trunk lights

ok, well I got a 02 2.5rs and the best thing about it is....IT HAS NO f_cking trunklight...and since I am a teenager and I only prowel at night it is kidna a neccesity for me to see what is in my trunk. So I was thinking of getting a neon blue light and somehow wire it in...any suggestions? how have you all done it...what other ways are there to light it instead of that annoying "touch light" and or flashlight....post pictures if you can..thanks

Try the OEM light. subaruparts.com sells it for cheap.
-S- 07-05-2001 02:51 AM

um... well, i broke my oem one on the first week of ownership. i would try to look into a junk yard and find other ones (ie, the vw jetta ones, which are integrated into the trunk moulding. all you have to do is cut a hole somewhere)

I can't beleive they didnt put a trunk light in the 02 RS. the WRX has one standard!! How cheap is that. Was is that much of a cost saving issue? What else did they skimp on in the RS?
-S- 07-05-2001 11:05 AM

are you serious? my '02RS has it... which i then proceed to break off:D
DoctorNick 07-05-2001 11:25 AM

ok, well I am super poor and when i bought the car out of highschool (I am 18) it was after 3 years of hard hard work for FED EX(2yrs), Mc Dougal Littell computer tech(1year), Highschool computer help(4 yrs) and intern at various recording studios(4yrs) in chicago...All that 5.15 and hour cash went into stait out buying it for 17k...At evanston subaru my newest bud found me the cheapest one he could find that was in the US...someone ordered a bonestock one and then when it got here he canceled it...so i came across it for cheap, yet no options cept the dam wing and power windows. I guess I got the only one with out a trunk light ehh?

so can you guys help me with this..how can I wire in a neon light into the car or would that kill the fuse system of the car?

Me too!!

I don't have a trunk or under the hood light for my 02 RS either. Cheap man...really cheap.
pdlindor 07-05-2001 01:51 PM

Mine didn't come with a light either. I ordered an OEM one from subaruparts.com. We'll see when that arrives. I ordered it 5 days ago, and my order is still not found when I query it on their site... :)

Kind of a weird omission, since the wiring for the trunk light is there...whatever.

Like Darwin said, get the oem trunk light from http://www.subaruparts.com .. it plugs right in and is very cheap (alot cheaper than some neon light.)

Us Americans must have night vision or something... seems the only people in North Ameria who get trunk light on their RS's are Canadians. Maybe it's darker up north or something. Anyway, my trunk light is already on its way from Subaruparts.com:D
-S- 07-06-2001 01:47 AM

well, its ok. apparently the US spec '02 RS has leather steering wheel, leather shift knob, and leather e-brake grip.

canadians get plastic (what, they figured it so cold that no one will get sweaty palms up here? )

anyways, if you look up the installation guide for trunk light, i'm sure you can hook a neon up thru the same circuit.

as a side note, guys, i still have a piece of the trunk light base stuck in my trunk. its broken off flat, and no matter what i do it just won't come off. the only thing i haven't tried is brute force, which would probably bend some metals around it.

suggestions?

Just run over to your local auto parts store...AutoZone, PepBoys, Advanced Auto, whatever is in your area and buy a universal one, the most i've seen them cost is about $7. no waiting, cheap and you have something to do for a few hours. they even have a battery powered one that just hooks onto the inside of the trunk.
Zephyr 07-06-2001 10:41 AM

Do the job right and use the stock Subaru parts from https://ssl.autocenter.net/webparts/acatalog/Online_Catalog_Impreza_Hot_Selling_Items_341.html it is the quickes and easiest mod you can do and for 35 bucks its well worth it.

b_tapper 07-06-2001 11:14 AM

yeah and about a year later you might get it from them ;) :)

Still don't know why our imprezas don't come with a rear wiper....guess they don't think it rains here

Sardonic 07-06-2001 01:33 PM

Probably the best $30 I've spent on the car. ;)

No trunk light, no hood light, no glovebox light... but gosh-darnit we get an ashtray light!! ;)
Darwin 07-06-2001 03:53 PM

Hood light..

Talking about lights.. I wouldn't mind a hood light.. is there a kit out for that?
Star*Child 07-06-2001 06:14 PM

1. When you get your new neon light, cut off the cig lighter part of it with scissors.

2. Now separate and strip the wires to expose the 2 wires.

3. Unplug the "stock trunk light harness" and see what kind of connectors you will need to hook into the "stock trunk light harness".

4. Go to pepboys or autozone and get the correct connectors. They should look like this, maybe smaller:

5. Now crimp the connectors onto the exposed wire from the neon light and plug them into the "stock harness" so you didnt have to cut anything!

Its real simple. Just get some zipties or somthing to mount the light too.

thank you STR8OUT. :)
Brady 01-15-2003 05:41 PM

why not just get the OEM striker assembly and light? it's already wired for the parts, so all you need to do is drop the striker in place of the old one, clip the light in place and voila! should cost around 40 bucks list i think - a little pricey, but not a bad deal if you want the light.

plus, this works with the factory alarm too.
Rubaru2.5 01-22-2003 11:30 PM

did this on my 2000 rs just two nights ago. I mounted two neon lights. One is on the underside of the rear deck between the two speakers the other is right underneath the trunk latch, but since I don't haul much it wont get smashed. I attached both lights using black plastic electrical conduit holders I got a lowes. They fit right around the light and can be held in place with one screw. I would only use 1/2 inch screws to keep from going through the rear deck. After I mounted my lights I tapped into a constant power wire (blue with red stripe) to run to my switch. I found it running along the underside of the speaker deck. I'm not sure about the newer models but you can get a tester from walmart for $3 that will tell you what wires are hot. I just tapped into that wire using a vampire connector and then ran a single wire to my toggle switch then I connected the two "hot" wires from my neons to the other prong on the toggle switch. I attached all the wires to the toggle using spade connectors. Find a bolt or something to attach your neutral wires to. I couldn't find one so I just attached a ring terminal to the neutrals and ran a screw into a reinforcement brace in the trunk. Just make sure you know what you are screwing into, you don't want to end up sticking out the other side of you car. I ended up mounting the toggle just to the left of my jack door, then if i ever need to fix something all my wiring is right there.
I can post pics eventually. I just need to develop the film.

nick, if you want to see what it looks like the way i did it, just look at the trunk of a WRX. It's identical.

i'll try to see if i can find the thread where i posted part numbers before.
Brady 01-23-2003 03:11 PM
