashing.htm
cmorrow001 02-01-2006 09:58 AM

I think its stupid how everyone says not to take it through a car wash...its a car. It can handle it. Do you not take it out in the rain becuase rain water is far from pure? I take it through the wash when I don't have time to properly wash it and in the summer I do it by hand.
genkidama20 02-01-2006 11:09 AM

Here, take some advice from a slack pompus over paid american citizen:

If you're too lazy to wash it by hand, then take it to the auto wash. It's there so couch potatoes like us can take advantage of it. I've probably taken my car to the auto wash 10+ times now. It's too friggin' cold out. Just make sure you give it a good hand wash and wax every now and then so that your paint is well protected.
dwigger2000 02-01-2006 11:22 AM

yea dont take it through the gas station car wash. I work at a car dealership and i wash cars all day with the type of machines that are used at gas stations. it will scratch the hell out of your car. so go ahead and take it through the gas station car wash and be ready to pay some extra money to have it buffed and waxed. after seeing how bad those things scratch up cars i will never take my car through one of those things again.

That's an intresting study. There are many types of cloths and brushes used in auto car washers. I wonder which type of carwash they went through...

For those of us who take extra the extra effort/time to maintain our cars, auto-washes are a sure way to ruin a nice finish. ..obviously there are others who are perfectly satisfied with the results they get at their local car wash.
This site has a very interesting view on how auto car washes may actually be safer for your paint - http://www.jaxkarwash.net/safety_of_carwashing.htm
interesting indeed:
The Hand Wash
Without having been told the why's or the wherefore's, four men were given the chore of washing four of the test cars by hand. Each person was to do as thorough a job as possible. Since there were four people involved, and since each person used their favorite "tools", together they presented a cross-section of various hand washing techniques commonly used by average car owners.
The problem with this experiment is that the average car owner either doesnt care or lacks the know-how, motivation, tools, etc. to properly maintain the finish on their car.

They need to add a professional hand detailer to there list of hand washers. And I don't mean the "professional" at the local detail center.
Kean 02-01-2006 12:11 PM
They need to add a professional hand detailer to there list of hand washers. And I don't mean the "professional" at the local detail center.
...or at least a car owner who knows how to do it properly.

I agree... There are a lot of "professionals" out there who have no clue or are no better than most of us ametuer/enthusiasts. With the proper tools, products, knowledge, time and effort, it not beyond the skills of most owners. .....and experience just makes them better.

this doesn't apply...as the previous commenters have proven thus far, STI owners and WRX owners aren't your "average" owners who take their vehicles through any old car wash. the experiment IS valid and applicable to the people reading this post, otherwise they wouldn't have taken the time to read and post

I just had a problem with the suggestion that car washes were safer than hand washing which is why I mentioned the way the experiment was conducted.
smooth_ej20 02-01-2006 03:59 PM

dude, just take it through a brushless wash and dont skimp. get the delux so you can at least get a spray on liquid wax. this offers some protection untill it warms up enough to fully detail it by hand. and for future reference, anyone who washes their car at home, the water from your hose is ten times more disgusting than the water at a car wash thats been re-treated so think about that.
volleybrad 02-01-2006 04:21 PM

Just be careful in those car washes that have wheel guides not to rub against them and get curb rash.

On a side note - there is a car wash not from from where I work that Tim Allen owns (Your Car Wash) that has all lambswool brushes. :-D
JBLU24 02-01-2006 04:25 PM

I'm lazy to wash mine too but I just go to the Hand Car wash places around here-
i wouldnt go to those automated drive thru ones though as stated 8585756 times u WILL get swirl marks!
Imprezive_04 02-01-2006 04:37 PM

I use a touchless car wash every now and then when its real cold to get the salt off the car and the under carriage. It doesn't compare to hand wash, but it does the trick when its cold or if I didnt get a chance to hand wash it over the weekend.
Rex_Guy 02-01-2006 04:37 PM

+1 for touchless car wash
chaoticSTi 02-01-2006 05:29 PM

oh also do not forget this option

JUST DON'T WASH THE CAR
RChampion 02-01-2006 05:53 PM

I've taken my car through my friend's car wash atleast a dozen times. Never harmed it once. Although, it did bend my front plate a little.
holland_patrick 02-01-2006 06:44 PM

I take car of my caar well and DO know how to polish it out right and keep it sealed up in the winter. I also take it though the Tunnel washes after a snow storm to get the salt out of the under cariage. I would never take it to the Spiny brush kind.. it's inviting damage to the paint.
nhmtns 02-01-2006 10:19 PM

I laugh at all the people who freak out about their paint. My car gets blasted by sand and salt all winter long.

I touchless wash or nothing. I don't have time or weather to care about it any more than that. It's windshield and hood were sandblasted when I got it. Though from five feet or more it looks good enough for me.

I will undoubtedly claybar and wax a few times once winter breaks in a couple months.

I'm working on my PHD in Carwash Fundamentals at the University of Texas... doesn't sound like a good pick-up line.

The advantage of the touchless wash is that it blasts all the tens of pounds of ice off. It actually hit 15 today. The real winter is in Fairbanks tho so I cant say much.
99 rs 02-02-2006 09:20 PM

There IS a third option. Go to a coin wash that's indoors and spend half your money. You can get the wand any place you want AND you could get it in the wheel wells which the automatic one will probably neglect. Majority of the people are very ignorant. They think if there windows and side panels are clean then they're good. Then you look at their wheel wells and they're just packed with snow.
wrb2006sti 02-03-2006 12:19 AM

i always worried that the blow dryer(the kind that moves and has the wheels on it)
would band the sti wing.

Brushless car wash!! or they have heated pull in and wash with a brush and spray gun type up here they work good
Brushless car wash!! or they have heated pull in and wash with a brush and spray gun type up here they work good
You don't even have to use the brush. Just run over your car slower with the wand. That way, no swirls. And if your gung-ho on using the brush, then spray the dirt off with the wand first.

Glad at least one other person uses this kind of wash. It's cheaper too. Maybe it's just a Canada thing. To get out of your car when you wash it (if you can't do it at home).
ittybitty_STI 02-03-2006 10:55 AM

Yeah i only take my WRx through a brushless drive thru we have like 1-2 of the brush drive thru here in Vermont. Just some Nice high powered Jet Water!!!With the Tri-Colored Foam!!! 12$$ for a full spray on wax,tri-colored foam and a under carrage wash! pretty good deal in good degree weather.
