Subaru World Rally Team selects BFGoodrich tyres for 2007
30 November 2006
The Subaru World Rally Team announced today that it will use BFGoodrich tyres for its 2007 World Rally Championship campaign.
The team will first use the BFGoodrich tyres on a seven-day development test in Spain and France after the last round of the championship in Wales.
Subaru World Rally Team managing director Richard Taylor said:
Of course, were very much looking forward to working with BFGoodrich. It will certainly be interesting to go head-to-head with our competitors on the same rubber as, up to now, we have been unable to accurately benchmark our performance. At the same time, this announcement brings to an end a very successful partnership with Pirelli and Id like to express my gratitude to them for all of their efforts since 1994. All of our 46 WRC wins with the Impreza have been with Pirelli tyres and the company has been instrumental in helping us to six World Championship titles.

I was going to blow a gasket if they decided to stick with Pirelli. I used to be a huge Pirelli fan but I think so much of their struggle has come from the tires.

I've heard a lot of thier problems this year were due to diffs that overheat but can't be changed under homologation rules till the end of the year. Tires alone aren't the problem for Subaru, but hopefully they'll all be addressed for next year.

Did Pirelli bow out of the WRC for 2007 or are they still in it until the one manufacturer rule for 2008? If they are still in it, has any teams announced that they are going with Pirelli?

I thought that it was common knowledge that SWRT planned on ditching Pirelli about midway through this season. I guess we finally have an official announcement here.
It was a good run, Pirelli, but you're too far behind the curve.

Praise the lord.
Finally we'll be able to win again.

   Yes, yes, yes. I actually didn't think it would happen. Perelli = slower = more pushing = more problems. hopefully we learned a lot more then just pirelli's are slower then bfgoodriches this season, and can make more positive changes and get back into the competition for next year.

I thought Pirelli was dropped for next year by the series and everyone was going to run Michelin...err BF Goodrich.

I could've sworn that someone was planning on campaigning next season with Pirelli sponsorship (possibly Henning). It would seem odd to run a Pirelli sponsored car shod with Michelins.
Edit: It was Gigi Galli.

All manufacturers are going to one tire make as to the new rules.
This PR is a non-event.

Yeah blaming an entire season on bad tires, is just silly.
Yes Pirellis cost SWRT a few places in a rally, but I don't think there were the deciding factor in this season.
Getting good rubber under then is a good step in the right direction, but there is still alot more that needs fixing.

Thanks for the correction.
Still, Pirelli singlehandedly rendered SWRT useless in Germany-spain-corisca.

yeah, the Pirellis were a glaring flaw amongst many for the 2006 season. It was painful to watch the commentators talk to Petter about what he thought about the tires, you could see him wanting to say "they suck ass" but he couldn't.
| Chromer | 12-01-2006 07:26 PM |
The tires didn't break the gearshift... Twice. They didn't break the differentials, didn't take out the power steering, didn't break the halfshafts, and weren't on the wrong side of the road around a blind corner on a transit...

Exactly.
Pirelli didn't put Petter in the trees in Finland..didn't put him in the trees on shakedown in germany.
You can only blame the tires for soo much...

When you lose that much time just due to tires, you tend to push more, and harder where you shouldnt, and often wreck.
| LastResort | 12-01-2006 08:59 PM |
All the power, steering and brakes will do you no good if you are talking to the road through the worlds crappiest tires.
