Higgins' EVO had gearbox problems ;) ..... and qualified second fastest, so an excellent result for SUBARU

:D
rupertberr 06-29-2003 08:54 AM

Several people told me that Higgins flipped off a fan wearing Subaru gear that was enjoying his moment of despair a little too exuberantly! The information here was that he broke a drive shaft and finished with a time of 37:38.683.
EJ20K 06-29-2003 12:09 PM

from the Mistu web site:
After qualifying second in Open Class and setting the fastest time in Friday's upper section practice, Higgins gave Team Mitsubishi Motor Sports America a strong hope of an outstanding finish. Higgins looked extremely fast in the early sections, in fact posting the highest trap speed of any of the SCCA entries at race mid point. Unfortunately Higgins along with co-driver Daniel Barritt began experiencing transmission problems at mid course that took them well off the competitive pace. They ascended the mountain slowly, but finished the event.

15)Higgins/Barritt >37:38.683 ... plus one finger:D
16) O'Sullivan/Edstrom DNF
17) Havir/Putnam DNS

I thought that David Higgins stopped 800' from the top???? Anyway, hooray for Subaru...that makes up for STPR (the last SCCA Pro-Rally) and will help for the year end points:D
WRXMaster 06-29-2003 05:21 PM

Doesnt it only help the manufacture points?

I think that was only last yeaar. This year I think it counts for both driver and manufacture points.

I have the video of where Higgins slowed down and then was passed by Lovell and Freeman. There was also the long up-hill in front of Devil's playground where he swerved at a group of folks on the side. Of course, when you're going 10 mph that isn't too threatening. I had just turned off my camera, as I didn't expect anything more from the pokey Evo.

The rally was great. The Subarus were hauling arse. Hard to imagine a rally car was only off 5 seconds on the fastest open class.

I hear not to many cars made it to the top. Not to many cars made it to the entire rally/event, so I was a little dissapointed. But overall I had a blast and the reception at Hueberger was fantastic.

I got pics, but not hosted. Sorry!

are you guys Rally fans or only Subaru fans? Why are you so happy that Higgins had problems? He is a very good driver, and very fine gentelman, and he is the most exciting man to watch this year. So he switches from Subaru to Mitsubishi this year, and you don't like him?

I would really like to see the video of what happened. I was one corner too far up. I am guessing that some fans were being idiots. But I am having a hard time understanding why Higgins would swerve toward them and give them the finger. As a professional you have to have a thicker skin. I'll reserve judgment till I see a video.

I was there when the drivers, winners and losers, returned down the mountain for the traditional hand shakes with all the spectators. Higgins was the only one who would not participate.

Higgins is a great driver and I enjoyed watching him all week. Considering he wins all the time it was nice to see a different person in first place. Even better because the winner was in a Subaru considering their unlucky record so far this year. Higgins attitude cemented my feelings. If new information arises that would justify his actions and attitude then I will change mine. I would like to hear his story.
Subie Gal 06-30-2003 12:07 AM

guys give David a break....

unless you've been there.. dont that...
you've no idea how frustrating it is to get there -
know you've got a good car -
test all week.. work your butt of....
only to have the car die on race day :(

yes it's frustrating...
and maybe he let the "fans" get to him...
so what? i can't fault him for letting loose a bit ;)

i feel especially bad for Doug and Scott :(
DNS... that sucks guys... i'm so so so sorry...

mind you that are not in the know... the entry fee alone for this event is near $2,000.00..... money that cant be refunded if you DNS on race day or DNF..... really bummed for some of our SCCA/Rally representatives.....

 This is great, my exuberant fanlyness (is that a word?) and Higgin's having a little fun has lead to him "flipping me off, and swerving for fans!" The reality, of course, would be singular... just A fan.

How about the truth... I'm sure at this point Higgins would apriciate it.

I was standing on the straight getting pics of the hairpin. He was cruising up the mountain, one-handed like. I took a picture of him coming out of the hairpin, and then turned around and showed him my colors... I was wearing the SWRT pit crew shirt which has a large rally team logo on the back. Pointed to the ensignia, and he swerved for me! LOL, it was great, we both had big smiles on our faces, it wasn't in any way unsportman like, he was just joking around, as was I. When he drove by I asked him, "where's your EVO power now?" and he shook his head. He laughed, I laughed, what can I say? We had a moment! By the time your 20 minutes in and there's nothing you can do you've gotta be light-hearted about it to take 37 minutes to get up Pikes Peak in that caliber car. Honestly, he made my day, and seeing where this has gone has made my night!

