Sparco seat: ST-X -> SM??? part 1

Sparco seat: ST-X -> SM???
I cant figure out the SCCA rulling on seats... If I got say a sparco sprint seat with brakets for my car, would it be legal for ST-X or ST-S even? Confusing stuff...
TimStevens 01-09-2003 08:01 AM

I believe the rule is that if the seat reclines but is not the factory seat, you can stay in an ST class. If the seat does not recline and is not factory, you get bumped to SM.

But, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that :)

-tim
Correction: In STX "Alternate driver and front passenger seats are allowed, but they cannot be constructed of a solid outer shell and must have a suspended bottom cushion and be fully upholstered. "

I don't know what a Sparco Sprint Seat looks like, but for STX, that's the rule. :)

Ok... so if it reclines and is upholstered it's legal. I was close... not bad for someone who autocrosses a car that's not legal for any ST class :)

In STX, it CAN be of 1 piece construction, but can also recline if you so wish.

A 1 piece will generally be lighter than a recliner.

Doesn't "solid outer shell" imply one-piece, i.e. non-reclineable?

TimStevens 01-09-2003 09:18 AM

You just said that seats can be one-piece in STX, but the paragraph you quoted for STX says "they cannot be constructed of a solid outer shell." Wouldn't that mean no non-reclining seats in STX?

If that's true Im gonna have to run in some silly class when I auto-x. It wouldnt be worth removing my Sparco Evo 2 every time.

Solid outer shell means that the fiberclass (or pimpy carbon/kevlar) is unapholstered visible on the back. (like your EVO2 Y2k4door)
To be legal the whole seat needs to be covered in fabric.
There are a couple OMP seats that would fit this rule, and I thought there was a sparco.

this is how I have interpreted it anyway.
"suspended seat cusion" isnt very descriptive IMO. does that mean it just needs padded seat cusion? or does it mean suspended by springs? If so then the above is not legal.

KC, are you saying that we can use a one peice non-reclining racing seat in STX?

I thought this rule was the same as STS

Correct. Fully upholstered one piece seats are STX legal. elgorey is correct in stating the the WHOLE seat must be covered in fabric.

The Sparco Sprint and Ultra are both STX legal by the definition.
The RS is the only one I could find by OMP.
TimStevens 01-09-2003 11:22 AM

Thanks for the clarification. Sorry for spreading any misinformation ;)

No problem! I think there's alot of confusion between the STS/STX classes. This is one of the major rules that people usually mix up. Honestly, I think they should try to keep the STS/STX rules similar in this regard. There's no reason why STS shouldn't be able to run a one-piece seat as well. Diffs, cats, and other power mods are one thing, but different rules for seats is pointless IMO.
Thug 01-09-2003 12:40 PM

Doh. This one of those really silly SCCA rules that makes no sense to me. If my seat had fabric on the back Id be able to run in STX, but because it doesnt I have to run in what, SM?

*shakes head* @ SCCA

Thanx for the clarification though guys.
TimStevens 01-09-2003 12:45 PM

Get yourself some felt fabric and some watered down white glue, and you'll be in like Flynn ;)

-tim

p.s. Just for clarification's sake, I have no idea whether that'd be legal ;)
Dussander 01-09-2003 01:55 PM

Since we are on the topic...
Does Sparco have a bolt in bracket w/ or w/out slide for the 02 WRX?
OMP claims to have one for the car.

I don't want to have to break out the dremel or drill to put my seat in. ;)

Even better, go to like a fabric store or something. Get a piece of fabric and put Velcro on it and the seat. Velcro it in for racing. Its upholstered. Although I am sure someone would complain about that.

I think that means you can't bolt the seat straight to the floor, you need to use the "tracks" that you can buy. I think Sparco sells them.

that cool  on the other hand I was hoping to save money this year....
Kostamojen 01-10-2003 03:03 AM

Thats what I thought... I noticed the funny rule and exeption in ST-X and its why I asked :p

I think I will get the sprint then! Woo! :D

BTW, anyone know if there are additional pads or stuff availible for sprints? or any sort of accessories? (I know jack about seats, exept that I sat in a sprint in a store and liked it, and found it for a great price w/ brackets)
KC 01-10-2003 07:58 AM

I was looking at some of the sesats yesterday. and I got to thinking...

What's the weight of a WRX Seat? An RS Seat? A 2.2 or a 1.8?

When I unbolted my WRX Driver seat to put in my harness in, it feels REALLY light. Would most of the <$400 seats be that much of a weight savings? (That's the only reason I can think of changing a seat for auto-x....the weight savings)

Here is a good example of the seat.
This is legal for STX. This was a they call a fitted back suspension style. This is just like your stock seat but non reclining. These are normally made with a tubular frame.

This is what you call a "solid outer shell" or pan style seat. TH pan is either made from fiberglass, carbonfiber or metal. This is not legal for STX and will either bump you into SP or SM.

Hum,
Corbeau Forza seat weights 16lbs and retails at $220. Brackets retails for $85.75 each. Here are the bracket codes for the lazy:
driver E2038T
passanger E2039T

I'm guessing these will be popular.

The Sparco Ultra may be popular as well at 12.8lbs and retails for about $339.

KC, take out your seat again and weight it for us. :)
