4 brake lights

I bought an 05 wrx a while ago and its been bugging me that i have a brake light in the back window AND the wing. This is how i got it from the dealer!
Sti's and some other wrxs dont have it with the wing. I removed the light inside the car and have a big hole in the carpet. The parts guy at the local dealer said it was only avaliable this way. hes a moron :furious:
anyway i called the dealer i got it from to make sure it wasnt added from them...he said thats not what they normally do and hell check to see if its a swap they got....Anyway, should i get the rear seat upper deck cover for free from them or do you think im beat and have to fork over 150 bones???
I do know this though when I install spoilers on cars @the toyota dealer i work at,we cover the third brake light. Could this be a legal thing? nobody has an answer.

It is normal, as far as I can tell, to have the third light in additon to the one in the spoiler. I have one in my 02, and so do most other people that I have observed. It's not anything the law is concerned with; it's not illegal to have 4 brake lights, if that is what you are concerend about. But, it could be illegal, or at least warrant a conversation with a law officer, if you got rid of your spoiler and didn't replace the third light on the parcel shelf. I would say keep the light on the parcel shelf as well as holding onto your cash.

eh, I think it looks dumb with all those lights..Plus i did the tail light bulb mod and it looks way better without the 3rd.(cause i already took it out)

Since the WRX does not come standered with a spoiler and most spoilers are added at the port/dealer they automatically get a third brake light from the factory. I do not know of any dealer that removes the third brake light when they install a spoiler. Live with 4 brake lights or pony up the money cause it's just the way things are.

Then buy the cover.
You might try asking subiegal, aka Jaime @ www.subarugenuineparts.com, if she can get it for you cheaper than $150.

I'm rocking 2 brake lights.
| specialev | 01-25-2006 09:48 PM |
I'm rocking three with no decklid spoiler lamps and it suits me just fine.
Goodluck, man!

If the car came as a premium package it would not have the third brake light inside.
There are covers available to fill the hole and I think they are much cheaper than $150.

you can't just unplug the wiring to the third/deck lamp. that's what we did on hondas.

In most states if the light is there it has to work to pass inspection. Plus do you really want to get pulled over by the cop two cars behind you for defective equipment? While he's got you pulled over he may start to look at other things. My state is pretty lienent with mods however I know that some are not. A modded exhast and intake can get you some fines in some places. I'd rather not take the chance but what do I know. I'm an old man.

i just think of it as a rear-view brake indicator for me, the driver. lights up my white wing bright red and lets me know when i'm braking, great for those times when my foot slips!
nah i'm just kidding, i took that **** out long ago. i just put some black textured foam material over the hole, does the job.

i added a wrx spoiler myself and took the wire from the interior 3rd brake light and used it to wire up the spoiler's brake light... then i took the interior one and sprayed a light coat of flat black on it so it's not too noticable... and once i get tinted you'll barely be able to tell it's there... but i wasnt about to have 4 brake lights, never looks right IMO

but would it be considered defective if the spoiler light lit up? you just need the center mount brake light right?

In Vermont, which is where I live and work (I hold an inspection licence) if the light is on the car then it MUST work.

I had all four, but I bought a spoiler extension so the light on the decklid became very noticable. so... I jut removed the bulb, why remove the housing all together and leave a hole in your decklid? very simple, and now it is no problem. although my limo black tints help keep the old, unused brake light housing on the DL.

open your trunk and look at the bottom of the rear deck. theres a plug there for the 3rd brake light. unplug it and your set with only the spoiler light
| amukaoen | 01-26-2006 02:04 PM |
who cares? you should be happy that you have one more brake light then everyone else... thats added protection that someone wont hit you if they missed the other 3 brake lights going off..

You know I have the same setup and didn't like it either until recently.
I just added ZeroSports CF wing risers and now I'm glad I didn't take out the brake light in the rear deck!!
I also did the brake light mod to my stock tail lights.
So basically I have this setup (from the ground and up)
1) Stock tail lights w/ brake light mod
2) Rear deck brake light
3) Spoiler brake light above rear deck light
I think it looks badass at night and people definitely pay attention when I get on the brakes now, even if they are in a SUV riding up high.
But I guess it all depends on what you like!

I swapped my wingless trunk for an '06 STI trunk last weekend. My wingless obviously did not have any type of spoiler light, I only had the 3rd brake light in the window. The STI had the spoiler light, but no light in the rear deck. We swapped trunks, but we also swapped rear decks so he could have a 3rd brake light. See if you can find an STI owner that went wingless (or with a WRX spoiler maybe) that would be up for swapping his blank rear deck for yours with the 3rd brake light. My car is an 02 and it was a direct swap with the 06 so there wouldn't be any issues. It looks real clean.

i like having the brake lights....better safe then sorry....i prefer it much more than those stupid american cars like cadillacs that you can harldly tell if it light up or not