Don't get me wrong folks, I am a huge rally fan. But what's a sport without some rivalry between teams and their fans? I absolutely love to see any car driving sideways, thowing a huge cloud of dust in the air. I just love it that much more when the dust is coming from a blue and bright yellow car ;)
Anyway, had an EXCELLENT weekend! Very good time. Great meet, nice free shirts, and memories and pictures. Not to mention there is a video of the "incident" that I'm getting my hands on! That incident is the apidomy of what is the STi vs. EVO rivalry. Good talking to everyone out there. Now quite calling me an idiot! :p

Now for some pics!

I even took a pic of an EVO

but you gotta show the Subys the love :D

I've got a bunch more I may or may not post, if anyone has any request let me know...

Hey thanks for straightening it out. Obviously it looked different to those at a distance and got exagerated when it was told to me. I am glad it was all in fun. :alien:

Geez, look what you started Ryan! As long as it was in good fun.

Well, I drive a Subaru, but I tend to follow drivers more than cars.

What happened to Lauchlin? Why'd he DNF?
WRXedUSA 07-01-2003 11:12 PM

Anyone know when its on televizzle this year? I cant seem to find any listings on speedtv.com or espn.com. I remember watching it a week later on ESPN2.

So we sold 8k tickets this year to the event as opposed to 4k in 2002. Whats the word on possibly shutting the event down? With any fewer cars, and the high entry fee as Jamie says, it could be a catch 22.

Ideas??
omahasubaru 07-03-2003 11:16 AM

Are you nuts? If only 5 cars ran it would still happen. They won't Shut down the PPIHC it has way too much heritage.

they were actually talking about shutting it down last year.

seems there's not only organizational issues...
but some of the locals have tired of it

i hope to be back up there next year,
funds pending.. :(
Are you nuts? If only 5 cars ran it would still happen. They won't Shut down the PPIHC it has way too much heritage.
Just as much heritage as Mt. Washington did.. and we see where that is right now. There are still 60+ people that actively hillclimb in the New England area (www.neha.org) that consistently inquire about renting the hill to no avail.
seems there's not only organizational issues...but some of the locals have tired of it
I agree... organizational issues are always going to be present, especially at an event of this magnitude. My concerns are the number of competitors that are going to continue to show up if the entry fees continue to climb. Other events, more lengthy in duration, are beginning to establish themselves IMHO. OTC, Targa Newfoundland, OLOA, etc that all have similiar entry fee numbers. Hard to justify blowing a racing budget on one event when I can do 7 or 8 hillclimbs at half the price here. Not to say that I'm not insanely intrigued and are eyeballing one in 2004. :)

Thanks Jamie for confirming any rumors.

I talked with Doug Shepherd and his mechanic from D-C for the Mopar entry at the hotel. He says that the WRC wont be coming to the US anytime soon because the the cars are slower than the SCCA pro rally cars, and they are unregisterable in the USA because of bumper hieght and muffler and catalytic converter issues.

I'm thinking, without the WRC at a world rally in the CS area, the PPIHC could fade away if they dont do something quick. Hope people arent bettin on this to happen.

I was impressed by the Japanese contingent with thier EVO's and 350Z's
He says that the WRC wont be coming to the US anytime soon because the the cars are slower than the SCCA pro rally cars
i'll take that bet. smaller restrictors and about the same weight maybe, but that's not all it takes to make a car fast, especially in rally.
COwannago 07-03-2003 04:41 PM

I don't think Pikes Peak will fade away. Pro Rally seems to get more and more support every year, and with it now an event at Pikes Peak, more tickets will be sold, seems simple enough to me. Hopefully one day it will be as popular as it used to when the older Unsers would run up the mountain.

Nick C.
COwannago 07-03-2003 04:45 PM

Oh yeah, and I think that if people went to this event even compared to other Pro Rally events, they will see that it is truly awesome. As opposed to seeing one or two turns on a regular coarse, fans can see over ten if they sit at Devils Playground. The elevation is in the fans favor as they can see much of the course.

a 12 mile stage is NOTHING like "real" pro rally...
and it's not part of the full pro rally series...
not a good example of rally or what it's about really.

PPIHC only counts for points for Open and Group N and the manufacturers

the rest of the classes have no reason to even bother going...

kind of sad really. i would have liked to have gone again this year but couldnt justify spending needless/pointless (<---literally) money....

also, WRC is coming people...
it's going to be in Mexico next year... and pro rally is making steps towards conforming to the FIA rules and classes.. that can only mean one thing..... :)

when is Pikes Peak going to be showed on TV. ppihc.com doesn't have any info for this year. They still show info for the 02 telecast.
COwannago 07-04-2003 08:03 PM

I'm aware of what WRC rally is about having gone to Rally Deutschland. If you don't think that Pike's Peak's "faux" rally is entertaining, then I wonder if you have spectated.
