What is this on top of the Rally WRX?

The thing right above the windshield on the roof. I'm guessing it's a rear brake cooler, but not sure so I figured I'd ask you guys.

its a roof vent so that the inside of the car will stay cooler during the hot rallies.
| MattDell | 03-26-2002 12:49 AM |
Thanks, do they have those for sale anywhere?

You thinking about getting rid of AC? That's a big step, hehe. I don't use AC but I don't think i'll ever get rid of it, heh. :)

i found a closeup of one on the japanese subaru sight.

I just snagged this pic off of www.swrt.com it shows the inside view of the vent and how it directs the air toward the driver and co-driver.
| CBoldman | 03-26-2002 02:11 AM |
That would be cool to have that vent (pardon the pun):)

yes except you have to hack up the roof to make it functional and you can't use it if it's raining out....that is unless you are too cheap to pay for public water use :D

My dealer sells the glue-on fake vent. When he told me this I almost laughed.
| Subie Gal | 03-26-2002 09:47 AM |
www.get-primitive.com sell em...
you know you "do" have to cut a hole in the roof to make them functional dont you? :)
and you can use them if it's raining. most of them work just fine in the rain, depends on the vent you get...
;)

You can also get a roof scoop to channel more air into the roof vent. I was thinking about it, but cutting a whole in the roof is way too risky to me.

Come on, its just like putting in a sunroof. I think I'll do that to my WRX when I get another car and semi-retire this one :)
| cronic | 03-26-2002 09:54 PM |
ahh i want that rally car so damn bad.
| SilverWRX02 | 03-26-2002 11:38 PM |
I'll cost you 1.2 mil hehehehe ;)

Silverwrx02, are you sure about that? IIRC, the Subaru WRC car only costs about 1/2 million dollars. emphasize only!

I don't think the above picture is of the WRC. It says "Rally Team USA" on the front, the lights are different, it's only a hood vent, the body moldings are different. I think I read somewhere that here in the US, in order to make the playing field a little more even, Subaru is using a more stock-like WRX. I'm sure SubieGal can elaborate.
| MattDell | 03-27-2002 10:43 PM |
Well if it was raining I'd probably just close it .

Yeah, I follow SCCA more than WRC.

yep 500K....but believe me having seen it in person this car is beautiful, but I guess we all already knew that:D...
if you wanted to get rid of the ac and put this vent it would mean great things...a lot of weight savings, and free up some HP

Current price on a WRC is about 600,000 pounds !!! convert that, its about a mil & half . Lovell's new car for the SSCA is definetly less value than that. Its 50% Wrc bits and pieces . Ultra light shell, lots of carbon, rod ends, titanium pieces. And since the SSCA rules do not allow active diffs or sequental gearboxes to keep cost and regualate the field of competition. Thats is probably the only limitations from that car being anything closer to a full blown Wrc .

That's for last year's model
| dwrx | 03-28-2002 03:57 PM |
That vent is actually to maintain positive air pressure in the passenger compartment. It keeps the dust out.
The passenger compartment in a fully prepped SCCA or WRC car isn't sealed like your road car. There are a lot of gaps in the seams, etc. Normally dust would find it's way into the car through those openings, the roof vent keeps the air pressure inside the cara little higher than outside so the dust stays out.
-Cheers,
Duane
